Nextbit Robin Review

February 18, 2016

You may remember that back in September, the Paranoid Android team added the Nextbit Robin to its list of devices that supported its custom ROM, thanks in part to Nextbit sending the team Robin devices to work with. It appears that the two parties have continued to collaborate. In a blog post, Nextbit stated it exchanged "ideas, code, and resources" with the Paranoid Android team so the NextbitOS can work with Nougat. Also, the Paranoid Android's version of Nougat got help from Nextbit so it can work well on the Robin.

The final result is now available to download for Robin beta testers, and if you own that smartphone, you can sign up now to receive the Nougat beta at the link below. Nextbit does warn that if owners have modded their Robin phone, it is not recommended that they get this update.

Hit the three-pointer with NBA 2KVR Experience for Gear VR, PSVR and HTC Vive

This post originally appeared on our sister site, VRSource.

If you want to feel like you are a pro basketball player in the NBA, a new virtual reality game might be able to help make that fantasy come true, at least for a little while. 2K Sports, the creators of the best-selling NBA 2K games for consoles, has released NBA 2KVR Experience for the Samsung Gear VR, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive headsets.

The game was co-developed by Visual Concepts, the makers of the NBA 2K console games, and Specular Interactive.  The player begins the game by walking into the court of Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the home of the Indiana Pacers. One of its team members, Paul George, who also happens to be the cover player for NBA 2K17, will be the game's mentor and commentator, offering tips on how to improve the player's efforts in the game.

NBA 2KVR Experience will offer a first-person viewpoint for the player as he or she tries to complete a series of mini-games on the court, including the classic three-point shootout, along with speed and accuracy challenges. There's even a "buzzer beater" countdown mini-game so you can feel like a hero as you get that last point before time runs out.  The game features a tie-in with Gatorade, as the player gains "fuel boosts" from the sports drink that is suppose to help with their shots, speed and recovery.

The game is currently available for download on the previously mentioned platforms for $14.99. If you own an Oculus Rift, don't worry; the NBA 2KVR Experience game will be released for that headset sometime in the near future.

New Canadian Pixel update brings “double-tap to check phone” and “lift to check phone” gestures

google pixel xl initial review aa (33 of 48)

If you happen to live in Canada and own a Google Pixel, it's your lucky day. A 261MB update is rolling out now, carrying build number NPF26J, bringing two new 'Moves' to Google's new flagship phone.

In case you're unfamiliar, 'Moves' is a section in the settings menu on Google's Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X devices running Android 7.1 or later. Moves are basically quick little gestures that control your phone. For instance, in the Moves menu you'll find the option to swipe the fingerprint sensor to activate your notification shade, double-tap the power button to activate the camera, and a few other useful tricks.

The new Moves coming to the Google Pixel are "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone."

Once your update is installed, head to the Moves section of the settings menu and enable both of them. After they're enabled, you'll be able to double tap your screen to check for notifications, as well as lift your phone up to check for notifications.

If you'd like to grab the update early, the folks at XDA Developers have the OTA .zip file for the new update. Note that this is for Canadian variants of the Google Pixel only, not the Pixel XL or any international or Verizon variants of either handset.

Custom ROM developers and various OEMs have been implementing these "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone" features for years, so it's great to see them finally make their way to Google's devices.

You and I could both be using a used smartphone in 2020

According to the International Data Corporation, we will see significant growth in the market for used and refurbished smartphones in 2020. Indeed, you and I could both be using a used smartphone in four years or so.

Refurbished phones: what you need to know

September 8, 2016

In the US, most carriers, manufacturers, and retailers already offer trade-in deals. This sort of strategy is slowly becoming more mainstream in Europe and Asia as well. The advantage is that these used phones are officially sold as refurbished devices for significantly less. Companies like Apple already have a separate section for refurbished sales, and rumor has it Samsung is to follow suit in the near future. Not only that, second hand smartphone markets are growing considerably in the US. Just have a look at websites like Swappa or eBay, and you have a myriad of used Android and iOS devices for a fraction of the original cost.

Well, according to the IDC, that trend will continue to grow into 2020: in 2015, 81.3 million used devices were shipped, and that figure is expected to grow to 222.6 million devices in 2020. That is 22.3 percent in compound annual growth rate. Of the 222.6 million used devices, 55.2 million are expected to be in North America. Compare that to 15.2 million shipments in 2015, we see that the increase in growth will be more substantial here.

In 2015, 81.3 million used devices were shipped, and that figure is expected to grow to 222.6 million devices in 2020.

As Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phone program explains:

The demand for refurbished smartphones is already becoming constrained in countries such as the United States. Mobile operators are the most constrained given the need for replacement devices for customers who have purchased device insurance plans. In addition, used handsets provide an additional option for customers with subprime credit making them ineligible for equipment installment plans. With the average selling price for a used device expected to be $136 in 2020, the total market value for used devices in 2020 will be an estimated $30 billion.
