OnePlus announced the OnePlus 3T yesterday and with it arrived some colorful new wallpapers. Hampus Olsson, the artist who created them, has subsequently uploaded them to his blog for everybody to enjoy.

Olsson has collaborated with OnePlus on wallpapers for all its devices from the OnePlus 2 onward, following an accidental meeting with OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei in Goa.

His latest creations were developed while he was on vacation in Europe. After working on paintings in Paris, Olsson said he flew to Berlin where he spent most of his free time Cafés "cutting, pasting, morphing, wrapping the pieces together to the final digital wallpapers" which eventually shipped with the device.

Huawei and NTT DOCOMO, a Japanese telecommunications provider, have successfully completed the world's first large-scale 5G field trial in the 4.5 GHz frequency band.

During the trial, conducted in Yokohama, Japan, a total user throughput of 11.29 Gbps and less than 0.5-millisecond one-way user plane latency were achieved in the "macro cell coverage of a real urban application scenario".

The test was made up of "a base station that works in the 4.5 GHz band with 200 MHz bandwidth, 64 TRXs and 23 UEs of both static and mobile types," explained Huawei. The 0.5-millisecond latency achieved is about one tenth of that seen on LTE.

Huawei said that this was a "leading-edge breakthrough of foundational importance" in shaping the future of the 5G network, while Mr Takehiro Nakamura, Vice President and Managing Director of NTT DOCOMO's 5G Laboratory said the trial's success had "brought the whole industry one step closer to 5G commercialization by 2020."

Yesterday, US carrier AT&T urged regulators to finalize the initial 5G standards by December 2017 instead of the planned June 2018 launch, stating it wanted to "make sure the results of our trials get into the standards." AT&T expects to release early market deployments of 5G services by 2019.

Samsung’s new acquisition will help it deliver an “advanced messaging experience”

Samsung has revealed its acquisition of NewNet Communication Technologies in a press release yesterday. The Canadian company, which specialises in Rich Communication Services (RCS) products, could help Samsung deliver a new messaging service similar to Apple's iMessage.

Samsung has previously explored its own messaging apps, most notably with ChatON, which launched in 2011. Despite having a reported 100 million users at some interval, ChatON was overtaken by rival messaging apps and shut down in February 2015; Samsung said that it wanted instead to focus on its "core services".

Regarding its new acquisition, Samsung stated that consumers could "benefit from an advanced messaging experience with features such as enhanced calling, group chat, and the ability to easily share and transfer large files including multimedia and high-resolution photos." but didn't reveal how it might integrate NewNet's technologies.

Samsung also sees an industry-wide benefit from the acquisition, stating that the move will "accelerate the deployment of RCS-enabled networks," which are still in their infancy.

Google recently rolled out RCS features to its Messenger app, but the usage of them is restricted to Google Pixel or Nexus 6P owners on the Sprint network. Samsung said its own product would be able to "communicate on any network, with an RCS-enabled device as well as SMS-only devices."

Quick, Draw pitches your awful drawing skills against Google’s AI

quick-draw-google

quick-draw-google

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is becoming the next big thing in technology. Google has been making great progress in this field and has recently shown off its highly accurate AI image captioning system.

But the company has more to give. Meet Google's latest AI experiment called "Quick, Draw." At first glance, it looks like a simple drawing game designed for kids. But in reality, it's quite an advanced tool, as it uses neural networks to try and figure the object you're drawing.

Here's how it works. Quick, Draw first displays a written word ("boat", "tree"…) and gives you 20 seconds to draw it using your mouse cursor. The tool will then — with the help of AI — try to figure out what that object is based on your artistic skills. It uses the same technology as Google Translate for handwriting recognition, and of course, learns from its mistakes the more you play with it.

Great, now Google's AI is coming up with its own encryption methods

I've found the tool to be quite interesting, and although it sounds and looks simple and silly in a way, it's actually a ton of fun and a bit addictive. After trying it out for the first time, I was prompted to draw a toothbrush, a sink, and a soccer ball. Unfortunately, Google didn't give me any credit for my work, as it recognized my drawings as a fork, a potato, and a cookie. So, either Google's new AI tool doesn't work correctly, or my artistic skills aren't as good as I've thought. I'm leaning more towards the second option.

So, if you want to test out your drawing skills, try the tool out for yourself by clicking the button below. And as always, share your first impressions with us in the comment section.
