AT&T will throttle video data with Stream Saver starting in early 2017

Customers of AT&T will see high-definition video streaming throttled down to 480p in early 2017 with a new feature called Stream Saver. The wireless carrier says that the idea is to save customers from using more of their monthly data than they need to, and that the throttling can be turned on or off at any time.

AT&T adds that there will be no charge for customers to disable or enable Stream Saver once it goes live. The fine print of the announcement does state that some high-def video streaming content providers will not be throttled by Stream Saver, because it won't be able to detect all those sources. The announcement did not offer specifics on which services will be and won't be supported by AT&T's upcoming service.

The carrier says that once Stream Saver does go live, it will inform customers with a special message stating that it has been enabled, along with instructions on how it can be turned on and off. It will be available on most of the carrier's plans with data, including its pre-paid GoPhone plans.

What do you think of this announcement from AT&T? Is this just a way for the carrier to save users from going over on their data plan, or is Stream Saver an unnecessary move to throttle video streams to customers?

If you are looking for a discount on some high-quality in-ear headphones for your smartphone, Best Buy has a deal you might want to look into. The Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones, which normally sell for $99.99 at the retailer, are on sale for a mere $39.99, a big $60 discount.

June 6, 2016

These headphones are supposed to be sweat and weather resistant, which means if you are running or working out at your local gym, they should be able to keep working with you. The headphones also come with a carrying case and Bose's StayHere ear tips, which are designed to conform to the shape of your ear.

There are a couple of caveats with this sale. One is that only the charcoal color version of the headphones is available at the lower $39.99 price tag; the white "frost" color version is not discounted. The other problem is that this version does not feature an inline remote with a microphone, in case you want to make some calls. However, if you just want to get a set of quality wired headphones for listening to your favorite music or podcast while working out or just relaxing, the Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones sale is one to check out.

Facebook may have briefly declared you dead today

best new android apps

best new android apps

If you went to a friend's Facebook profile, or even your own, sometime earlier today, you may have been surprised that the social network had declared your friend, or yourself, as being dead. Memorial banners were briefly online on many users pages today, but this appears to just be a server glitch.

All of the banners had the same kind of message, saying, "We hope people who love (name) will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate (his/her) life." As Business Insider shows, even Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg's official profile page was not immune to this rather spooky server bug.

The glitch started appearing just after 3 p.m Eastern time today, but by 4 p.m. it had apparently been resolved. So if you saw a friend's page turn into a memorial for his or her life, the chances are he or she is still very much alive. Facebook has not yet revealed what caused this server bug, but we would certainly hope they will take measures to not have this happen en masse again.

Did you encounter this "Remembering" bug on your Facebook profile? If so, what was your first immediate reaction? Let us know in the comments!

Astral Frontier allows the player to encounter other characters in his quest to save humanity, and their skills and abilities can be used to defeat enemies.

Kemco has release a free version of Astral Frontier, that it claims allows players to play the full version without spending any real money. There are optional in-game purchases to speed up play. In addition, there is a "premium" version of the same game that offers the same content and in-game purchases, but gives you a running start with some in-game currency to begin with. It is usually priced at $4.99 but for the launch the price has been reduced to just $2.99.

Sony Xperia X Performance Feature Focus screenshots-4

Shortly after its launch, Sony's Xperia X Performance started having some 'performance' issues rather ironically. Multiple users complained that its accelerometer would suddenly stop working, and Sony promised there would be a fix on its way soon. Well, that day has come: the new update rolling out to Xperia X Performance users should address the accelerometer woes.

Sony Xperia X Performance review – is it worth $700?

July 7, 2016

Today, Sony  issued an update in the form of build number 35.0.A.1.297, which is being pushed out to F8131 and F8132 – both the single SIM and dual SIM variants of the device. In the meantime, the only solution when the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ambient light, proximity sensor, barometer or screen rotation stops responding seems to be the good ol' power button.

Have you received the software update yet? If so, has it fixed your phone's accelerometer? Let us know by leaving a comment below!

Google Photos now allows you to create animations offline

If you are lacking an Internet connection on your smartphone or tablet, but still want to create animations from your still images in Google Photos, you are in luck. The latest update for the Android app enables offline animation creation for the first time.

If your phone doesn't have a Internet connection, or if you have turned it off for some reason, the new version of Google Photos will still let you use the "Create new animation" button in the Assistant tab to select between 2 and 50 photos for your GIF-like creation. The animation will then be stored locally, and will be uploaded later to Google's cloud storage service once the Internet connection goes live again.

This is just the latest in a series of recent updates to the Google Photos app. The company has added features like permanent album contents sorting, along with improvements for sharing multiple photos. A few weeks ago, Google Photos added a "throwback" feature that automatically shows older photos of subjects that appear in more recent images.

Will this new offline support for animations in Google Photos be helpful for you? Let us know in the comments!
