Escape the grind: make money building websites

The AA Picks team is on the prowl for things we think our readers will value. If we make an affiliate partnership to reduce the costs of purchases, then we may see a share of revenue.

traffic

traffic

It's a trap.

Every day you fight the traffic to work, grind out a gray, anonymous day, and then struggle back through the traffic to while away your evening. Go to bed early, and the next day comes all the sooner. Stay up later, and tomorrow will only feel more like a drudge.

There has to be a way out. And the answer might be right in front of your face.

While you're waiting out the clock at work or passing the time at home, you look at dozens if not hundreds of websites, all of which are turning a buck to earn their stay on the web. So how can you get in on the action?

That's where Rob Percival comes in.

Rob is a 35-year-old self-described code geek who really just loves teaching people how to code. Every year he runs a Code School for kids in the city of Cambridge, and he's also the brains behind the environmentally conscious hosting service Eco Web.

Over the last two years, Rob has established himself as the leading creator of online coding courses. He has taught over 400,000 students how to turn their coding ideas into reality.

Right now, Rob is offering a complete web developer course that can help you pull yourself out of your rut and break into the world of website forging.

As an instructor who believes in learning by doing, Rob will walk you through building 25 websites and mobile apps over the duration of this class. He also provides fun challenges along the way to test your knowledge and challenge your creativity.

The final challenge? A full Twitter clone.

Seem like an impossible task? Well, thousands of Rob's students who started with zero coding experience have pulled it off.

The course covers HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, Python, MySQL, and more. There are currently nearly 41,000 students enrolled, and the course sports a 4.7-star rating from over 8,500 reviewers.

You'll learn how to:

  • Build websites and webapps
  • Build HTML-based mobile apps
  • Get a job as a junior web developer
  • Bid for projects on freelance websites
  • Start your own online business
  • Be a comfortable front-end developer
  • Be proficient with databases and server-side languages

That's 291 lectures that you can move through at your own pace, over 30 hours of step-by-step video tutorials, and active support from Rob himself in the course forums.

The deal gets even sweeter though.

Rob is offering all of his students a free year of hosting on Eco Web so that you can host your first website without putting down a dime. A year's hosting on Eco Web normally costs $199. You'll also receive a collection of free eBooks for further reference, in case you're interested in developing your skills further.

If you're waiting for the catch, that's understandable.

Of course, packages like this one are far from free. Rob normally charges $200 for this course, but Udemy is currently holding a site-wide sale (no promo code needed) that lets you scoop up this class for a cool $19.

Hell, at that price, the year's worth of web hosting more than makes up for what you're paying – unlimited access to coursework and potential for a new career aside!

You don't have to stay stuck in the daily grind. Hundreds of thousands of people are making their living in the realm of web development… and they don't even have to put on pants if they don't want to.

Equip yourself with the tools you need to climb out of the mundane. Don't waste away in a cubicle; take control of your own fate, and see if the life of the web developer is right for you!

HTC has discounted a range of its products in the lead up to Black Friday. The 'Early Access to Black Friday' sale, which ends on November 14, includes discounts on a number of major HTC smartphones like the HTC 10 and HTC One M9.

To qualify for the deals you must first sign up for a free Team HTC membership – HTC's perk-based incentive scheme –but it might be worth it to cash-in on the offers. The list of discounted items includes:

  • HTC 10 – $500 (down from ~$550)
  • HTC One M9 – $300 (down from ~$350)
  • HTC One A9 – $275 (down from ~$320)
  • UA Band – $79 (down from $120)

HTC's action camera, the RE Camera, has also had its price slashed to $75 (it cost $200 at launch), but it's currently listed on Amazon for $60 with free shipping – if you're interested, I'd advise looking there first.

You'll find all the deals on the HTC store page, including 40% off select accessories, but make sure you sign up Team HTC membership before making a purchase to receive the discounts.

Report: a different Samsung phone, the Galaxy J5, has caught fire

SAMSUNG GALAXY j5 2016 colors

SAMSUNG GALAXY j5 2016 colors

A Samsung Galaxy J5 smartphone "exploded" in France on Sunday, according to a report from Associated Press. Lamya Bouyirdane, the smartphone's owner, said she noticed that the phone was hot while at a family gathering. Bouyirdane threw the device away when it began to smoke, before it then caught fire and its back "blew off". The fire was later extinguished by her partner.

It's not clear whether this was the 2015 or 2016 variant of Samsung's Galaxy J5, though a comment from William Stofega, an analyst at research company IDC, suggests the device had been on sale for only "several months", indicating it was the more recent edition. He also noted that this was the first report he'd encountered of the J5 catching fire.

In a statement, Samsung said it wasn't able to comment on the incident because it was yet to properly investigate it.

Samsung runs full-page apology in US newspapers over Galaxy Note 7 cancellation

Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was discontinued in October following a number of reports of it catching fire and Apple also investigated reports of its iPhone 7 overheating recently.

Lithium-ion batteries, the likes of which are found in mobile products like smartphones, tablets and laptops, heat up when they are in use and even minor defects can result in unforeseen temperature increases in certain circumstances. It's not yet known if J5 and Note 7 suffer from the same issue, but given that the J5 has been on the market since April, it's possible that the problem would have been detected sooner if it was a common flaw.

A Xiaomi Mi Note 2 variant with a flat screen could be on its way

xiaomi-mi-note-2-hands-on-first-look-aa-6

A flat display variant of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has appeared on Chinese telecommunications site TENAA, indicating that it could soon be released. Xiaomi's Mi Note 2 was unveiled at the end of October with its curved display being one of its most notable features. The new device – which has model number 2015213 – also makes use of a flat glass rear but otherwise houses the same specs as the Mi Note 2.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 had its first flash sale on November 1 and reportedly sold out 50 seconds after it was made available to customers who pre-registered for a chance to purchase the handset. Today, Xiaomi said that it took one minute to sell out in its second flash sale.

Xiaomi's decision to produce a flat screen variant may allow it to sell this phablet at a lower price point compared to the curved version but to find out for sure we'll have to wait for the Chinese manufacturer to make an official announcement.

The Mi Note 2 will next be on sale on November 11. Check out our initial impressions of the handset in our hands-on Xiaomi Mi Note 2 review.

BlackBerry DTEK50 and DTEK60 head to India

Blackberry DTEK50 -24

Blackberry DTEK50 -24

BlackBerry's latest smartphones are finally heading to India this week, although the mid-range DTEK50 and high-end DTEK60 are priced a fair bit higher than when they were launched in the US earlier this year. The DTEK50 will be available to purchase in India this coming weekend with a Rs. 21,990 ($330) price tag. Consumers will have to wait a little longer for the DTEK60, which will go on sale in early December for Rs. 46,990 ($700).

The DTEK50 was originally unveiled back in July and comes equipped with a 5.2-inch FullHD display, 1.2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 617 SoC, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage accompanied by a microSD card slot. The phone also features a 13 megapixel rear camera, 8 megapixel front facing camera, and a 2,610mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0.

BlackBerry DTEK50 review

August 11, 2016

BlackBerry's DTEK60 is the company's flagship this year. It boasts a larger 5.5-inch QHD display, a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. There's a 21 megapixel rear camera, the same 8 megapixel front facing camera, and a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

BlackBerry's high price point in India is unlikely to make either of the handsets particularly competitive with other phones based on hardware alone. However, the company's top notch security features and software may just win a few consumers over. BlackBerry is bigging up its Enterprise Mobility Management solutions to try and win over the business crowd too.

Will you be buying one?
