Android Auto is rolling out for all Android phones to expand its reach to more cars

Android Auto is about to be used by a lot more car owners. Google is rolling out an update to the official Android Auto app that will allow its vehicle-based UI to run on any Android phone with Lollipop installed or higher. The company first announced its plans to offer this update back in May during its Google I/O developer conference.

In a blog post, Google stated this update was made for anyone who either mounts their smartphone on their car's dashboard, or connects the phone to a dashboard display. It will allow those car owners to access the driver-friendly interface of Android Auto. The three main features of the app are hands-free phone calls and messages with voice commands, access to turn-by-turn directions with Google Maps, and the ability to stream music with apps like Spotify, Pandora, and of course Google Play Music. While it's not part of this new update, Google says they plan to offer improvements to the Android Auto app in the coming weeks that will allow users to access features like maps, music and messaging by saying, "Ok Google."

The app itself will be able to start automatically when it is paired with a Bluetooth device. For people who mount their smartphone on their dashboard, Google recommends that they use a Bluetooth-enabled car mount such as Logitech's SmartCar. The new app will be available in the 30 countries where Android Auto is currently supported.

If you own a car and a smartphone, would you consider using the new Android Auto app while you are driving?

New Galaxy S8 leaks detail advanced AI, delayed launch, new display tech and more

Despite Samsung's efforts to keep its employees from breathing a word on the new Galaxy S8, a flood of new information has emerged about the company's next flagship. From an upgraded OLED display material, a dedicated AI button, three-coil wireless charging, delayed launch and near bezel-less design, the Galaxy S8 sounds like it is shaping up to be a game-changer. Here's the latest flood of leaks, condensed.

Dedicated AI button

The Wall Street Journal cites two unnamed sources that confirm Samsung is testing a new dedicated hardware button for the S8's advanced AI assistant. The "AI button" is reportedly still in prototype phase and as such might not make it to the final design. But the idea of putting advanced AI capabilities front-and-center on the next Galaxy device would catapult the S8 into the same league as Google's Pixel phones with the (apparently) exclusive Google Assistant.

Advanced AI capabilities would catapult the Galaxy S8 into the same AI league as Google's Pixel phones.

Delayed launch

One of the WSJ's sources also noted that the Samsung Galaxy S8 launch would possibly be delayed until as late as April. This would mean the Galaxy S8 would be a no-show for MWC 2017, foregoing its usual unveiling time slot. While this news might be a little disappointing for some, I think we can all agree that if Samsung needs to take a little more time to deliver a rock solid device with no flaws, then it probably should.

"Significantly differentiated" AI

Last week, Samsung Mobile's Injong Rhee said that AI on the Galaxy S8 would feature "significantly differentiated" capabilities from its competitors. Those competitors currently include the likes of Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana and Siri.

The Galaxy S8's AI assistant will be able to learn and adapt to your usage habits over time.

But where most of these are "just" virtual assistants, the Galaxy S8's AI assistant will be able to learn and adapt to your usage habits, becoming more advanced over time. As the Viv Labs website notes: "Viv is taught by the world, knows more than it is taught, and learns every day."

It's important to note that Viv is not just a PA like Siri or Cortana either, but is also an AI platform. Samsung is reportedly going to use Viv not only as a smartphone PA but also as as a means to connect various IoT devices. This would put Viv at the center of a connected home in the same way as Google Home or Amazon Alexa.

Rhee went on to say that Samsung is "developing a key major interface which will bring about a totally new paradigm, an open AI platform". This new paradigm will reportedly allow you to perform various actions – like ordering pizza or calling an Uber – by interacting with the AI assistant alone, without the need for accessing other apps.

Exactly how a Viv-powered AI assistant will jive with S Voice we're not sure.

Upgraded OLED material

A new report from South Korea's ET News also reveals a host of new Galaxy S8 features, including an upgrade to the OLED material used in the display. Where the Galaxy S6, S7 and Note 7 range of devices used an M7 OLED material, the Galaxy S8 is reported to be making the change to M8. M8 panels are said to deliver better energy efficiency and display life times.

Near bezel-less design

According to the same report, the Galaxy S8 display will not only feature a new OLED material but will also make the shift to a near bezel-less design. The S8 display is reported to feature dual curves on either side and very minimal bezels above and below the screen. Previous reports have the display at 5.5 inches and 4K resolution. Which leads us to another rumored design change…

No physical home button

We've already heard that the Galaxy S8 will remove the physical home button and instead make the switch to an under-glass fingerprint scanner instead. Previous rumors indicated an optical fingerprint reader that could be incorporated into the display itself, rather than in the chin at the bottom of the screen.

Volume and power buttons will reportedly be touch-based rather than physical.

But the Korean report notes that the implementation of this scanner type is complicated and that a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is also being considered. The report also claims that the volume and power buttons will be touch-based rather than physical to make the Galaxy S8 design "sleek and graceful".

Dual camera setup

The Galaxy S8 camera is rumored to introduce a dual-lens setup like we've already seen on the LG G5 and V20, the iPhone 7 Plus and the Huawei P9 and Mate 9. An iris scanner will reportedly complement the front-facing camera while the primary camera on the back will feature two lenses with one dedicated to capturing depth information.

Three-coil wireless charging

Finally, the Korean report mentions the addition of an extra wireless charging coil in the Galaxy S8 for a total of three. This will reportedly allow for more efficient wireless charging over a wider area. It would also mean less importance need be placed on the exact positioning of the device on the wireless charging pad.

As always, it's still relatively early days yet, and the rumor mill has a habit of churning out more reports than facts, so take all of this under advisement. There's no guaranteeing any of the information in these reports will make it into the final design, but if even half of these rumors turn out to be true, Samsung is clearly shooting for the stars with the Galaxy S8. Let's just hope that by trying to cram this much "new" into the Galaxy S8 that Samsung doesn't bungle it.

Which of these rumors is your favorite? What would you like to see in the Galaxy S8?

What would you change about the Huawei Mate 9? [Poll of the Week]

huawei-mate-9-hands-on-aa8-imp

Last week's poll summary: Out of over 8,900 total votes, a whopping 72.7% of our readers said they would buy the Xiaomi Mi MIX if it came to the United States. 18.1% of our readers said they would rather wait for reviews to go live before making a buying decision, and only 7% of our readers said they would not buy the Mi MIX.

Are you listening, Xiaomi?

Huawei recently took the wraps off a number of interesting products last week, including the Huawei Fit activity tracker and of course, the flagship Huawei Mate 9.

With a big 5.9-inch display, powerful Kirin 960 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage and a 4,000mAh battery, the Mate 9 certainly boasts some top-of-the-line specs. Photographers might also take a liking to this device, as the Mate 9 comes with an impressive dual camera setup on the back. It has dual 20 and 12MP cameras on the rear, with an f/2.2 aperture, phase detection and laser detection autofocus.

Not every phone is perfect, though, and it could be argued that the Mate 9 comes with a few downfalls. For starters, the 5.9-inch display only has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, so it's not going to be as sharp as many of the other flagships out there. Plus, the Mate 9 comes with an LCD panel, which means it may not be as vibrant as other devices that sport OLED displays. It should also be noted that speaker placement isn't the best. The device has two bottom-firing speakers, which likely won't be as immersive as front-firing speakers.

So, tell us – what would you change about the Huawei Mate 9? Would you have preferred a Quad HD screen? Would you rather the phone have front-facing speakers? Be sure to cast your vote in the poll below, and if you have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment below. We look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Third party speakers may help Google Home take on Amazon Echo

September 30, 2016

It's been two years since Amazon first launched the Echo and the little device seems to have been a big hardware hit for the company. Amazon doesn't like to talk sales figures, but third party research suggests that the Echo has secured a much bigger market share than similar products from major audio brands. The success of Echo has set Amazon up as a leader in the smart home space, which wasn't one of the company's original priorities, leaving the likes of the new Google Home to play catch-up.

If you're eager to hop on the smart home trend, you can grab the Amazon Echo at today's discounted price using the button below.

One year later, Verizon rolls out Android Marshmallow to the BlackBerry Priv

Verizon is now rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the BlackBerry Priv. The update, which brings the device up to software version AAH376, arrives almost exactly a year after the Priv was released and six months after the Marshmallow software was first deployed to unlocked Privs.

The "new" features introduced in the update are outlined on Verizon's BlackBerry Priv support page and include:

  • Wi-Fi calling
  • Google Now on Tap
  • Granular app permissions
  • Better BlackBerry Keyboard predictions
  • DTEK improvements
  • Changes to the Phone and Contacts interfaces
  • Rich text editing for tasks and notes

The BlackBerry Priv's camera app has also received a significant upgrade, now featuring advanced controls and manual capture settings such as Shutter speed, ISO, EV Compensation, White Balance and 24 FPS recording in 4K.

It's a significant update for Priv owners with Verizon, but it's still far too late. Marshmallow is now more than one-year-old, and Android 7.0 is already popping up on non-Google devices. What's more, T-Mobile and AT&T pushed out their Marshmallow updates to the Priv in June and July respectively. Verizon was also one of the last carriers to start selling the device, beginning in March of this year.

Look out for the update arriving over-the-air shortly and give us your thoughts on Verizon's speed to roll out updates in the comments.

Verizon’s Pixel and Pixel XL getting a software update

There is a software update on its way for Verizon's Pixel phones, which should fix Bluetooth issues and improve VR performance.

Verizon is pushing out a new update to build NDE63X, which should address message notification issues that some users are having while connected to vehicle Bluetooth systems as well as improve Daydream View performance, in preparation for the headset's launch this week. You can see the full changelog below:

  • Message notifications while connected to vehicle Bluetooth® systems
  • Daydream View performance
  • Adds New Mexico as a state option during Wi-Fi Calling setup

Although Verizon does not specify whether this is the November security patch, we are fairly certain that it is. After all, we've seen reports of T-Mobile Galaxy S7 devices getting this month's security update from Samsung, so it'd only make sense for Google to do the same for its own phones. If that's the case, non-Verizon Pixel phones should also see the update in the near future.

Make sure to have your phone charged before you update, and let us know if there are other changes you see after updating your phone!
