5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 163rd edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the headlines from the last week:

  • Pokemon Go will have its first in-game event for Halloween. During the next week or so, you'll be able to find spooky looking Pokemon with higher frequency. You'll also get more candy than usual for doing the various tasks. The event lasts until November 1st so you don't have much time left to take advantage. This also comes on the heels of an update that adds some additional features like different colored eggs and various bug fixes.
  • Google Allo received its highly anticipated 2.0 update this week. The changes includes Direct Reply support from the notification shade as well as multitasking support for Android Nougat. It most notably didn't come with SMS/MMS support, a desktop client, or any of the other changes that we were hoping for. However, it is worth noting that it took months for Hangouts to get SMS support as well. The update is rolling out right now.
  • Facebook announced this week that it would stop censoring content that is NSFW. The catch being that it has to be newsworthy. Previously, the site would censor or delete posts if it contained content that they decided was unsuitable for general audiences. Moving forward, that will no longer be the case. Prepare to see some potentially graphic content the next time it also happens to be newsworthy.
  • Minecraft: Pocket Edition received a rather sizable update this last week. The big addition in this update is the inclusion of add-ons. These will add a significant amount of content to the game. There are also now Withers and slash commands. This opens up the game quite a bit, especially with the new add-ons that can add all kinds of in-game content. It's one of the biggest updates the game has ever had.
  • Vine is officially shutting down. The somewhat popular network of six second clips had its ups and downs, but was ultimately not the cash grab that Twitter had hoped it would be. Vine remains functional right now, but it won't be forever. The company also announced a round of layoffs to the employees. Those that use the service should have ample time to download their Vine collection. Twitter has had a lot of issues here lately and this seems to be just the latest one.

neko collector Android Apps WeeklyNeko Collector

[Price: Free]
Neko Collector is actually just the Easter egg game from Android Nougat. It's an open source port of the game and you'll be able to open it up, select a food item, and then wait for cats to show up. There are hundreds to collect overall. The game is extremely low energy since all you have to do is put a food item down and then wait. Eventually, you'll receive a notification telling you that a cat has arrived. Unlike the Nougat Easter egg, this should work on most devices. It's free with no in-app purchases.

Some of the things it helps do is create toasts, use OCR, gestures, time calculations, and even Chrome Custom Tabs. batman Android Apps WeeklyBatman – The Telltale Series

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]

Many have been complaining about release day issues so do beware of those. The game is free to download for the first episode, but you'll have to purchase the other four when they come out.

Android Pay infested with ghosts and goblins for Halloween

android-pay-halloween-animation

Google loves getting in the spirit of things, from its daily Google Doodles on the Search page to annual April 1st pranks. At this time of year though there's only one day on everyone's minds, and that's Halloween. So Google has uploaded a whole host of Halloween-inspired animations in Android Pay.

Android Pay AASee also: Android Pay to add support for Visa Checkout and MasterCard Masterpass payment services12

The animations appear above your digital card on the payment screen, so you'll get a frightful reminder of the joys of consumerism with every purchase you make. The animations are only available in the U.S., UK and Australia (where Android Pay is available) and you'll need the latest version of Android Pay in order to see them. Here's one of them in action:

If Monday is getting a little too close for you and you're still not prepared, remember: Google has updated its annual Frightgeist list of the most searched-for costumes. If you're the laconic type and just can't go past a little Android-inspired fun, you could always go dressed as a Galaxy Note 7 – because no one's going to want to hang around you long enough to chat. Other timely tech-inspired options would be AirPods, Google Assistant or the 3.5mm headphone jack…

Let us know your favorite animation in the comments below. What will you be dressing up as this year?

Not to be outdone by T-Mobile's very tempting half-price rebate, Verizon is upping its Pixel game by offering up to $300 on eligible trade-ins. Verizon may have the carrier angle locked down as the exclusive Pixel partner right now, but the availability of unlocked Pixels via Google and Project Fi means now is not the time to take their big red eye off the ball.

Mobile to represent 75% of internet traffic next year

oneplus_3_google_search_bar

According to a new forecast from Zenith, next year, three-quarters of global internet traffic will come from mobile devices. While we were all likely aware of the internet increasingly becoming mobile-first, 75% is a huge proportion when you consider the number of desktops and laptops still out there.

Ghostery Browser best security apps for androidSee also: 10 best Android browsers of 2016108

As Zenith notes, internet access from mobile devices skyrocketed in recent years, with smartphones and tablets representing just 40% of global web access in 2012. This year that number has risen to 68% and Zenith predicts it will rise to 79% globally by 2018.

In Spain, the country with the highest mobile internet usage rates, that number is already around 85%. As far as smartphone penetration goes, Zenith claims Ireland has the highest percentage of smartphone users, with a massive 92% of the Irish reported to own a smartphone. Singapore comes next with 91%.

Zenith forecasts that, concomitant to the rise in internet use from mobile devices, there will be a plenitude of new mobile advertising to go with it. So much so that 60% of global advertising revenue in 2018 is predicted to be mobile-driven.

The company predicts that mobile-first advertising will be worth $134 billion worldwide in 2018. For reference, that figure is greater than the estimated global advertising budgets for newspapers, magazines, cinema and outdoor advertising combined.

What percentage of the time do you think you access the internet from a mobile device? How do you deal with mobile ads?
