Xiaomi Mi MIX Hands on – the future of smartphones?

While everyone was privy to the launch to the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, Xiaomi took everyone by surprise at their press event in Beijing a few days ago with the introduction of a near bezel-less smartphone. Granted, this isn't the first of its kind that we've seen, but Xiaomi has definitely improved on what was available before with devices like the Sharp Aquos Crystal, in terms of design, aesthetics, specifications, and features. We go hands on with the Xiaomi Mi MIX!

There being practically no bezels on three sides of the display including above it brings up some interesting questions with regards to the proximity sensor and the speaker to listen to calls. Xiaomi has managed to circumvent their need by using a sonar-based sensor and by placing the speaker below the display and using ceramic vibrations to allow for the audio from a call to be heard. Everything else has been placed below the display, including the front-facing camera, resulting in a more upward facing perspective when using it because of its placement.

Of course, it's all about the screen with this device, with the Mi MIX featuring a 91.3% screen to body ratio. The device comes with a 6.4-inch IPS LCD display with a 2048 x 1080 resolution, and anyone looking for additional screen real estate for work or play will have no complaints with this phone. The display and the phone are truly a sight to behold, and is certainly going to garner a lot of attention.

The Mi MIX is built with ceramic, which gives it a very elegant and shiny look. The phone is a touch unwieldy however, not only due to its size, which actually isn't all that bigger than other smartphones that feature much smaller 5.5-inch displays, but because the ceramic makes the phone very slippery. Xiaomi has included a high quality soft leather case in the box that helps provide a lot more grip.

Under the hood, the Mi MIX packs what you would expect from any current generation flagship smartphone, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, backed by the Adreno 530 GPU and 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM depending on which version you opt for. The premium version visually differs from the standard iteration by featuring 18k rings around the camera unit and the fingerprint scanner on the back.

The former also comes with 256 GB of internal storage, compared to the 128 GB that is available with the latter. Regardless of which version you pick, performance should not be an issue with either, and the storage in both cases should be more than enough to store all your apps, files, photos, and videos. The device doesn't come with expandable storage capabilities, but very few people, if any, will miss this feature.

The Mi MIX comes with a 16 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing unit, and keeping everything running is a large 4,000 mAh battery. We can't wait to put this device through its paces, and luckily, we do have a review unit already, so you can expect a comprehensive review to be available shortly.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX will be available in China from November 4, priced at RMB 3,499 (~$519) for the 4 GB of RAM and RMB 3,999 (~$593) for the 6 GB of RAM iteration. However, with this device being a concept phone, it will be manufactured in limited quantities, and it is unfortunately quite unlikely to make its way to other markets around the world. You may still be able to import it, but you will have to make sure of network connectivity before doing so.

While its lack of availability is unfortunate, Xiaomi is certainly paving the way for what the future hopefully holds, and in a year where smartphone design hasn't caused much excitement, the Xiaomi Mi MIX is a breathe of fresh air. Stay tuned with Android Authority for the in-depth review of the Xiaomi Mi MIX, and more on the company's other big launch at the event, the Mi Note 2!

From Vines to GIFs: Giphy wants to become the new home for Vines

giphy-vine-app-icons

It's always sad to see the end of a social network. All those countless hours spent pouring creativity, love and attention into a creator's posts, gone in an instant. When Twitter announced it would be killing off Vine in no short order, a lot of folks were left wondering what would happen to all those six-second Vines? Would the endless loop finally come to an end?

instagram-live-video-storiesSee also: Instagram live video streaming might be on its way4

While Twitter stated it wouldn't kill off the vine.co website that continues to hosts Vines, that always felt more like a Vine graveyard than a living, breathing environment for Vine stars like Damn Daniel, Jérôme Jarre and KingBach. This is where Giphy decided to step in with a lifeline, offering an upload tool to transform Vines into GIFs.

It actually makes a lot of sense: I mean, where better to give Vines a second chance at popularity than the endless loops of Giphy? What's even better is that Giphy won't just convert the Vines to lossy GIF format but will also store the original video files as well. The tool isn't available yet, but Giphy promises it's coming soon.

When did you give up on Vine? Are GIFs better than video loops?

The “explosion-proof” Elephone S7 looks kind of… familiar

elephone-s7-black-front-and-back

What has happened to smartphone design lately, honestly? The problem of everyone copying everyone else has gotten so bad that now every phone looks basically the same. Is it a Huawei? Vivo? Samsung? Honor? OPPO? You know the design world has turned upside down when Xiaomi of all companies has the most unique design around (in the Mi MIX). Enter the familiar sounding and even more familiar looking Elephone S7…

oneplus 3 review aa-14See also: Best Chinese Android phones66

Notwithstanding the blatant ripoff of the Galaxy S7 design and name, the Elephone S7 does look pretty good on paper. With a starting price of just $139.99, you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking phone for the price, especially one with a curved display. Even the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 starts at around $400.

Specs and price

There are multiple specs options available for the Elephone S7: a 2 GB of RAM with 16 GB of storage base model for $139.99 (in gold only), a 3 GB/32 GB version with varying price points ($169.99 for gold, $189.99 for midnight blue, $199.99 for black and $209.99 for green) and a 4 GB/64 GB version ($199.99 for gold, $229.99 for blue, $239.99 for black and $249.99 for green).

elephone-s7-colors-rear

For those prices, you'll get either a 5.2-inch or a 5.5-inch Full HD LCD with bezel-less 3D glass, deca-core Helio X20 chipset with ARM Mali T880 GPU and Android Marshmallow. The Elephone S7 also packs a 13 MP f/2.2 camera on the rear and a 5 MP front-facing camera. The Elephone S7 supports microSD expansion, dual-SIM, NFC and houses a 3,000 mAh battery.

"Explosion-proof" guarantee

The Elephone S7 has the same metal mid-frame and curves on both the front and back as the Galaxy S7 Edge. But you're probably dying to know what's going on with that "explosion-proof" claim, right? The S7 offers guaranteed three layers of explosion protection, because that's apparently a selling point these days.

elephone-s7-screen-sizes

There's an "explosion-proof membrane" inside the S7 to protect you from a battery that Elephone assures us is completely tested against explosions, all wrapped up in a tough outer "explosion-proof TPU shell". That's a lot of explosion proofing for a battery that's apparently guaranteed not to explode, but as they say, it's better to be safe than sorry.

If this wasn't a real phone already up for pre-order I'd think it was a particularly clever joke. But real it is and you can get one shipped to you worldwide. All jokes aside, the Elephone S7 is easily the best looking phone you'll find for as little as $139.99. I'm not going to vouch for the software, camera or… anything really, but if you're into quirky Chinese phones this might just be a bit of fun.

Do you think "explosion protection" will become a thing? How good do you think the Elephone S7 will be?

WhatsApp under fire for sharing user data with Facebook

whatsapp-facebook-app-icons

These user data stories are always interesting because half of us don't care if one app shares our data with another, especially one that owns them. The other half of us get all riled up and hit the comments with fire in our hearts and venom on our tongues (or is it fingers?). But as app users we're in the business of giving away our information and even when we're angry we typically continue using the services that we feel have slighted us.

Such is the case with WhatsApp, which has just received warnings from EU privacy regulators reprimanding it for sharing user data with its parent company Facebook. Recent changes to WhatsApp's terms allow the messaging service to share your phone number with Facebook, filling in yet another piece of Facebook's all-encompassing picture of you.

Recent changes to WhatsApp's terms allow the messaging service to share your phone number with Facebook.

This is the first such change to WhatsApp's terms and conditions since Facebook acquired the company back in 2014. But the EU's 28 data protection authorities have sent letters to WhatsApp requesting the app stop sharing any user data with Facebook until "appropriate legal protections could be assured".

That warning hasn't stopped Italian antitrust watchdogs from already launching a probe into the transmission of user data from WhatsApp to Facebook though. As Reuters reports: "WhatsApp's new privacy policy involves the sharing of information with Facebook for purposes that were not included in the terms of service when users signed up, raising questions about the validity of users' consent".

As always, be careful what you agree to. Not just when installing an app but also when installing an update or agreeing to a change in terms and conditions. If you couldn't care less what gets shared about you then carry on as you were, but if this kind of story concerns you the least you can do is take the time to read the fine print before hitting "install", "update" or "I agree".

Do you care if WhatsApp shares your data with Facebook? How do you manage your online privacy?

LG V20 now available in Canada, unlocked version coming to U.S. in November

LG V20 review-8

Fans of the LG V20 in the Great White North are now able to get their hands on the latest and greatest from South Korea's other smartphone manufacturer. The LG V20 is available north of the border at both Wind Mobile and through Videotron. Meanwhile, unlocked V20s will be on sale in the U.S. in early November.

Canada

Unfortunately for our Canadian friends, conversion rates ain't what they used to be, so the V20 will set you back a substantial sum. Videotron has it outright for CAD$1,029.95 and Wind manages to just keep it under a grand at CAD$999.

There are also several options for contract-based V20 ownership. Videotron has the V20 starting at CAD$249.95 on a monthly plan worth CAD$79.95 for 24 months. Wind Mobile will let you walk away with a V20 for CAD$349 on a CAD$25/month plan.

Fortunately, those that buy the V20 in Canada are also entitled to a free pair of B&O Play H3 headphones to make use of the V20's excellent Quad DAC. If you need a quick primer on what a DAC is and why four of them is better than one, take a look at Rob Triggs' excellent explainer.

U.S.

If you haven't already pulled the trigger on a carrier-locked V20 in the U.S. you'll be pleased to know that unlocked versions will be arriving in early November. Online retailers including Newegg and B&H Photo are taking pre-orders now.

Both B&H and Newegg have a $799.99 price tag on the unlocked V20. While this is admittedly high, it's still cheaper than the outright prices asked by some U.S. carriers. U.S. pre-orders will also score a free pair of B&O headphones as well as a LG G Pad 7.0 tablet. Newegg will also gift you a 10,050 mAh Orico Quick Charge 3.0 Powerbank.

Newegg is shipping the V20 on November 11 while B&H promises availability at the "beginning of November". You'll need to pre-order by November 20 in both cases to get the free headphones though.

What are your thoughts on the V20? What is the best phone around right now?

Samsung Galaxy S8: all the rumors in one place

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition-17

At this stage it would be an understatement to say that a lot is riding on the Galaxy S8. Samsung has already set the hype train in motion though, promising it will have a "slick design", an "improved camera" and an "enhanced artificial intelligence service". But in the face of the Note 7 recall demolishing all of Samsung Mobile's Q3 profits, the company needs to pull out all the stops if the Galaxy S8 is going to right the good ship Galaxy. Here's what we know so far.

S7 vs note5 bigger pixel more pixel-4See also: Why Samsung would be crazy to kill the Galaxy Note brand62

Samsung Galaxy S8: release date

Samsung has come out and publicly denied rumors that the Galaxy S8 will see an accelerated launch. The most logical prediction currently is that the Galaxy S8 release date will be February 26. This is the Galaxy S series' usual time slot on the main press day prior to MWC 2017. Availability will likely be within 2-3 weeks of the announcement.

Samsung Galaxy S8: price

If Samsung does go all out on the Galaxy S8 it's reasonable to believe that the price might go up due to increased component costs. However, Samsung might be tempted to keep the price right where it is – or even reduce it slightly – in order to attract as many consumers as it possibly can…

Regardless, Samsung needs to recoup money as quickly as possible and the S8 is their flagship, so a high price tag is guaranteed. Depending on whether multiple storage options are introduced, you can at least expect to pay the same as the current Galaxy S7 range.

That would be $669 for an unlocked regular version with 32 GB of storage or $769 for a 32 GB Edge variant. It must be noted that some rumors put the base storage option on the Galaxy S8 at 64 GB, so it that pans out to be true it may potentially add a little to the price. The same goes for the possible addition of dual cameras and an iris scanner.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition-12

Samsung Galaxy S8: specs

Of course, none of the Galaxy S8 specs that follow are confirmed, but the rumor mill is starting to see some consistency in the claims being made. The current crop of Galaxy S8 spec rumors doing the rounds include a 5.5-inch 4K Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 830 or Exynos 8895 chipset and 6 GB of RAM. There are also (older) rumors of a 5.1-inch QHD version of the S8 as well.

Samsung Galaxy S8: camera

The Galaxy S8 has also been rumored to feature an improved dual-lens camera. According to the latest reports out of South Korea, Samsung is opting for two 16 MP cameras on the back with an 8 MP front-facing camera, but you can pretty much pick any number between 12 and 30 and you'll find a report to match. Samsung is, however, rumored to be working on a new camera with a super-wide f/1.4 aperture.

Samsung Galaxy S8: design

Very little is yet know about the "slick design" recently promised by Samsung's vp of mobile communications. At this point we can't say if Samsung has a major design overhaul up its sleeve or if the Galaxy S8 will follow the same refinement trajectory we've been seeing since the Galaxy S6.

One interesting Galaxy S8 rumor is that all four sides of the device will feature curved glass, including the top and bottom. Another rumor claims there will be two Galaxy S8 options in different sizes – 5.1 inches and 5.5 inches – and that they will both feature dual-screen curves like the S7 Edge.

Other rumored design changes include the removal of the physical home button, the resurrection of a removable battery (which relates to a theory circulating about the cause of the Galaxy Note 7 battery fires), and even a full-screen, bezel-less display.

Samsung Galaxy S8: features

Samsung's vp of mobile communications also went on record promising an "enhanced artificial intelligence service" for the Galaxy S8. While this might have a connection to Samsung's recent acquisition of AI firm Viv Labs, it might also be a little too late in the game to completely replace S Voice or even just integrate Viv's tech into Samsung's existing voice assistant.

The Galaxy S8 is also expected to support Google's Daydream VR platform and will of course make the shift to USB Type-C, meaning it will also be compatible with Samsung's newest Gear VR. The Galaxy S8 is also rumored to sport an iris scanner and will likely get a UI redesign similar to that found on the short-lived Note 7.

Are you excited for the Galaxy S8? What feature are you looking forward to most?
