Xiaomi sells a million smartphones in India in 18 days; aims to be a market leader

Xiaomi Mi Max-12

In a note published on Xiaomi India's Facebook page, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has announced Mi India's latest milestone having sold 1 million smartphones in just 18 days as the online retailers in the country went on an overdrive for the festive season.

A big round of thanks to Manu and Hugo for their outstanding leadership, to everyone at Mi India for their dedication, and to the business teams in China for their support. I am extremely proud of each one of you! I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our partners in India, especially Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal, for their support.

When we entered India, there was extremely fierce competition. We have achieved such extraordinary growth in India firstly because of our vision to bring innovation to everyone with our high-quality products at incredible prices. Secondly, we have an amazing team in India. We will continue investing in India to deliver the best products to our Mi fans — expanding our supply, ensuring the high quality of our products, and further improving our after-sales service.

The core of the Xiaomi model is creating high-quality products, making friends with our users, and operating our business extremely efficiently. This model has been proven in China. I believe that the Xiaomi model will resonate across the world, starting with India.

Incidentally, earlier this month, Mi India announced that it had sold more than 500,000 smartphones in less than three days between October 1 to 3, an industry-first milestone.

India is an extremely important market in Xiaomi's globalization strategy and their largest market outside of mainland China. According to the Lei Jun's post, Xiaomi aims to capture the largest market share in India within 3-5 years.

Huawei introduces next-generation Kirin 960 chipset

Huawei Kirin 960 spec breakdown

At a media briefing here in China today, Huawei unwrapped its new HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset, which is expected to power its upcoming rumoured smartphone for next month. Featuring the latest generation Mali GPU, fastest ARM CPU cores and upgraded networking technology, the Kirin 960 promises several advancements over previous generations, and rival processors.

The Kirin 960 is made up of four high-performance ARM Cortex A73 cores at 2.4GHz alongside four low-power Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, and built using a 16nm manufacturing process. The Kirin 960 is also the first processor to use the new Mali-G71 MP8 GPU, which is rumoured to be inside the Galaxy S8 next year.

Huawei Kirin 960 CPU performance

During the briefing, Huawei took the example of benchmark scores and showed that while the A10 Fusion chipset inside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is faster in a single-core test, the Kirin 960 leads the way in multi-core testing. However, Huawei says that faster random read/write speeds thanks to UFS 2.1 storage allows the Kirin 960 to 'feel faster' than other chipsets.

The Mali-G71 MP8 GPU also brings much needed improvements to the gaming element of the user experience, with performance 180% faster than the previous generation Mali-T880 GPU used inside previous Kirin chipsets (and other devices). Combined with support for Vulkan support, this allows the chipset to support much better gaming (40 FPS vs 10FPS on previous GPUs) while also ensuring the load on the CPU doesn't create a bottleneck that affects the user experience. Huawei went further to say that in its own testing, out of the most popular 14 apps used in China, the Kirin 960 was the fastest to open 13 of them when compared with the competition.

The Kirin 960 also brings native CDMA support, allowing it to be compatible with markets where CDMA and 2G services are still in operation, whereas previously Huawei would have had to license from Qualcomm. The Kirin 960 also brings support for 4 component carriers (4CC) for LTE versus 3CC on other chipsets, which essentially adds extra channels for data throughput, ensures a much wider range and makes it much easier to hit peak data speeds of 600Mbps.

The Kirin 960 also offers Cat 12 LTE download speeds and Cat 13 upload, as well as the widest range of radio frequencies; supporting the spectrum from 330MHz to 3.8GHz opens up support for a wide range of global carriers and essentially means your phone should work in every global market. The improvements don't stop there as Huawei has also improved radio performance for specific challenging situations such as data usage on a high-speed train and boasts 100% reliability (whereas rivals only ever achieve up to 99% and usually a lot lower).

The new ISP brings smartphone cameras 'closer to the vision of the human eye'

The Kirin 960 also brings a new Image Signalling Processor (ISP) which boasts advancements for camera capabilities, although this does largely depend on the optics used in a smartphone as well. The new ISP brings smartphone cameras "closer to the vision of the human eye" and creates clearer images with improvements in fine detail reproduction. On stage, Huawei used the example of a traditional eye test to show how close the Kirin 960 comes to what we perceive from the human eye, as well as how much more advanced it is than the iPhone 7 Plus. The Kirin 960 also supports a wider range of refocusing options, focal lengths and field of view than previous generations although this will, again, depend on the actual optics of the smartphone as well.

Like most chipset manufacturers, Huawei has focused heavily on battery life and through its work with partners, the Kirin 960 offers much better battery life. Using Pokemon Go as an example, Huawei said the i6 inside the Kirin 960 allows users to go from just half a day's battery life when playing Pokemon Go to 1.2 days thanks to the improvements, which include low-power GPS. Essentially, the i6 core allows you to experience much better battery life without changing your habits.

Huawei Kirin 960 SoC breakdown

Security is also a major focus in the Kirin 960, with Huawei boasting the new chipset is certified by both UnionPay and the People's Bank of China's new digital requirements for mobile payments. The biggest difference in the Kirin 960 is that mobile payments are embedded into the SoC itself alongside over 4 billion transistors making it more difficult for thieves to crack encryption. In a video, the company showed that it's theoretically possible for hackers to remove a security chipset from a phone to access the data but having a security design that embeds into the chipset itself makes this less appealing.

The security improvements also include a new 3-tier security system that makes it harder to crack the encryption and support for financial industry standard encryption. Huawei also says it aims to obtain certification from foreign bodies for its security solutions, presumably so it's able to offer mobile payment services in other markets as well. Huawei hasn't revealed which handsets will use the new chipset but presumably, the first handset will be the rumoured Mate 9 when it's announced on November 3 in Munich, Germany. We'll be there bringing you all the info so stay tuned and we'll also have a deep dive looking at the Kirin 960 in a lot more detail in the very near future!

If you live in Sydney, Australia, you could be lucky enough to be one of the first in the world to go into a retail store and come out with one of Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. The Telstra store on George Street will have that honor of selling the Android 7.0 Nougat phones beginning at 8 a.m. local time on Thursday, October 20.

Yes, those phones have been available for pre-order from Google, Telstra and other online locations for a while. Indeed, some lucky Telstra buyers have already received their phones thanks to an early shipping mistake from the carrier. However,  since pre-orders that are put in now for the Pixel could take weeks to ship, going into brick-and-mortar retail stores could be a faster way of getting the phones, at least for the first week.

More retailers will be selling the Google Pixel and Pixel XL on Thursday in their respective time zones, including Verizon Wireless in the US. If you haven't put in your online pre-order, do you plan to walk into a store and get the phone the old-fashioned way?

Foursquare’s Marsbot is a Siri-like assistant for food and restaurants

Screen Shot 2016-10-18 at 17.51.11

Foursquare introduced Marsbot for iOS a few months ago: Marsbot not only answers your questions about restaurants, but it tracks where you eat and gives you recommendations even before you ask. Well, this chatbot – although Foursquare insists that it's not – is now available for Android users.

Ever since the introduction of Siri, companies have been rushing to get their own version of chatbot on the market. From Samsung's S-Voice all the way back when the Galaxy SIII launched to Google's latest Assistant, letting users converse with a virtual assistant seems to be the latest fad in the world of technology. And Foursquare is no exception.

Similar to Yelp, Foursquare gives you an overview of where to go out to eat, drink, shop, or visit with pictures and user reviews. The company introduced its Siri-like assistant Marsbot back in May for iOS users, and now the app is available through the Play Store.

What's interesting about the app is that everything is done through the most ubiquitous and simple mode of communication: text messages. After you install the app, it will ask you for your phone number – unfortunately, it seems like you are required to have a US number to use the app for the moment. And as soon as you enter your number, you will receive a text message from Marsbot.

What's interesting about the app is that everything is done through the most ubiquitous and simple mode of communication: text messages.

Once you have everything set up, the Marsbot app itself runs in the background, and you don't actually need to open up the app unless you want to enable the vegetarian option. Marsbot basically tracks what kinds of restaurants you frequent, and gives you recommendations based on that data through the SMS thread it started when you signed up. You can also ask Marsbot for suggestions simply by sending it a text. It's pretty neat, if you ask me.

Foursquare does mention that the app is in its early stages and availability might be limited to certain areas in the US. If you are curious to give it a go, however, click the link below! Just FYI, according to the company, users in NYC and SF will get first dibs, but it seems to be working fine for me here in New Hampshire.

Google Assistant features a surprise trivia game for Pixel phone owners

google pixel xl initial review aa (32 of 48) google assistant

Google has decided to sneak a fun little Easter egg inside the Google Assistant on the new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. If you're a trivia buff, you'll definitely like this one.

google pixel xl initial review aa (19 of 48) front featuredSee also: Google Pixel XL initial review: first 48 hours118

Ars Technica reports that all a Pixel owner has to do is open up Google Assistant and then say, "I'm Feeling Lucky" to begin the game. "I'm Feeling Lucky" is a reference to the button on the main Google.com page that, when pressed, takes you to a random search result. The game, which is actually called Are You Feeling Lucky, comes complete with theme music, audience reactions and a host that likes to throw out sharp one-liners.

In many ways, Are You Feeling Lucky is similar to the classic You Don't Know Jack PC games that also involved fast trivia questions from a snarky, but unseen host. This new game even allows for multiple players. Each person answer a question and, at the end of the round, Google Assistant proclaims the winner. This is definitely a welcome addition and could be a popular way to spend some idle time, especially if you are with a group of friends.

What do you think of this neat Easter Egg in Google Assistant? Would you like to see it expanded to other Android phones?
