Beats is a once popular rhythm game that was also open source. The developers halted development of the app in 2014 and the app's Github page is similarly bereft of recent updates. That said, it's still a pretty solid game. It uses classic DDR-style controls where you'll have to hit directional buttons (and sometimes hold) in accordance with the beat of the song. It comes with ten sample songs but you can download more from the menu. The project is all but defunct, but it is completely free so there's no harm in trying it out to see if it works for you.

BeatX has been one of the more consistent rhythm games on Android. It also features a DDR-style method of play with directional buttons and holds. You'll also have access to a single player mode, doubles mode, and split-screen multiplayer. On top of being a solid title, the game also features tons of content. You'll also be able to upload your own files as long as they are in in the proper formats (.sm, .smzip, .dwi). It's a fairly comprehensive game. We also like its frequent updates.

Cytus is one of a few rhythm games on Android that are developed by Rayark International. This game features 200 tracks with over 400 total variants across nine difficulties. This one takes a break from the standard DDR-style and instead makes you tap notes as they pass through the line. Unlike many games in this space, Cytus has a story line that you can follow and play through. You can purchase more songs and song packs as in-app purchases.

Deemo is the second of three rhythm games on this list developed by Rayark. No, it's not a sponsored list. These devs just do good work. Deemo contains a lot of similarities to Cytus. You'll be able to play through a story line. The game is anime themed and contains interesting game mechanics. This one comes with 40 free tracks in story mode and you can purchase more as in-app purchases in the form of song packs. It's not quite as massive as Cytus, but it's still pretty good.

Dynamix is one of the newer generation of rhythm games that have done very well. This one features a top-down style of play along with swiping actions that add to the complexity and difficulty. It features 20 songs and you can buy more as in-app purchases. Like many, this one uses an anime-theme with bright, neon colors all over the place. It's one of the more shallow titles in terms of content, but you can try it out without paying anything.

Lanota is one of the most unique rhythm games on this list. Unlike many, it puts a heavy emphasis on the story line. You'll play as the title character as you travel a map and discover new secrets. The actual game mechanics take place on a giant wheel that moves around. This makes the game both challenging and complex in a different way than most others. It features ten levels, three difficulties, 16 tracks, and a picture book that shows you the story. It's definitely unique.

O2Jam is a rhythm game that isn't joking around. You can see in the video below that this game gets rather difficult. It boasts a large song library that revolves around somewhat typical game play mechanics. It's not a perfect experience though, as the game does suffer from some translation issues and an ancient looking interface. Still, it's a free game and it manages to be difficult without losing its ability to be fun. It's good and worth a shot.

TunesHolic is one of the more traditional rhythm games. It uses a flat, colorful style similar to Guitar Hero. There are a variable number of buttons for you to tap and the game features the ability to create step files from any music file on your device. It doesn't always do a good job, but it's still fairly entertaining. You can even control things like speed, difficulty, and more. It's a solid overall option although its execution is still a bit sloppy.

VOEZ is the latest rhythm game out of Rayark. It features a small story line that should be easy to follow along with some unique game mechanics. It relies on the basic "tap the note when it falls" philosophy, but the step lanes move about and you'll have to tap and swipe your way to victory. Because of this, it feels like a slightly different kind of game from other titles. You'll have a set of songs you can play for free and more song packs that can be had as in-app purchases, much likes other Rayark games. It's definitely worth a shot.

Zyon is the one and only game released by developer AQUATRAX. Like many rhythm games on this list, this one features anime-themed content. Instead of dealing with a step lane like normal rhythm games, you'll have a number of buttons around the screen that you'll need to hit. The game will give you 30 tracks for free, three difficulties, and Google Play Games leaderboards and achievements. It's a bit different, but it's still a ton of fun.
