Best smartwatches (October 2016)

Smartwatches are still a very new thing to a lot of people, and for good reason. You don't absolutely need one to get through the day, and some of the best smartwatches are much too expensive for many folks out there. With that said, they are good for a lot of things. They can provide you with an easy way to get information, allow you to dismiss or reply to new messages without having to pull out your phone, and much more.

Now, we've already rounded up some of the best Android Wear watches and fitness trackers you can buy, but what about the other wearables that are worth considering? With so many smartwatches on the market, we understand choosing the right one can be a bit daunting. We're here to help!

Here are the best smartwatches you can buy right now.

Editor's note: We'll be updating this list regularly as new devices launch.
Update, October 2016: This month we added the Apple Watch Series 2 to our list.

Upcoming: Samsung Gear S3

Samsung's Gear S2 smartwatch from 2015 was a very impressive offering, and now the company is back with yet another pair of Tizen-powered smartwatches, the Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier! Featuring the same great rotating bezel, an all-new design and many more enhancements, these new wearables are definitely a step in the right direction.

Whether you're looking for a more classy or sporty look, the Gear S3 line probably has something for you. The Classic model is geared towards folks who want to wear their watch to work or out on the town. It should be noted that the Classic version does not come with LTE connectivity, though, so you'll need to be paired with a smartphone if you want to receive notifications on your wrist. If you're looking for something a bit more rugged that features LTE connectivity, the Frontier version is the watch for you. Both versions also come with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, as well as big 380mAh batteries and 1.3-inch Super AMOLED displays.

We're still waiting to review the Gear S3, but we're pretty sure it will make our list as one of the best smartwatches available on the market.

Pebble Time

As of right now, the smartwatch landscape is packed with devices that feature touchscreen displays, 1-day battery life and over-$200 price tags. The Pebble Time might not have the best screen or the most powerful processor, but it's the overall experience that made us choose this device as our top pick.

For starters, it has a color e-paper display that's easy to read in all lighting conditions. And because the e-paper display is so great with battery life, the Pebble Time can easily last more than 5 days on a single charge. You just won't get that with other Android Wear or Apple watches. Plus, Pebble's new Timeline interface is quirky, intuitive and quite useful when you're trying to plan your day. It's compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones, too, so you don't need to pass this one up if you don't have the right phone.

It's also worth noting that the Pebble Time largely undercuts the competition in the pricing department. You can purchase the Pebble Time in a variety of different color options for under $100. For those looking for something a little more classy, the Pebble Time Steel is also available on Amazon for around $170.

Specs

  • 1.25-inch LCD display with 144 x 168 resolution, 177ppi
  • ARM Cortex-M4 processor
  • 256KB of RAM
  • 16MB of on-board storage
  • 150mAh battery
  • PebbleOS
  • 40.5 x 37.5 x 9.5mm, 42.5g
  • 30m water resistance, ISO22810 rating

Motorola Moto 360 (2nd Generation)

The original Moto 360 was one of the best Android Wear watches around for quite some time, and now its successor is also at the top of the list.

The Motorola Moto 360 (2nd Gen.) has a bigger battery than its predecessor, a Snapdragon 400 processor and comes in two different sizes to fit more users' wrists. You'll even be able to customize it with Moto Maker. Overall, the biggest advantages the new Moto 360 brings to the table are the refreshed processing package, a customizable design and the addition of lugs that will make it much easier to swap out watch bands.

We should also note that if you're more of a fitness-oriented person, the Moto 360 Sport is also a great option. It's cheaper than the standard Moto 360, and comes with a large array of fitness tracking features.

42mm variant:

  • 1.37-inch IPS LCD display with 360 x 325 resolution, 233ppi
  • 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor

Huawei Watch

The Huawei Watch was first unveiled towards the beginning of 2015 at MWC, though it didn't actually make its way to retail until the tail-end of the summer. Offering a design that is much more "watch-like" then many of its competitors, the Huawei Watch is certainly one of the more attractive Android Wear watches on the market and benefits from easily replaceable watch straps and a long-lasting battery.

For those that aren't a fan of the flat-tire look we've seen with Motorola's circular watches, you'll be happy to know that this isn't the case here. As for the rest of the specs? Everything is pretty standard fare, as most of the newer Android Wear watches feature roughly the same internals. That said, the AMOLED display on the Huawei Watch is one of the best displays available in the Android Wear market right now.

As far as pricing is concerned, starting at $350, the Huawei Watch isn't at the very top of the pricing totem, but it is certainly not the lowest priced either.

Specs

  • 1.4-inch AMOLED display with 400 x 400 resolution, 286ppi
  • 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of on-board storage
  • 300mAh battery
  • Android Wear
  • 42.0 x 42.0 x 11.3mm
  • IP67 dust and water resistance

Samsung Gear S2

Samsung has been making smartwatches for a long time, but it didn't make anything good until the Gear S2. And honestly, the company hit it out of the park with this one.

This Tizen-powered smartwatch sports a 1.2-inch AMOLED display, a powerful Exynos 3250 processor, plenty of on-board storage and a battery that can easily last a full day (we even managed to get 2 full days in our full review). Not only does it excel in the hardware department, Samsung also implemented a handy scrolling bezel that lets you navigate the interface with ease. That might sound a little gimmicky, but it's really awesome.

There are a few issues with the Gear S2, however, and they mainly reside in the software department. The Gear S2 is running Tizen, which means at the time of writing this, the platform is lacking some notable apps like Google Maps, Evernote, third-party music streaming apps, and fitness tracking apps like RunKeeper. Of course there are alternatives to these apps that might suffice as well.

All in all, the Gear S2 is a solid smartwatch that brings some really cool ideas to the table. It's available now in Dark Gray and Silver color options for around $240.

Specs

  • 1.2-inch AMOLED display with 360 x 360 resolution, 302ppi
  • 1GHz dual-core Exynos 3250 processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of on-board storage
  • 250mAh battery
  • Tizen
  • 49.8 x 42.3 x 11.4mm, 47g
  • IP68 dust and water resistance

Apple Watch Series 2

Apple-Watch-Series-2-7-1024x578

I know, I know. This is an Apple product. And we only like Android products here, right?

Wrong-o.

The Apple Watch Series 2 is a really nice smartwatch that does exactly what it should. It'll give you quick access to notifications, allow you to pay with your wrist, give you turn-by-turn directions, and it's a decent fitness tracker. And in terms of design, it doesn't feel like Apple cut too many corners with the overall look and feel of the device. Even the Sport model (the cheapest one of the bunch) feels like a well-built piece of hardware.

There are a few downsides to the Watch, though. Battery life isn't stellar, and oftentimes the interface can get really confusing. It's a solid second attempt at a smartwatch, sure, but Apple still has a lot of work to do.

The Apple Watch Series 2 is on the pricier side of the smartwatch landscape at around $369, but you might be lucky enough to find a refurbished model for less than that on Amazon or eBay.

Specs

42mm variant (aluminum):

  • 1.5-inch OLED Retina display with 390 x 312 resolution, 390ppi
  • Apple S2 processor
  • watchOS
  • 42.5 x 36.4 x 11.4mm, 34.2g (case only)
  • 50m water resistance, ISO22810 rating

38mm variant (aluminum):

  • 1.3-inch OLED Retina display with 340 x 272 resolution, 340ppi
  • Apple S2 processor
  • watchOS
  • 38.6 x 33.3 x 11.4mm, 28.2g (case only)
  • 50m water resistance, ISO22810 rating

Report: Android Pay likely to launch in Canada soon

Android Pay AA

For quite long, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay have dominated the mobile payment space in Canada. But as Google looks to be gearing up for an Android Pay support for Interac, Canada's largest debit card provider, the mobile payment landscape in the country is likely to change in the near future.

The latest version of Android Pay (v1.7.135400734) includes strings of code that contain references to Interac, suggesting that debit card holders in Canada may soon be able to make mobile payments through the platform.

  <string name="tp_interac">Interac</string>

Interac is an interbank network consisting of several financial institutions in Canada, including RBC, CIBC, Scotiabank, TD, and Desjardins. It holds a major chunk in the country's financial services market as Visa and MasterCard have limited services there.

It's not clear, however, whether all the major banking firms will support Android Pay or which of them will embrace the platform once it reaches Canada. Although these financial institutions depend on Interac for debit card transactions, each will need to separately sign up for the platform.

Also, there's no hint about the launch date for Android Pay in the country, as details at this moment are scarce. Nonetheless, Android Pay v1.7 is rolling out as an OTA update to residents in the U.S.

Deal: $250 gift card when you purchase Moto Z Droid at Best Buy

Screen Shot 2016-10-12 at 14.42.06

The Galaxy Note7 might be dead, but that doesn't mean there are no other options. Among them is Lenovo's all-new Moto Z or Moto Z Droid as it's known in the US. It is one beautifully-designed modular phone, and right now, Best Buy is offering a $250 gift card with every Moto Z Droid purchase you make.

The Moto Z Droid is exclusively on Verizon here in the US, and if you get one through Best Buy, you will get a $250 Best Buy gift card that you can use on anything in the store. If you've been looking to buy the device for its modularity, it might be the perfect opportunity to save some money on Moto Mods, which can be quite expensive.

The phone can be had for $699.99 off-contract and $201.99 on a two-year contract. If you opt for a monthly payment plan, that's going to be $26 a month for two years.

Just to quickly recap, the Moto Z Droid is an ultra-slim modular phone with a 5.5-inch Quad HD display protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 4. It has a 13-megapixel low-light rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. And yes, for our selfie-enthusiasts, the front camera has an actual LED flash. The phone is powered by the good ole Snapdragon 820 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the battery capacity is on the lower end at 2,600 mAh. And perhaps even more unfortunate is the absence of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

However, the phone does come with a headphone adapter, and more importantly, the Moto Z Droid is arguably the only phone that really gets the whole modularity thing right. You can simple snap a Moto Mod onto the back of the device, and it will attach itself magnetically. Moto Mods range from an extra battery pack to a full-on Hasselblad camera replacement.

Are you interested in buying the Moto Z Droid? Head on over to Best Buy and get your $250 gift card!

New Google app update adds widget support under the search bar

google-app-widget-image

The Google app for Android is quietly rolling out a small but pretty neat new feature. Users will be able to receive small sub-widgets underneath the search bar of the Google app to get quick and easy access to items like commute, weather, local information and more.

Android device owners can check out the new 6.6.14.21 version of the Google app which adds the widget feature. Inside the app, they can go to Settings, and they should see a Widget option. Tapping on that should turn on the feed.

It's worth noting that there won't be a widget under the search bar at all times. We've only been able to make a small weather widget appear once, and it went away after only a few minutes. We imagine there will support for more cards from the Google Now pane in the future, but for now we've only seen weather and traffic widgets.

The new widget feature for the Google app is still rolling out.

Keep in mind that this new version of the Google app has just been released and may only be rolling out to a small number of Android devices at this time. As a result, you may not see the new widget option immediately.

What do you think about this new feature? Will you use it when it becomes available on your phone?

Nude-free Playboy magazine makes its Google Play Store debut

playboy-840x683

Playboy has finally released the digital edition of its 63-year old print magazine. It can now be bought in the Google Play Store. Buyers can pick up a subscription to the digital edition for $17.99 a year, or they can choose to purchase individual issues for $5.99 each.

Playboy has been trying its best to reinvent itself as more of a men's mainstream media property in the past few years, thanks in part to the internet making it much easier to find photos of naked ladies. As a result, the magazine's print subscription has dwindled down to less than 600,000 readers, versus its peak of 5.6 million in the mid-1970s.

As part of this change to the mainstream, the magazine recently made the once unthinkable move of ditching nude pictures as part of the classic pictorials of its monthly Playmates, although the photos are still very racy. That likely allowed the magazine to make its long awaited way to the Google Play Store, which does not allow magazines that are considered to be pornography to be sold in its Newsstand section.

Playboy recently ditched publishing the traditional nude pictures of its Playmates

Playboy is using the ZINIO Pro platform to publish the digital edition, starting with its October 2016 issue. If you decide to download the Playboy magazine app this month, you will also get access to the previous six print issues for free, starting with the first non-nude edition which was released in March 2016.

While Playboy may have just launched the digital edition of its traditional print magazine, it already has two mobile apps in the Google Play Store. One is Playboy Now, which is a companion to its website. The other is Playboy Classic, which includes articles and nude-free pictorials of its older Playmate pictorials from its long history.

What do you think about Playboy's magazine becoming available in the Google Play Store? Would you buy a subscription "just for the articles?"

Huawei Mate 9 leaked in flat and curved-screen variants

Huawei Mate 9 colors

Evan Blass has leaked renders of two variants of the upcoming Huawei Mate 9: a flat-screened and dual curved screen version that looks an awful lot like the Galaxy Note 7. While the wrapping will come off the new phone/s on November 3 in Munich, these renders are apparently the real deal and Blass' sources have confirmed that the previously leaked Mate 9 specs are legit.

huawei mate 8 vs nexus 6p aa (1 of 6)See also: Huawei files trademark for 'SuperCharge', likely for the Mate 9 battery26

The two devices are codenamed Manhattan, for the flat-screened version with no physical home button, and Long Island for the curved display variant with a Samsung-esque home button. According to Blass, the curved screen version may only be scheduled for a Chinese release, while the flat version will be available worldwide.

The high-end, curved screen version with Daydream VR support may only be scheduled for a Chinese release.

Unfortunately for everyone outside China, Long Island is the high-end variant, with a QHD display and support for Google's Daydream VR platform. Considering the Galaxy Note 7-sized hole in many U.S. carriers websites, on retailers shelves and in consumers pockets though, Huawei would be wise to bring their Note 7, I mean, Mate 9 with a curved screen to the U.S. as quickly as possible.

The specs of the Mate 9 are reported to include a 5.9-inch QHD or Full HD display, 64-bit, octa-core Kirin 960 chipset and a variety of memory option topping out at 6 GB of RAM with 256 GB of on-board storage. The dual Leica camera setup is reported to be on deck too, but with a wider f/2.0 aperture and 20 MP resolution.

Thoughts on the curved-screen Mate 9? Will this be the phone to beat?

There’s still time to save $150 on the HTC 10

HTC 10 Themes AA 6

As one door closes, another opens. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 might be gone, but it's not all bad news because HTC is here to cheer us up. The Taiwanese manufacturer has extended its sale of the HTC 10, arguably one of the best phones it's pushed out in the last few years, due to it not selling enough in the first run 'popular demand'.

htc 10 review editors (1 of 1)See also: HTC 10 review!191

In a sale now running until October 16, you can get an HTC 10 in one of four colors for $549 instead of $699. The deal comes straight for HTC website, putting you in a good standing should you ever encounter warranty troubles.

The HTC 10 is an aluminum clad, Snapdragon 820 wielding, 5.2-inch QHD display bearing flagship with a 12-megapixel low-light rear camera. In our review, we called it 'the comeback we've been waiting for', but the hefty price tag might have been a stumbling block for some people. This sizeable reduction should now make it a more attractive prospect.

Go over to www.htc.com if you're interested in picking it up, and watch our HTC 10 video review at the link.
