Android 6.0 Marshmallow rolling out to Sony’s Xperia C4 and C4 Dual

Sony Xperia C4

Sony has a pretty good reputation in the Android world when it comes to software updates. Most of the time the company issues updates in a timely manner, and they usually do a pretty good job at being transparent with their users when it comes to delays.

If you happen to own an Xperia C4 or C4 Dual and have been waiting patiently to get your Marshmallow update, the time has finally come! According to the folks at Xperia Blog, Sony has started rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the Xperia C4 (E5303, E5306) and C4 Dual (E5333, E5343). The C4's update comes with firmware number 27.3.A.0.122 and the C4 Dual will sport firmware number 27.3.B.0.122. At this time it's unclear if the rollout is limited to select markets or available worldwide, but we do know it's making its way to some devices.

Incoming Gmail update will make email on your phone look much prettier

Gmail logo AA

If you've ever opened an email and noticed a less-than-appealing layout, you're not alone. Oftentimes people send out emails that may be well suited for the desktop, but not for mobile devices. For instance, if you receive an promotional email from your bank, you may notice the text is too hard to read, or the buttons are too small to tap. Luckily Google is bringing a fix to Gmail sometime in the near future.

Starting later this month, Gmail will support emails created with responsive design. What is responsive design, you may be asking? Emails created with responsive design can adapt their layout to fit screens of all sizes. That means text, links and buttons will enlarge to make reading and tapping easier on a mobile device. And if you happen to be on the desktop, you'll also see improvements since emails designed for mobile can adapt to fit larger screen sizes.

Also, if you happen to be an email designer, you can check out the Google Apps Developer Blog post for the details about what these new changes mean for you.

Google offering $350k in prizes through its new Project Zero hacking contest

nexus 6p vs nexus 5x aa (24 of 25)

Are you the type that can hack a smartphone? Are you interested in winning up to $200,000? If you answered 'yes' to both of these questions, you should check out Google's new Project Zero hacking contest.

Google, along with plenty of other major tech companies, already have a number of vulnerability rewards programs put in place, but one more can't hurt. That's why, in an effort to continue squashing as many bugs as possible, Google has announced The Project Zero Prize. The goal here is to find a vulnerability or bug chain that can achieve remote code execution on multiple Android devices. There's one catch, though – you'll need to achieve remote code execution by only knowing the device's phone number and associated email address. If you succeed, you'll be able to win the following prizes:

  • First prize: $200,000 USD, awarded to the first winning entry
  • Second prize: $100,000 USD, awarded to the second winning entry
  • Third Prize: At least $50,000 USD awarded by Android Security Rewards, and also awarded to additional winning entries

Additionally, Google says folks who submit a winning entry will be invited to write a short technical report on their entry that will be posted on the Project Zero Blog. Pretty cool, right?

Google notes that this contest is a bit different from other contests. You see, instead of saving up bugs until you have a full bug chain, participants will instead be asked to report the bugs in the Android issue tracker. They can then be used as a part of submission by the participant at any time during the six-month contest period. Only the first person to file a bug will be able to use it as part of their submission, so you'll want to file as early as you can.

If you're interested in learning more about the contest, you'll want to check out the full list of contest rules and FAQs for all the details. The contest started on Tuesday, so get to hacking!

No new Android Wear watches from Motorola, LG or Huawei this year, report claims

moto 360 2nd gen review aa (21 of 27)

If you've been paying attention to the wearable space over the last few months, you may have noticed there's been no shortage of new Android Wear devices making their way to market. Most of the latest Android Wear watches have been from newer companies, too, like Michael Kors, Polar, Nixon, and a few others.

And now that Apple has announced its new Watch Series 2 and Samsung the new Gear S3, the smartwatch space is about to get heated. But unfortunately, according to a new report, some of the veteran Android Wear watch makers are going to sit this one out.

CNET has reported that LG, Huawei and Lenovo's Motorola have no plans to release new smartwatches in the remaining months of the year. Now, even though there are only about three months left in 2016, this is still unfortunate news to anyone who has been waiting for a Moto 360 (3rd Gen.) or Huawei Watch 2.

This is quite an odd shift from last year's big Android Wear push. Just in 2015 alone, Motorola unveiled the Moto 360 (2nd Gen.) and Moto 360 Sport, Huawei launched multiple variants of the Watch, and LG took the wraps off its Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE. And this year, pretty much the only Android Wear veteran to announce a new watch has been ASUS with the new ZenWatch 3.

Why are these three OEMs holding off on bringing new smartwatches to market?

So, why are these three OEMs holding off on bringing new smartwatches to market? According to LG spokesman Ken Hong, the company "wants to see what sticks" before bringing a new watch to market. Motorola, on the other hand, commented that there are too many trade-offs in the current smartwatch component space. For instance, while it may be technically feasible to bring cellular connectivity to a watch, there would be too many trade-offs involved.

According to an unnamed Huawei executive, Huawei says it's waiting for components in smartwatches to shrink and for processors to gain efficiency before moving forward with a successor to the Huawei Watch.

So what does this all mean? Well, Android Wear isn't dead, nor is it dying. I think all three of these companies have pretty good reasons for not bringing new smartwatches to market this year. It looks like we'll just have to wait until sometime in 2017 before we see these OEMs come back to market with new watches.

What do you think? Is this a good move for LG, Huawei and Motorola, or would you rather have seen new devices out of these companies this year? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Nixon Mission Android Wear watch pre-orders go live, starting at $400

Nixon Mission Android Wear smartwatch website

There are plenty of great Android Wear devices on the market nowadays, with options ranging from the classy Moto 360 and Huawei Watch to the sportier Casio Smart Outdoor Watch. Back in March, Nixon, the popular American watch maker, announced its very first Android Wear-powered smartwatch that was made to brave the elements. If you've been waiting to get your hands wrists on one, the time is almost here. The Nixon Mission is now up for pre-order for $400.

The standard Nixon Mission is available in three color options – All Black, Concrete, and Orange/Gray/Black – for $400. If you aren't satisfied with any of those color options, you can customize your own watch for just $50 more. This will allow you to choose your own case, bezel and band colors, as well as personalize the back of the watch with a small picture or line of text. Honestly, if you're thinking about buying one of these watches, you should customize your own. The different colored band options look really awesome.

Nixon's website notes that the watches will be available on Monday, October 10, so you don't have that much longer to wait. Head on over to this link to place your pre-order.

Oh, and if you're looking for something a little classier, there are now a handful of new Michael Kors Android Wear watches available for purchase. They might not be as functional as the Nixon Mission, but the new Michael Kors watches are pretty dang classy.

Samsung Galaxy S8 may be coming sooner this year, reportedly dubbed SM-950 and 955

samsung galaxy s7 review aa (6 of 20)

The Note 7 might not be the latest hotness (bad pun, sorry) from Samsung much longer, at least if new reports of a faster release for the Samsung Galaxy S8 pan out.

Okay, so we all know the Galaxy Note 7 has been the talk of the virtual town for all the wrong reasons recently, whether at Android Authority, big news outlets, or even when talking to that annoying neighbor that sees you have a Samsung phone and asks if it is going to explode. Alright, last example might be unique to me.

Samsung is working hard to turn around a bad situation but there are some that suggest it's too late for the Note 7's reputation to rebound.  This might be somewhat true among the casual consumer types that might have considered the Note 7 (which arguably is a very small portion of the Note 7 owner population), but those who read sites like AA are probably more willing to give the Note 7 another chance once the battery fiasco is behind it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge-4See also: Samsung has a perception problem, and it's bigger than the Note 755

Still, there have been plenty of rumors suggesting Samsung will move up the timeframe for the Galaxy S8 in order to put the Note 7 drama behind it and get back in the news in a more positive light. A new report from the Korea Herald backs up this claim, quoting Kim Sang-pyo, an analyst for KB Investment & Securities.

In the middle of all this, insiders reporting to SamMobile have now revealed the new model numbers for the Galaxy S8: the SM-G950 and the SM-G955

"If Samsung's flagship smartphone launch is delayed to the end of the first quarter of next year, the profitability of the mobile business division could be worsened next year," states the analyst. This isn't the first year were we've heard rumors that the S line might come sooner than normal, but with the bad press from the Note 7 recall swirling, we wouldn't be too shocked to see the phone debut a month or two earlier than originally planned.

In the middle of all this, insiders reporting to SamMobile have now revealed the new model numbers for the Galaxy S8: the SM-G950 and the SM-G955. Reportedly one of the models will be smaller screen, the other larger – similar to the S7 and S7 Edge, though both phones might have Edge display this time around. Internally, they are reportedly going by the codenames Dream and Dream2.

While the existence of model number information doesn't exactly mean that the Galaxy S8 is coming any sooner, it does indicate that the talk inside of Samsung is likely already starting to shift towards what is next. For those wondering why the models jumped from SM-G930 to G950, four is considered unlucky in South Korea, and bad luck is something Samsung certainly wants to avoid right now.

What do you think, would it be wise for Samsung to get those recalled Note 7's out and then do whatever it can to get the S8 out to help patch things over? Or should the company take its time and simply focus on marketing and customer support to smooth over its current situation? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
