HTC Nexus ‘Sailfish’ exclusive: new renders & 360-degree video

With most companies having launched their flagships for the second half of the year, the stage is set for Google – working with HTC this year – to launch its new flagships. Although we're not sure exactly when the Sailfish will be unveiled for the world, today we have new renders and a 360-degree video – in partnership with Onleaks – which show off the Sailfish from every angle.

The new renders confirm what we've seen before but also reveal the Sailfish will sport a USB-C port rather than one of the microUSB variant, which is currently being phased out. Also not seen in previous leaks is the dual stereo speakers, which are both placed behind two rectangular holes flanking the USB-C port on the bottom of the handset.

Sailfish-Back-CleanSailfish-Bottom-Clean

We are also able to confirm the handset measures 143.8 mm x 69.5 mm x 7.3 mm at its thinnest point (the bottom) while it is 8.5 mm at the thickest point (the top). Although not shown in the renders, we can also confirm the headphone port is located along the top/left edge of the metal frame, when viewing the handset from the front, which quells some rumors that Google could be set to follow Apple's (and LeEco's) lead by dropping the headphone jack.

What else do we know about the HTC Nexus, codenamed 'Sailfish'? Thanks to previous leaks, we can expect a Full HD display (probably measuring around 5.2-5.3 inches), alongside the Snapdragon 820 processor (although it might be the Snapdragon 821) and 4GB of RAM.

Sailfish-Front-CleanSailfish-Side-Clean

We're also expecting 32GB internal storage, a 12MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera and a rear mounted fingerprint sensor (as seen in these renders). The whole package is likely to be powered by a 2770 mAh battery, while it will run Android Nougat out of the box. What could make the Sailfish stand out is the rumored metal and glass build and we're also hearing it's likely that Google will drop the Nexus naming convention for its latest (and future) devices.

What do you think of the new HTC Nexus Sailfish renders and what do you hope it brings? Or are you more interested in the bigger (and probably better) Nexus, codenamed Marlin? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Guess which country uses the most emoji every day? 🤔

Android N emoji 2

Ah, emoji – a blessing or a curse depending on how you feel about them. But whether your prefer the good old written language, still dig old school ;) emoticons, sprinkle a few emoji here and there like seasoning or converse entirely in Unicode hieroglyphics, emoji are here to stay. But some countries use them waaay more than others. Can you guess which nationality uses emoji the most every day?

Unicode 9 food emojiSee also: Stay calm and emoji: Bacon and the 71 other essential new emoji7

First up, let's start with the country that uses emoji the least. In a country with the largest population on earth, you might think that abbreviated pictograms would be popular, seeing as they're designed to help bridge language barriers and all. But despite having 22 official languages, 150 languages with sizeable populations and over 1600 mother tongues, emoji is not one of them in India.

In contrast to the nation with the highest percentage of daily emoji users at 71%, India is at the other end of the scale with just 29% of Indians using emoji on a daily basis. Why this is I have absolutely no idea. If you're thinking it might be the lack of smartphone penetration, with less than one-third of Indians owning a smartphone, keep in mind this data comes from 10,000 Facemoji keyboard users, who obviously need a smartphone in order to be counted.

Unicode 9 food emoji

As for the U.S., it splits the difference between the least emoji-fueled nation and the most emoji-obsessed with 48% of Americans using emoji on the daily. Again, why only half of U.S. emoji keyboard users actually use emoji each day is a little surprising. I mean, why install an emoji keyboard if you're not, you know, kinda obsessed with emoji? Whatever the case, I know you came here to find out who uses the most emoji of all.

The French. That's right, for reasons that may remain a mystery to all of us non-Francophones forever, our French brothers and sisters are the most emoji-hungry nation on earth with 71% of them using emoji every single day. I'm not sure if there are an inordinate amount of baguette, crepe, croissant and <insert offensive cultural stereotype here> emoji or not, but the French are clearly onto something. And that something is pictorial.

In case you're interested, Mexico, the Philippines and Brazil took spots 2-4 respectively, with 55%, 52% and 51% of their Facemoji keyboard users on the 😀 daily emoji tip. The U.S. was fifth with 48%, followed closely by the UK (47%) and Spain (46%).

How often do you use emoji in chats? Is your emoji usage increasing or declining?

You can now use the same app in both of Nougat’s split-screen windows

Parallel Windows for Nougat teaser

Android 7.0 Nougat is great. It has a bunch of back-end features custom built for the Android fanatics out there. But one of its major upfront features – split-screen mode – is arguably not as useful as it could be. Tablet usage is on the wane, split-screen usage on smartphones has never been huge for Samsung or LG and not all apps even support multi-window mode yet. But a new app has appeared that hopes to extend the functionality of split-screen mode in Nougat.

Android 7.0 Nougat logo AA 2See also: Android 7.0 Nougat factory images are live21

As you probably know by now, on devices with the Android 7.0 Nougat update, when you enter split-screen mode with Chrome in one of the windows, an option appears in the overflow menu called 'Move to other window'. This allows you to run two instances of Chrome in both multi-window panes. While that's great, Chrome is the only app that works in both windows at once. Until now, that is.

Parallel Windows for Nougat is a new app that takes that multi-window capability and grants it to any app. If you're a fan of split-screen then this could come in very handy. For example, when copying text from one email into a compose email page (remember Nougat also support copy and paste), chatting to two friends simultaneously in WhatsApp, watching two videos or comparing two pages in the same app. On Chrome OS it will be even cooler.

Parallel Windows for Nougat screens

You can also use Parallels in freeform windows mode – which is not an official part of Nougat – and manage a lot more than two windows. Parallel Windows for Nougat also provides an on-screen shortcut for launching split-screen mode via a floating menu that also provides access to a mini app drawer. The Mirror function lets you put the same app in both windows simultaneously.

The app is still in alpha release and the developer notes there are still some bugs and that apps may not behave properly in split-screen mode. Considering a lot of apps haven't been optimized for API 24 yet, this should come as no surprise. You'll get better performance from apps that do target Nougat, but you might still encounter some weirdness.

Either way, it's a free app and is definitely worth checking out if you're into the idea of multi-window on mobile. Of course, you'll need a device running Android 7.0 to take advantage of Parallel Windows for Nougat. While you're at it, why not check out Taskbar too, an app that enables Nougat's dormant freeform windows mode and gives it a start menu and app tray – making it a lot more useful than it was in my early tinkerings with it.

What do you think of split-screen mode? Will you use it?

Samsung now advising that you “power down your Note 7”

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 colors

The devil is in the details. Samsung has edited its Note 7 exchange page a few times in the last three days. And while this in itself might not seem like such a big deal, the edits the company has made make it look like the exploding Note 7 battery issue is getting worse rather than better.

samsung galaxy note 7 recall fire explosion (1)See also: Galaxy Note 7 recall: what you need to know379

To give you an idea of how bad it's getting, major aviation authorities and airlines from North America to Europe and Asia have issued statements against using the Galaxy Note 7 on flights or checking it in with your non-cabin baggage (for more details, hit the 'See also' link above).

In response, Samsung has promised to expedite delivery of replacement Note 7's but the edits on the exchange page make it sound like this might take a little longer than originally planned.

Galaxy Note7 Exchange Program strongly advise

Using The Wayback Machine, a tool that lets you visit web pages in various historical versions, I took a look at what Samsung has been changing. Firstly, the phrase "strongly advise" has been added to both mentions of returning your Note 7, where previously it simply announced the exchange program and said it was available for customers.

Samsung now advises that you power down your Note 7 and exchange it now.

Furthermore – and perhaps most tellingly – Samsung has added a bit of urgency to its strong advice. Where the page previously said "we are launching an exchange program for all Galaxy Note 7 owners" it now says "we are advising that you power down your Note 7 and exchange it now" (emphasis added).

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall page before and after

Before (top) and after versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall page.

Despite the explosions only occurring (as far as we know) when the Note 7 was being charged, Samsung doesn't even want you turning on your Note 7 now. To say that this is a worry is an understatement, especially when a lot of folks continue to use their Note 7 while they wait for replacement phones to be available.

No matter what happens in future, the Note 7 will always be "the exploding phone".

Samsung may just be protecting themselves; by saying to turn your phone off and return it immediately they have at least some protection if you choose not to do so and are injured. But when the company advises you to not even turn the thing on, when there has been no indication of spontaneous combustion with a power source attached – that's bad. No matter what happens in future, the Note 7 will always be "the exploding phone".

The offer of a replacement Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge while you await your "safe" Note 7 has also been replaced with an offer for a replacement Galaxy J series device instead. You can still swap your Note 7 for a S7 or S7 Edge and get the difference reimbursed, but if you're taking the temporary loaner approach you'll be stuck with a J series phone instead.

Finally, Samsung has added "pending CPSC approval" in parentheses in the sentence about receiving your new Note 7. Previously it said "as early as this week", indicating that there is now federal oversight over the new Note 7's being produced and that the expedited replacement process might not happen as quickly as Samsung initially planned.

Galaxy Note7 Exchange Program conditions

It goes without saying that this fiasco is going to cost Samsung badly. Not just the billion-dollar price tag being placed on the recall and replacement process either, but also in terms of PR. With the LG V20 and iPhone 7 recently announced, Samsung has pretty effectively taken itself out of the end-of-year race. What's worse though is the lack of faith the company will sustain as a result of all this.

Has this shaken your trust in Samsung? How do you feel about the way they've handled the recall?

Action Launcher 3 update adds new Nexus Launcher features

Action Launcher 3 Nexus Launcher features

Chris Lacy has released the September update for Action Launcher 3 that officially adds all the Nexus Launcher features we covered in beta form a month ago. But Lacy has also tried to improve on those features, so, for example, instead of the single screen-width widget the Nexus Launcher offers, AL3 lets you choose the Google pill, the date widget or both combined, so you can put them anywhere you like in whichever order you prefer or only use one of them (or none).

Nexus Launcher wallpaper pickerSee also: Fix the Nexus Launcher force close bug with this wallpaper app22

Lacy has added the slide-up app drawer and caret (little arrow) above the semi-transparent dock. You can customize the background color of the dock or make it transparent to reflect the color of your wallpaper (via Quicktheme, part of AL3 Plus, a $4.99 upgrade). There's also new Nexus Launcher-inspired folder designs and the ability to change the default wallpaper picker app.

You can still use AL3's covers and shutters in the dock, but obviously a swipe up gesture will launch the app drawer instead, so you'll have to reverse your cover/shutter swipe direction.

QuickTheme and QuickPage work fine with the Nexus Launcher features, but the only way you'll get Google Now integration in AL3 is if you install the launcher as a system app. Lacy is still working on a fix for this but until Google releases the Now API for third-party developers, workarounds is what we're stuck with.

Before you install though, do note that you need to own AL3 Plus ($4.99) to enable the Nougat-style features.
