Amazon’s Fire HD 8 tablet gets spec bump, Alexa, and a $90 price tag

new-kindle-fire-8

If it's a cheap tablet you're after, then Amazon has a deal it'd love to sell you with the latest iteration of the Fire HD 8.

The signature feature for the new tablet is Alexa, the star of the Amazon Echo line that serves as an always-listening digital assistant.  Instead of just answering questions, however, Alexa will serve as an integral part of how you use the tablet with commands for launching apps, playing music, games, audiobooks, or answering topical queries like the weather and news.

The initiative is similar to how Siri and Google perform such actions on iOS and Android. Amazon is also bringing the invisible genius to existing Fire tablets, so there's no need to upgrade just to get it.

But if you're after a new tablet, you can't argue much with the price. The 16GB version starts at $90, with a price bump to $120 for 32GB. Both of those price points include Amazon's infamous Special Offers, which are ads that live on your lock screen. If you want to permanently nix those, you'll pay $105 and $135, respectively. If the storage options aren't enough, you can add in an SD card for up to 200 additional GB of space.

On the spec front, The Fire HD 8 offers a quad-core 1.3 GHz processor with 1.5MB of RAM, a 4,750 mAh battery that promises up to 12 hours of battery life, and a 1280×800 resolution screen that's 189 ppi. These internals are certainly on the modest end, but keep in mind the baseline option is less than $100. The tablet is powered by Fire OS 5, which is based off the Android Open Source Project. Amazon has built in some Fire-specific features like Second Screen, X-Ray, and ASAP to distinguish its own operating system. Apps are available through the Amazon Appstore.

It's up for preorder on Amazon, with a launch date of September 21.

Google soon to launch a system in the US that steers extremists away from ISIS

Mandatory Credit: Photo by REX USA (2642870a) Hayat Boumeddiene, far right Hayat Boumeddiene 'appears in Islamic State film' - 06 Feb 2015 The latest video released by French-speaking Islamic state (ISIS), fighters may be Hayat Boumeddiene, who is believed to have knowledge about the deadly January 9, 2015 attack on a Paris kosher grocery,The video, titled "Blow Up France 2," was released Tuesday and shows an ISIS fighter praising previous attackers in France and calling for new attacks. The video shows a woman standing next to the speaker, wearing camouflage clothing and holding a weapon. French authorities are investigating the possibility this woman could be Hayat Boumeddiene. Her husband, Amedy Coulibaly, killed four hostages January 9 at a kosher grocery in Paris, authorities said. He was killed by police in a rescue and the remaining hostages fled to safety.

You may not agree with their message, and Google certainly hopes you don't, but ISIS and its followers have proven to be much more tech-savvy than other terrorist groups. They have managed to indoctrinate hordes of new recruits via social media, and Google has been working on countering them. It's called Redirect Method, and Google is now preparing to release its solution in North America.

Redirect Method, created by Alphabet subsidiary Jigsaw, looks for keywords users commonly search for when they're looking to learn more about ISIS and other terrorist groups. Along with delivering their search results, Redirect Method presents potential recruits with 'counter programming' in the form of YouTube channels and videos meant to steer people away from extremism.

During an eight-week pilot, Redirect Method search over 1,700 keywords and targeted about 320,000 believed to be at imminent risk of ISIS indoctrination. Those individuals were shown ads that sought to refute the terrorist group's propaganda, including personal accounts from YouTubers who managed to escape ISIS-claimed territory.

It isn't just for combating ISIS' propaganda. As the program heads to the States, Jigsaw also hopes Redirect Method will help steer potential recruits away from domestic terror groups. Although this may strike some as eerily close to thought policing or social engineering, Jigsaw says they aren't trying to forcibly guide people's thoughts per se. Jigsaw's Yasmin Green, head of research and development, said that "the branding philosophy for the entire pilot project was not to appear judgmental or be moralistic, but really to pique interest of individuals who have questions, questions that are being raised and answered by the Islamic State."

Essentially, Jigsaw is arguing that people researching some topics surrounding terrorism may only encounter one side of the issue, thanks to aggressive social media initiatives on the part of ISIS. With Redirect Method, those curious about ISIS and other terror groups will be exposed to a more complex narrative than search results may have previously yielded.

What do you think of Redirect Method? Is this thought control or a necessary means to combat a techno-savvy force of violence? Let us know your take in the comments below!

Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem won’t come ‘til 2017

Nintendo Animal Crossing

The announcement of Super Mario Run coming to the iPhone (and later to Android) made a lot of Nintendo diehards practically giddy, but now we're hearing some less thrilling news. Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem are getting pushed back to 2017.

These two games made a stir enough of their own when they were previously announced, as both Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem are fairly popular franchises. Like Super Mario Run, they will be complete games with a set price.

Nintendo says the reason for this delay is because the gaming giant decided that it would be more appropriate for Super Mario Run to launch ahead of Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem. The plumber-themed endless runner is slated for a holiday release this year.

"Our Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem titles for mobile will launch before the end of our fiscal year," said Nintendo in a statement to Polygon. Since Nintendo's fiscal year ends on March 31, we can probably expect to see these two games arrive earlier that month.

What are your thoughts regarding Nintendo's decision to push back these two anticipated titles to make way for their star character? Sound off in the comments below!

Samsung working with T-Mobile to create blazing 5G demos

samsung logo mwc 2015 8

Samsung has just announced that they will be collaborating with T-Mobile in the US. The two mobile entities are working on a set of lab tests and demonstration that will be used to showcase and build upon 5G network technology.

Samsung hopes to begin initial testing as early as later this year. They will be using outdoor installations to test T-Mobile's use of 28GHz (mmWave) spectrum with prototype 5G technology, and in Q1 2017, they plan on expanding this testing dramatically using pre-commercial devices.

This comes on the heels of T-Mobile bashing Verizon's boosted coverage and claiming that their own double-quick LTE network boost is in the works. T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray, who commented that Verizon's tech was "so 2014," says, "We are excited to work with Samsung to see how we can bring to life key attributes of emerging 5G technology, including extreme speed, low latency and massive connectivity. Our collaboration with Samsung's networks technology will enable us to enhance 5G development and availability."

Samsung is looking to position themselves in a leading role during the development of 5G technology. The efficacy of this network will be essential to the future of the IoT as well as managing rapidly increasing data demands from mobile devices.

The Korean tech titan says we can expect to see commercial 5G capabilities come 2018.

This guy says his Note 7 destroyed his Jeep

galaxy note 7 blows up jeep

Samsung's massive recall of the Galaxy Note 7 has been making headlines all week, but so far we haven't seen anything quite this dramatic. A Florida man says that his Note 7 ignited while charging in the center console of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, and that the vehicle was thoroughly destroyed in the ensuing fire.

Nathan Dornacher had only had his new smartphone for four days. He says he was unaware of the recall.

Fortunately, nobody was in the vehicle when the device allegedly exploded. Dornacher, his wife, their 8-year-old daughter, and the family dog had driven to a Labor Day yard sale on Monday morning. The smartphone in question was left on the charger while Dornacher and his wife unloaded a desk from the back of the vehicle. After spending a few minutes inside the house, Dornacher told his daughter to head back to the Jeep… only to look out the window and see that it was engulfed in flames.

Although insurance is paying for the totaled vehicle, Dornacher says he's still out thousands of dollars for modifications he made to the Jeep.

Previously an iPhone fan, Dornacher swapped to Samsung once he first became aware of the Note line. He says he's traded in for a new Note annually for the past several years, but after this incident, he doesn't want another Samsung product in his house ever again.

Samsung has released the following statement in regards to the incident:

We are aware of the incident and we are working with Mr. Dornacher to investigate his case and ensure we do everything we can for him. Consumer safety is Samsung's highest priority. With regard to the Galaxy Note 7, we are asking owners to take advantage of the Product Exchange Program announced on Friday of last week. The program offers Note 7 owners the opportunity to exchange the phone for a new one. More details on the program can be found at http://ift.tt/2cmlIei.

It's still not confirmed whether the new smartphone was truly at the epicenter of this vehicular catastrophe, but it's definitely giving more than a few Note 7 owners some pause. But what are your thoughts? Give us your take on the situation in the comments below!

Refurbished phones: what you need to know

moto z vs lg g5 aa (4 of 13)

If you've ever looked at a phone and thought that's just too expensive, you're most definitely not the only one. Buying new phones is certainly an investment, especially when it comes to flagship devices. This another option however: buying refurbished.

Refurbished phones are almost always significantly cheaper than brand new versions of the same phones in question. If you can find one that meets your specifications and works with the carrier of your choice, that is. Unfortunately, confusion in the market – like where to buy these phones, what different labels mean, and whether or not to trust a refurbished phone's authenticity – have made them less popular than one would think.

So let's break down that confusion, shall we?

Who refurbishes these phones?

lg v20 drop test 15

This poor LG V20 is in need of some OEM refurbishing love!

Not all refurbished phones are necessarily created equal. There are several things to consider when purchasing a refurbished device. One question you'll likely find yourself asking is who refurbishes these phones? And the answer is not always simple.

Who refurbishes a phone is typically contingent on who is selling this refurbished phone. Factory-refurbished devices are sent back to the manufacturer of the phone for testing and restoration, restoring these devices to the same level you should expect out of the box with a brand-new device. These phones come sometimes from unsatisfied customers returning their newly-purchased handsets with absolutely nothing wrong, and other times are from insurance companies after a customer makes a claim for, for example, a cracked screen. Often times, manufacturers will call these devices "certified refurbished" and offer limited warranties against product failure for them as well.

Another kind of refurbished device that's fairly popular is one that has been refurbished by some entity that isn't the original manufacturer of the device. These are typically cheaper, but come with the downsides of oftentimes not carrying warranties and not having the peace of mind that manufacturer certification gives. Though it's true that these devices often work just as well as manufacturer-refurbished counterparts, it's worth being more skeptical of companies like these – long story short, do your research and make sure you're going down a trusted path.

A final classification you'll find is pre-owned. Pre-owned devices are typically second-hand products that have had no modifications made to them following the last user's use of the phone. Buying pre-owned can get you phones in any one of a number of conditions, so be careful that you know you're purchasing a pre-owned product in a condition you are okay with. Also be very cautious about the source of pre-owned devices; many phones on the pre-owned market will be stolen or otherwise tampered with, so make sure you're buying from a reputable retailer.

So where should you buy refurbished devices?

samsung refurbished pre-owned store

If you have a phone in mind, one good place to check is always the manufacturer; many manufacturers offer refurbished device programs of their own, and you're almost always going to receive a like-new device with a good warranty if you buy directly from the OEM. A prime example of this is Samsung, a company that recently started offering refurbished devices directly in the United States.

You can also sometimes find manufacturer refurbs at carriers or retail stores. A pro-tip is that you will typically find more options online than in retail stores, though both are worth a shot.

Over the last several years, several online retailers have also rose in popularity offering pre-owned and/or refurbished devices for sale. eBay comes to mind as a classic option, and so do smaller options like Swappa and Gazelle. Again, be sure that wherever you're buying from is a reputable option – that means that Craigslist may not quite be the best option for your next phone purchase.

Here's just a few well-known and trust retailers that offer a pretty extensive selection of refurbished devices, to help you out:

Conclusion

The upshot is that buying refurbished will save you a lot of dough in most cases, and if you're buying from the right places your phone won't be any different than a new device either. Doing your homework before your next purchase can land you a deal that may be too difficult to refuse – but do keep in mind that it's a wild west out there in the land of pre-owned and refurbished phones. Make sure to keep all the considerations in this piece in mind in order to make an informed purchase.

Do you think your next phone will be pre-owned or refurbished? Sound off in the comments!
