New Omate Rise smartwatch comes with Amazon Alexa

There's a plethora of Android Wear smartwatches out there, but very few manufacturers will venture into the world of standalone wearables. Omate smartwatches are special in that they run the full Android OS. They took the Omate Rise to Indiegogo, where they have been pretty successful in the past. And the strategy certainly works for then, as the funding goal was met in a mere 15 minutes.

What's next? They are activating their Indiegogo page once again to offer a special edition Omate Rise with support for Amazon's Alexa, the popular retailer's voice assistant. But those who want to benefit from Alexa will need to act quickly. Omate is only making 1,000 units, and three will be given away through Facebook (more details on Indiegogo).

Other Omate content:

If you haven't heard of the Omate Rise, it offers a true standalone experience, thanks to 3G support. It is powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop, a 1.3-inch 360 x 360 display, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage and a 580 mAh battery. And because it does run full Android, it can handle anything an actual smartphone does… albeit in a smaller form factor.

Interested? You can sign up for an Omate Rise with Amazon Alexa for as low as $199. This is not a bad deal considering the actual retail price will be set at $349 once the device is launched. But as we said, you gotta act fast! There's only 1,000 of these!

Chrome Dev debuts page saver, download manager

Google Chrome Dev AA

A download manager and page saver feature have arrived on Chrome for the Android app's latest developer build. The update comes on the heels of the release of a feature-packed Chrome 53.

The download manager in Chrome Dev is set up pretty much like the one in the desktop version of Chrome. You can access it by the navigation bar's Overflow button, which is denoted by its three-dot column.

Inside of the download manager, you can monitor and moderate downloads. You can also view current and completed downloads by category by tapping on the Download menu's hamburger button.

Download categories include Audio, Video, Images, Documents, Other and Pages.

On the subject of Pages, the latest version of Chrome Dev lets you save them for offline access. That means that even if you're up in the air, down in a basement, inside a tunnel, or out of tower range, you can still access your favorite webpages on Chrome.

There's a big catch to this feature, however, because the Save Page feature only lets you save one page at a time. You'll have to do a little bit of manual labor if you'd like to peruse web pages offline.

While some logical additions to Chrome for Android are being test driven in Chrome Dev, Chrome 53 was recently released with a batch of updates that may interest developers much more than end users.

Chrome 53 is out now for desktop platforms and is expected to see an Android release next month. While we wait for all these features to be finalized, give Chrome Dev's new download management capabilities a spin by clicking the button below. Head back to the comments section to let us know what you think of the new interface!

JBL speakers get Google Now voice integration

jbl-flip-3

JBL has made quite a name for itself in the speaker business. Now, via an announcement at IFA, their Xtreme, Pulse 2, Charge 3, and Flip 3 speakers are all getting Google Now and Siri voice integration, allowing you to use these portable music makers as personal assistants.

Music lovers can activate the voice assistant features by simply pressing the 'Multifunction Button' (the speaker's Play/Pause button turns into a voice activation button) on their JBL portable device. By activating Siri or Google Now's push-to-talk, users have the convenience to change the song, make a call or check the weather report – all by speaking to JBL.

JBL says that they're looking at making this feature standard on their portable speakers going forward. From here on out, if you purchase one of their new products, you'll be able to request songs and control your speaker using only your voice. They will also be launching a JBL CONNECT app, which should become available later this month.

This is part and parcel with the direction Google expects technology to take in general. They believe the future of our engagement with our devices will be intrinsically conversational, so we can probably expect to see more and more of our gadgets gaining sophisticated voice control integration.redditors google

Verizon Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge gain FM Radio, voice improvements in update

Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Edge-photos-22

If you're on Verizon and you're the proud owner of one of this year's Galaxy S7 flagship offerings from Samsung, then an update is currently rolling out to your device that improves a variety of features and even unlocks FM Radio capabilities.

Most modern devices are shipped with FM Radio hardware built right in, but manufacturers and carriers disable them for a variety of reasons. However, now you can jam to your favorite local channels on your S7. Just head over to Settings > System updates.

The update also allegedly improves voice calls and prevents "unintentional powering off and restarting." Barcode Beaming for UPC codes is now available as well, which lets you scan common barcodes in a way that interfaces neatly with Samsung Pay.

Of course, this update isn't without its downsides. As part of the FM Radio unlocking, Verizon is also using DT Ignite to install an app called "NextRadio" on your device, which many users are regarding as bloatware. Your milage may vary.

What do you think of Verizon's new update to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge? A worthy improvement or are they just adding unasked-for features to squeeze bloatware onto devices? Let us know your opinion in the comments below!

Huawei means to trump Apple and Samsung in smartphones sales in the coming years

huawei-logo-mwc-2015-4

It's no secret that Huawei has been doing well for itself. Its latest financial report showed a staggering 40% growth in smartphone revenue. Mind you, this is in a time when most phone makers are struggling to make a dent in an increasingly demanding market. That kind of success sometimes springs some audacious confidence, and that seems the case in a chat between the Wall Street Journal and the China-based manufacturer at IFA 2016.

In the interview, Huawei's consumer business group CEO, Richard Yu, recalled the company's current placement as the third largest smartphone manufacturer – having 8.9% of the market in Q2 – but suggested that that's not quite good enough. It has its determined sights to overtake Apple and Samsung for the top spot (and probably world domination after that). Mr. Yu is still adamant in his previous claim of becoming the largest smartphone manufacturer in 'four or five years' time. Huawei is taking the challenge very seriously, "This year and next will be critical for the success, we are working very hard."

Its strategy has certainly been apparent as of late; the relevance of the Honor brand in the US is at a steady climb. The Honor 5X was a super competitive offering, and the newly launched Honor 8 is also a force to be reckoned with. Still, Mr. Yu admits that the company should have approached the US market with more force in the past, saying 'our management in the U.S. was too weak in the past, so we changed it.' Huawei is still far from a household name stateside, and the company understands that it will take time to break through.

The manufacturer's IFA 2016 announcement just kicked off this morning, where two new solid mid-rangers were introduced. Be sure to check out our coverage of the Huawei Nova and Nova Plus smartphones!

What do you think about Huawei's ambitious goal to be #1? Is it too far-fetched or do you think it's making the right progress? Would you switch to a Huawei phone or prefer to stick with more established names? Let us your thoughts in the comments!

Alcatel Vision is an all-in-one VR headset, but is it really worth getting?

alcatel-vision-vr

Complete, all-in-one VR. Sounds great doesn't it? No need to attach a phone, PC, or a game system. Instead you can enjoy complete mobility. This a dream concept that we've seen a few players attempt to go after, including Pico with their mobile VR-based Neo series and Solun Q with its AMD-powered all-in-one approach. Now Alcatel is throwing its weight into the all-in-one VR ring as well.

At IFA 2016, Alcatel announced the Vision, a VR headset with all the required internals built right in. That means no need to tether anything. Powering this experience is an octa-core CPU with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, Bluetooth, LTE Wi-Fi, accelerometer gyroscope, and a proximity sensor. On the display front, you get two 3.8-inch AMOLED screens with a resolutions of 1080 x 1020.

While we applaud Alcatel for thinking outside the box, this is a concept that unfortunately sounds cool until you really analyze it. First, Alcatel just mentions octa-core CPU and so it's unclear if we are looking at a low-end chip, or a high-end. Taking a guess, it's probably a higher-end Mediatek processor. So you have essentially mid-to-high-end mobile specs, but without the phone. And that leads to another potential issue: pricing.

gear-vr-2016

Is putting a phone into a headset really that big of a deal?

The Alcatel Vision is expected to cost around 499 to 599 euros, or what amounts to between $560 and $670. So you're paying about the price of an Oculus Rift, but without the need to have a PC attached. That said, there's going to be a big difference in performance between the Rift and the Vision.

Consider that Samsung's Gear VR and the upcoming Google Daydream platform both will cost around $100 or less. Yes, these headsets need a phone to work, but pretty much everyone owns a smartphone these days. And judging by the specs in the Vision, something like the ZTE Axon 7 (which supports Daydream, btw) would cost the same when combining with a VR headset and would deliver the same or a better experience. And when you aren't doing VR, you'd also have a pretty solid phone you can use.

Finally, we have to think about software. The Gear VR has the Oculus Store. Daydream has the upcoming Android Daydream UI with its own version of Google Play and YouTube. Even Cardboard has a decent library of games via the Play Store. On the other hand, unless the Vision has the Play Store built in (they don't say for sure), Alcatel's solution will only allow you to use their own storefront which is expected to have around 50 games and 100 VR videos at launch. While that's a nice start, it pales in comparison to what you'll get with other mobile VR platforms.

I've actually been pretty supportive of Solun Q in the past for its all-in-one concept. The difference is it aims to run PC VR games, albeit at a likely weaker resolution than Rift or Vive, giving true mobility to a category that previous required a desktop or expensive laptop to run, and a huge wire to make the connection. With mobile VR, connecting the phone is pretty easy, and this solution is already pretty mobile. This makes the need for something like this a bit less necessary.

What do you think, agree with my assessment or am I being a bit too harsh on the concept? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Google swings wide the gates of its Early Access program

Google-logo-aa16x9

Previously, Google's Early Access program has been pretty heavily restricted. It was originally only available to 29 launch partners, but as time went on, Google slowly began allowing a handful of additional developers into the fold. Now essentially anyone can apply to let users beta test their developing apps by filling out a simple form.

The form is pretty straightforward and can be found here. Google says that in order to be eligible, the apps being proposed must be running in open beta and fit a number of other standards. This is an excellent opportunity for developers, especially considering how diverse the Android ecosystem is continuing to become.

Google I-O 2016 Keynote-2See also: Google IO 2016 keynote video now available – watch it here1

It's difficult to develop stable apps for such a wide array of products. Although it can be helpful to try out your work in progress on the devices you have on hand, emulators, and your friends' devices, you'll never get the full benefit that comes from mass usage and public feedback. That means that your app launch could fail in a variety of unforeseeable ways.

Opening up the Early Access program will help developers across the board bring their users a better experience when they launch their apps in their mature form. A relatively recent program, we first saw Early Access go live back at Google IO in June, and already more than a million apps under its umbrella have been downloaded and tried out by users.

What are your thoughts regarding Google widening developer access to the Early Access program? Are you a developer who will be giving the application form a whirl? Let us know in the comments below!
