At a press conference held in New Delhi today, Kodak, which is known more for its cameras than its other imaging products, launched five models, including three Smart and two regular TVs. The Smart TVs, manufactured by Kodak's licensed partner Super Plastronics, come in 32-inch, 40-inch, and 53-inch screen sizes, with both the 40 FHDXSMART and 50FHDXSMART featuring a 300 Nits Samsung panel, while the 32 HDXSMART has a 250 Nits Samsung panel. The LED panels come with wide viewing angles and features such as progressive scan, yPbPr color space, and a response time of less than 8 milliseconds.

Lenovo teases IFA 2016 lineup including new Moto 360, Moto Mods and more

Motorola Moto 360 2016

As always, Lenovo likes to tease its IFA lineup before Europe's largest technology fair kicks off in September. In a new teaser on Lenovo's YouTube channel, we get told to watch out for a new Moto 360, Moto Mods, and other funky stuff like folding smartphones, transformer hybrids and fancy new tablet thingies with keyboards.

Project Tango Lenovo logo2See also: 10 interesting facts about Lenovo24

Besides the tantalizing product glimpses in the video below, Lenovo promises everything from "a new chapter in tablets to new Moto Mods, and devices that blur the lines of creativity and productivity to a whole new kind of intuitive keyboard." While we won't be seeing any commercial products including folding and bendy mobile tech, we will at least get to see them in the flesh again.

Rather, the most interesting things to expect from Lenovo and Motorola at IFA 2016 will be the Moto 360 (3rd generation) smartwatch, whatever new Moto Mods Lenovo has cooked up (hopefully including that camera grip we saw leaked a while ago), and that funky new tablet/slate thing with the fancy new keyboard, which looks to be running Windows.

Lenovo's press event goes down on August 31, so stay tuned for more as it happens.

What do you want to se most from Lenovo at IFA? Which OEM do you think will steal the show?

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-7-hands-on-first-batch-AA-(7-of-47)

Samsung's latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, was launched in India at a press event in Delhi earlier today. While we were expecting a couple of mid-range and entry-level smartphones to accompany it, Samsung instead introduced a slew of accessories to complement their latest Galaxy Note, with devices including the the new Gear VR headset, Gear IconX wireless earbud, and Gear Fit 2 fitness tracker.

The Galaxy Note 7 is the first of the series to feature a dual-edge curved design and IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and the first Samsung device that comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 panel to keep the display protected, a USB Type-C charging port, and an iris scanner.

As far as differences between the Indian version and US variant go, the former is powered by the Samsung Exynos 8890 processor, while the latter comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. The Indian version also features dual-SIM capabilities, but comes with a hybrid slot, which means that the second SIM slot doubles as a microSD card slot, which leaves users with the choice between expandable storage or dual-SIM.

Samsung also introduced the Gear VR headset, which gets a slight change in design, along with a wider 101 degrees field of view, and a USB Type-C port as well as micro USB port to make it compatible with other Galaxy devices.

Then there is the Samsung Gear IconX fitness earbuds, which don't have any wires between themselves and can be connected to your smartphone without any wires as well. With the Gear IconX, you get 3.5GB of built-in storage, two microphones, and sensors for tracking steps, heart rate, and calories burned. You also get a sleek carry case that doubles up as a charger for the earbuds.

Finally, there is the Gear Fit 2, which comes with an updated design, built-in GPS, and the ability to recognize all your activities and then sync that data with Samsung's S Health app.

Not surprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 commands a premium price tag, and buyers will have to shell out Rs 59,900 (~$898) for the device. If you pre-order the phone, you do get some special offers, including the Reliance Jio Preview, which offers free voice and data for 90 days, as well as access Reliance Jio content services.

Samsung is further sweetening by offering the new Gear VR at a special price of Rs 1,990 (~$30) during the pre-order period, with the headset otherwise priced at Rs 7,290 (~$110). The Gear Fit 2 and IconX wireless earbuds will sell for Rs 13,990 (~$210) and Rs 13,490 (~$203), respectively.

Google researching super-fast wireless and 5G internet in the US

GoogleFiberTruck

Google Fiber is a great option for those looking for ultra-fast broadband, but the service currently only covers a small number of locations, it isn't growing particularly quickly, and it doesn't help when you're on the go. Google's wireless Project Fi, which switches between 3G, 4G, and WiFi connections, is perhaps a more feasible idea to boost consumer data speeds across such a vast country. It appears that the company is planning to expand this idea and is preparing for the arrival of 5G as well.

Lately, Google has been testing out experimental wireless transmissions in the 3.5GHz band in Kansas City, which sits not too far away from the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands used by WiFi routers. Impressively, the company claims to have surpassed 1Gbps wireless data speeds during its tests, which matches part of the criteria for a 5G network. A recent filing with the FCC reveals that the company is now looking to expand use of its "experimental transmitters" to 24 new US locations, including Utah, Omaha, Nebraska, and Boulder Colorado. Unfortunately for us, this testing is all going to be done internally, for now.

"We are working to test the viability of a wireless network that relies on newly available spectrum … The project is in early stages today, but we hope this technology can one day help deliver more abundant Internet access to consumers." – Google spokesperson

In addition, Google is now advertising a position for a wireless systems engineer, who's role will be to investigate mobile wireless technologies for tomorrows markets. The company will be looking at current 4G LTE solutions and the "next generation 5G system."

Google's current experimentation in the 3.5GHz band is much lower in frequency than the spectrum being proposed for use with 5G networks. The FCC recently agreed to open up unlicensed bandwidth between the 64GHz and 71GHz bands for future 5G applications. Even so, aggregating short range WiFi networks with longer range 4G LTE is following a similar path to proposed 5G networks, which should be able to combine both licensed and unlicensed spectra. Project Fi backed by 4G LTE, future short range 5G bands, and fiber optic WiFi certainly sounds promising, if that's indeed what Google is planning for.

Of course none of this guarantees that Google will deploy a 5G network of its own in the future, but the company is conducting research right in the heart of this emerging field.
