Best Chinese Android phones (August 2016)

In 2015, 7 of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers in the world were Chinese OEMs, and apart from their popularity in China, companies like Lenovo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei, and others have been making in-roads into competitive markets like the US, Europe, and India. We've covered these companies and their popular offerings extensively here at Android Authority, and you can check them out in the links below.

However, China is home to a slew of other great smartphone manufacturers as well, that, while quite popular in their home market, aren't as well-known internationally. That's certainly not because of the lack of a good product, with devices that offer everything you'd expect from a flagship smartphone, including solid specifications and features, all at a very affordable price point. The phones listed above definitely qualify as some of the best Chinese Android smartphones, but for this roundup, we attempt to showcase some of these lesser-known OEMs and their devices. Let's take a look!

Editor's note – We will be updating this list as more devices hit the market.
Update, August 2016: This month we removed the Nubia Z9, Elephone P9000 and Lenovo VIBE P1 Turbo to make room for the OnePlus 3, Huawei P9, Xiaomi Mi 5 and Huawei Mate 8.

OnePlus 3

OnePlus did a great job at hyping up its 2015 flagship, the OnePlus 2. After missing the mark in a few key areas like camera and software performance, though, it was very clear the company still had a lot of work to do.

Fast forward to 2016 and we now have the OnePlus 3. Not only does it fix many of the issues we had with the 2, it also brings some new software and camera features to the table that are definitely worth checking out.

With the OnePlus 3 you get a thin, all-metal unibody design, a Snapdragon 820 processor, a massive 6GB of RAM and a perfectly capable 16MP rear camera. The battery is a little smaller this time around, but it does come with Dash Charging technology that will be able to get you a 60% charge in just 30 minutes. Oh, it has NFC too!

The best part? You can buy it right now for just $399 without and invite. That's right – OnePlus has finally done away with the dreaded invite system for good.

Specs

  • 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 401ppi
  • 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 64GB of on-board storage, no microSD expansion
  • 16MP rear camera, 8MP front camera

Huawei P9

Huawei's new P9 flagship certainly ticks a lot of the right boxes. It has a fast processor, plenty of on-board storage, a big battery, and it's very thin. It also runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Huawei's EMUI 4.1 software overlay.

Huawei has also partnered with Leica, the German camera maker, to bring a solid camera experience to the P9. It has a 12MP dual lens camera setup on the rear, complete with an f/2.2 aperture and uses 1.25-micron Sony IMX286 sensors. Seriously, you won't be disappointed with the camera experience on the P9. As noted by our own Gary Sims, the Huawei P9 is a great smartphone for camera enthusiasts and a good device for smartphone enthusiasts. It's not a complete overhaul from the company's P8 flagship from last year, but it is a huge step up.

Specs

  • 5.2-inch IPS-NEO LCD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 423ppi
  • 2.5GHz octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 955 processor
  • 3/4GB of RAM
  • 32/64GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 128GB
  • Dual 12MP rear cameras, 8MP front camera
  • Non-removable 3000mAh battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Xiaomi Mi 5

The Xiaomi Mi 5 launched back in February 2015 with killer specs, a beautiful design and a cheap price tag. Although its lack of U.S. availability and 4G LTE support are a major hurdle, there's certainly a lot to love about the Mi 5.

It has Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 820 processor, plenty of RAM and on-board storage, as well as a great 16MP camera and all-day battery life. And compared to many similarly spec'd smartphones on the market, it's quite inexpensive, too.

Specs

  • 5.15-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 428ppi
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor
  • 3/4GB of RAM
  • 32/64/128GB of on-board storage, no microSD card expansion

Huawei Mate 8

Huawei recently unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Mate 8. Featuring an extremely premium build, market-leading performance and great battery life, this is one heck of an Android device. Huawei still has yet to make the Mate 8 available in the United States, but that caveat is easily bypassed when buying the device from Amazon or any other online retailer. Luckily Huawei decided to include just about every band needed to connect to U.S. carriers' networks, so if you do choose to import, you likely won't have many problems on the connectivity front.

All in all, the Mate 8 is one of the better Android devices we've used in recent memory. It has a big 6.0-inch display, fast Kirin 950 processor, plenty of on-board storage and a decent camera. It's also running the latest version of Android, which is a nice touch. Huawei's software overlay may not be the most appealing to folks in the U.S., but that's really one of the only downsides we have with the device.

Specs

  • 6.0-inch IPS-NEO LCD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 368 ppi
  • 2.3 GHz octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 950 processor
  • 3/4GB of RAM
  • 32/64 GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 128 GB (uses SIM 2 slot)
  • 16 MP rear camera, 8 MP front camera
  • Non-removable 4000 mAh battery

Meizu Pro 6

Meizu Pro 6

Meizu may not be as well-known as some of its Chinese counterparts, but the company offers some fantastic smartphones, particularly in the ultra budget-friendly segment. That said, Meizu is making waves with their high-end offerings as well, and only a few months after the release of the Pro 5, comes the company's latest flagship smartphone, the Meizu Pro 6. The Pro 6 retains the beautiful full metal unibody construction of its predecessor.

It comes with some useful features and hardware, including its own take on Apple's 3D Touch and Huawei's Force Touch, called 3D Press, which uses additional force to pull up previews, extra menus, and other hotkey functions. It also comes with a Cirrus Logic CS43L36 audio chip for Hi-Fi audio. The Pro 6 is also the first smartphone to be powered by the deca-core MediaTek Helio X25 processor, and backing it is the Mali-T880MP4 GPU and 4 GB of RAM. Other high-end features include a fingerprint scanner up front, a USB Type-C port (USB 3.1) and mCharge 3.0 fast charging capabilities, and a 21 MP rear camera.

The Meizu Pro 6 is the complete package, with specifications and features to give any current generation flagship a run for its money, but where it has its high-end competition beat is when it comes to price, with the 32 GB model retailing for ¥2,499 (~$390) and the 64 GB variant priced at ¥2,799 (~$430). Granted, the price will be slightly higher if you're looking to import the device, but it'll still be much cheaper the most of its competitors. You can find out more about the Meizu Pro 6 here.

Specs

  • 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 423 ppi
  • 2.5 GHz deca-core Helio X25 processor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 32/64 GB of on-board storage, no microSD card expansion

honor 7

huawei-honor-7-review-18

Huawei has a slew of mid-range and high-end smartphones, and the company continues to expand their portfolio with new devices ever so often. One such series is the honor line, which falls under the "premium but affordable" segment, with one of the best options from the series being the honor 7.

The honor 7 was the first smartphone of the series that made the move to a full metal unibody construction, and the backing comes with a ceramic-like finish that counters the slipperiness that is usually associated with metal phones. Under the hood, the honor 7 packs an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 935 processor, clocked at 2.2 GHz, and backed by the Mali-T628 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. And with the software optimized for their in-house processing package, you get a smooth and snappy experience overall. There aren't a lot of extras in terms of hardware, but there is a fingerprint scanner on the back that works very well.

The honor 7 is another solid offering that gets a lot right with its beautiful display, impressive battery life, fantastic fingerprint scanner, good camera, and useful additions like the swipe gestures and the SmartKey button. The device is currently available for around $400.

Specifications:

  • 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 424 ppi

What’s your favorite camera app? [Poll of the Week]

htc-10-by-autom3otives-16-of-28-AA
Last week's poll summary: Out of almost 3,000 total votes, a staggering 48% of our readers said the Note 7's 3,500mAh battery is too small. 18% of our readers said that it should come with more than 4GB of RAM, and 16% said they wouldn't change anything about the Galaxy Note 7.

If you owned a smartphone between 2010 and 2013, you probably remember that the camera experience was less than desirable. Okay, smartphone cameras used to be downright bad. Lighting conditions would need to near perfect to get a decent shot, and low light photography was basically unheard of. It was flummoxing how poor smartphone camera tech used to be. Thankfully that's changed now, as most OEMs have made it a point to make their cameras more reliable.

There are a lot of other things that go into taking a decent photo, though. Manual controls and HDR mode are just a few of the features that can make or break a good photo, but unfortunately not every smartphone camera has these features. Luckily there are a lot of good camera apps available on Google Play that offer these features and more.

Manual Camera and Camera FV-5 are great options if you're looking for more control over white balance, ISO and other granular settings, while Google Camera offers up a simpler interface. With so many great camera apps out there, we want to know – what's your favorite camera app for Android? Are you a fan of the Google Camera, or do you just prefer to use the stock camera app that comes with your phone? Be sure cast your vote in the poll below, and if there's something you need to add, feel free to speak up in the comment section. We look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Pokémon Go hits 100 million installs on Android, made $200 million in its first month

Pokemon Go Pokemon Team

The Pokémon wave continues to wash across the world, with more regional releases in Central and South America, Asia and Oceania in recent days. While the game's popularity is on the wane in the U.S., it's worldwide appeal will last for a long time yet. With each new market, Pokémon Go adds a new spike to its download figures and opens up the potential for a lot more paying players. Pokémon Go has now surpassed 100 million installs in Google Play and reportedly made $200 million in its first month of release.

pokemon go 8See also: Pokemon Go increases battery pack sales by 101%31

Making millions daily

To put some of these figures in perspective, we recently reported that Pokémon Go developer Niantic is making $10 million per day on the title. Which is not bad at all considering the game's slow geographical slow rollout.

Now, app analytics firm Sensor Tower is reporting that Pokémon Go made $200 million in its first month of availability. As more and more new markets start playing, that monthly revenue figure may continue to grow significantly.

Pokemon Go PokeStop timer

100 million Android installs in a month

Following its launch on July 6, on July 25, Pokémon Go topped 50 million installs on Android and 75 million on iOS and Android combined. One week later on August 2, across both mobile platforms, Pokémon Go topped 100 million installs.

Then, less than one week later, on August 7, Pokémon Go surpassed 100 million installs on Android alone. (In Google Play, you'll notice that the game now sits in the 100,000,000-500,000,000 install bracket) The game saw its first 50 million Android installs in 19 days. The next 50 million came in half that time. With even more markets opening up that download rate will only continue to accelerate.

While some very large untapped markets remain, in particular India and Africa, some others – including Russia and China – won't be getting Pokémon Go for some rather comical reasons. Regardless, the game doesn't look like slowing down anytime soon and will likely earn a billion dollars for Niantic before the end of the year.

HP Powerup Backpack can charge your phone, tablet and laptop

HP Powerup Backpack

HP as unveiled a new smart backpack, called the Powerup Backpack, that can charge up your phone, tablet, and laptop while you're out on the go. The backpack has just gone up for pre-order on Amazon with a rather expensive $199.99 price tag. The pack will start shipping out on October 1st 2016.

The Powerup Backpack features a huge 22,400mAh rechargeable battery pack, which HP says is enough to charge a typical smartphone up 10 times over or juice up a tablet 3 times. There's also space inside to fit a 17.3-inch laptop, and the pack should be able to charge up most HP models. However, the backpack doesn't feature any USB Type-C ports, although it should still charge up phones using an adaptor cable, and fast charging technologies aren't support either, which is a little bit disappointing given the price tag. The backpack itself can be recharged through an easy to access side-pocket plug.

The smart aspect of the kit comes in the form of a built-in temperature sensor that is designed to ensure that the backpack doesn't become to warm while charging. The Powerup Backpack also allows the wearer to configure the priority and order in which devices charge.

The idea is certainly rather useful and it would be great to see a wider range of these products with support for additional hardware. If you're interested in pre-ordering the HP Powerup Backpack for $199.99, check out the Amazon link below.

Quadrooter: the latest Android security flaw

Quadrooter scanner app

Welcome back for another episode of "Android malware daily". In today's episode, the sinister Quadrooter vulnerability puts a billion Android devices at risk and won't be fully patched until the September security release. The flaws appear in the drivers for Qualcomm chipsets – so, a vast majority of Android devices – and could potentially allow a hacker to take over your device completely. But don't go stockpiling canned goods and barricading the basement just yet.

smartphone privacy security 2See also: Best Android security practices3

What is Quadrooter?

Yet again it's a privilege escalation vulnerability, the kind that would allow a hacker that manages to dupe you into installing a dodgy app – say a side-loaded version of Pokémon Go or the new Nexus Launcher – to then gain root access and take control over all aspects of your phone, from GPS and data to camera and microphone.

As the researchers that uncovered the flaw report:

An attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities using a malicious app. Such an app would require no special permissions to take advantage of these vulnerabilities, alleviating any suspicion users may have when installing.

Qualcomm-1

Qualcomm's response

Qualcomm distributed fixes for its drivers to its various partners and the open source community between April and the end of July. While three of the four vulnerabilities were addressed in Google's August security update, one has been delayed until the September patch.

While some devices including the Nexus line receive these patches lickety split, other devices have to wait months to get the latest security fixes. It is possible that individual OEMs will issue their own patches for the Quadrooter flaws before Google's next security update, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

In the meantime, the security researchers that uncovered the vulnerability recommend a few general security measures including not installing apps from outside Google Play, being vigilant with permission requests and always installing the latest updates from your carrier or manufacturer.

Unknown Sources install blocked security notification

The real issue

So while the chances of being affected by Quadrooter are very slim, the risk is there, as it always is with these big attention-grabbing vulnerabilities. But remember that exploits like these very rarely generate any real-world victims.

Perhaps the more important part of these stories is not that your phone might be affected, but that they force the security discussion into the spotlight. As Check Point correctly surmises:

This situation highlights the inherent risks in the Android security model. Critical security updates must pass through the entire supply chain before they can be made available to end users. Once available, the end users must then be sure to install these updates to protect their devices and data.

The inevitable app

As always, there is an app available to see what Quadrooter flaws your device is vulnerable to. But other than arming yourself with knowledge there is not much the app or you can do until the patches roll in. If you're interested, you can also download the report on Quadrooter from Check Point if you want to know more.

Quadrooter Scanner app checker

While hoping that Android security will suddenly become watertight and universally supported is a bit of a chimera, we can all play our part. Support those manufacturers that take security updates seriously, adopt best practices when installing apps, pay attention to permissions and so on. Until we can all say we do our bit, Android will continue to be an easy target for bad actors.

Google bigs up Google Photos storage savings in this video ad

Google Photos shared albums

Many Android users have probably found Google Photos to be a pretty handy backup tool, especially as it comes pre-installed on new devices these days. Even so, there are good alternatives out there and Google wants to show off just how handy its photo storage app can be, with a new advertisement about one of its latest features – Free up Space.

I'm certainly not the most prolific selfie snapper out there, but I've managed to jam up my microSD card and phone storage with enough pictures over the years that I'm starting to run out. Fortunately, Google introduced a new "Free up Space" feature to the Google Photo app earlier in the year that can delete old photos from your device that have already been backed up to online storage. The feature wasn't really marketed by Google at the time, so that's what this is ad is all about.

If you have been looking to free up some space on your device, head on over to the Google Photos app and open up the menu by sliding from the left. Go into the Settings menu and select "Free up device storage". The same setting can be found on iOS devices too, if you like that sort of thing.

If you haven't given Google Photos a try yet, you can download the app for free from the Play Store via the button below.
