Yeedi Vac 2 Pro Robot Vacuum Review: Speedy cleaner with an oscillating mop

The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro is a sweeping and mopping robot vacuum that can be used as a stand-alone vacuum. It has an optional auto-empty station that empties the onboard dustbin into the base station so you do not need to empty the dustbin as often.

The Yeedi’s mopping system is different from most other mopping systems I have seen. This mopping module oscillates to scrub the hard flooring as it passes over the area. Yeedi claims that this system is unique. However, the Hobot Legee 688  has a similar vibrating mopping robot vacuum. The mopping pad vibrated as the Hobot robot navigated around my house. I’m sure that there are other robots online with similar features to the Vac 2 Pro.

The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro has a fully-featured app so you can set a schedule and forget about it. The Vac 2 Pro will sweep your floor or sweep and mop if you have the mopping module fitted to the robot vacuum. Fill the mopping module with water and it will scrub areas of dirt from the floor.

This price is for the robot vacuum only. If you want the auto-empty station then you will have to fork out a further $180 at Yeedi’s site or buy the bundle of the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro robot vacuum and auto-empty station at Amazon for $579.99.

Auto-empty station dust bag capacity 2.5l

About this review: This review was written after testing a Yeedi Vac 2 Pro two-in-one robot vacuum, provided by Yeedi over a period of a month. Yeedi did not have any input in this article.

Yeedi Vac 2 Pro: What’s in the box?

The box for the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro includes the robot vacuum only. If you want to buy the auto-empty station it comes at an extra cost in a different box. Some manufacturers bundle the auto-empty station package for the same price, but Yeedi offers consumer choice if you do not want the auto-empty station too.

In the box, there is:

  • One robot vacuum cleaner
  • One docking station
  • One side brush for the robot vacuum cleaner
  • One main roller brush
  • One on-board dustbin
  • One oscillating mopping module
  • One washable mopping pad which attaches to the mopping module
  • One cleaning tool for cleaning hair and dust from the roller brush
  • One power cord.

Design and Features: Oscillating mopping and 3000Pa suction power

  • Smart visual mapping and navigation
  • Powerful 3000Pa suction
  • Carpet detection sensor will avoid carpets in mopping mode and boost suction in sweeping mode
  • Auto-recharge when the battery is low
  • Auto-empty station
  • Voice assistant compatibility

Yeedi vacuum technology has come on by leaps and bounds since I first tested the Yeedi k700 robot in August 2020. The company has significantly upped its game and the product quality certainly shows. The Yeedi brand has invested both in app design and functionality. The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro is the latest in its range of multi-function robots and its oscillating mop which will scrub floors as it sweeps shows that the brand continues to innovate.

yeedi-vac-2-pro-underside-sweeping-brushes-eileen-brown-xda-developers.

Accurate mapping with the fully-featured app

  • Clean the floor once or twice per clean
  • Suction boost when a carpet is encountered
  • Carpet avoidance when mopping module is fitted
  • Effective object avoidance

The white, Yeedi Vac 2 Pro multi-function robot vacuum has been designed to look stylish and smooth. There is a side sweeping brush and a roller brush with silicone fins underneath the unit. The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro does not have a LiDAR navigation unit on the top of the robot vacuum.

Unfortunately, there's no LiDAR on the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro.

Instead, the Vac 2 Pro uses visual mapping and navigation to map your space. The optional auto-empty station is compact and reasonably quiet when it empties the onboard dustbin. At maximum power, the Vac 2 Pro operates at 67dB which is fairly quiet.

yeedi-vac-2-pro-with-auto-empty-station-app-configuration-settings-eileen-brown-xda-developers

The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro easily connects to the Yeedi app. I had no issues connecting to the Vac 2 Pro. Open the Yeedi app, tap the plus sign in the top right-hand corner of the app, and scan the QR code on the machine under the lift-up lid. Follow the instructions on the app to invoke wifi and connect your wi-fi to the robot vacuum.

yeedi-vac-2-pro-with-auto-empty-station-app-settings-eileen-brown-xda-developers

The app is reasonable, although the map saved on the app is a little primitive. There are several features you can control on the app. You can adjust the suction power of the vacuum, and when the oscillating mop module is fitted you can change the volume of water delivered through the mop.

Carpet avoidance and scheduled mopping

yeedi-vac-2-pro-oscilating-mop-module-and-dummy-mobule-eileen-brown-xda-developers

The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro has a dummy module at the rear of the robot vacuum which must be removed before attaching the oscillating mop module. Click the button and pull to remove the dummy module and replace it with the mopping unit. A voice prompt will announce that it’s now in sweeping and mopping mode.

When the mop is in place, you can change the water flow to the mop and specify if you want the area to be cleaned once or twice. When it cleans, the robot sweeps in parallel lines and covers part of its tracks to make sure there are no dirty stripes on the floor. If you have a particularly dirty area you will need to make sure that the robot cleans the area twice.

yeedi-vac-2-pro-onboard-dustbin-eileen-brown-xda-developers

3000Pa suction for sweeping

In use, the 3000Pa suction on the Yeedi is efficient at collecting dirt, fluff, and dust from floors. It is also good at collecting pet hair from carpets and hard flooring. The oscillating mop is good at getting extra dirt from floors. I have several robots operating over the same floor which get washed several times per day.

There's more than enough suction for dust, dirt, and pet hair.

The Vac 2 Pro still managed to dirty its mop after mopping only one room. The robot vacuum avoided all the rugs in the room and mopped the entire hard flooring space. When the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro robot vacuum is in sweeping mode only, it will cross onto a carpet and boost the suction to maximum power.

When the robot vacuum detects that the battery is low, it will return to the dock to be charged before going back to the last location cleaned and resuming cleaning.

Object avoidance

The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro has advanced obstacle avoidance. If you have a relatively tidy floor you can set the app to basic obstacle avoidance. But if your floor is untidy, set the app to advanced obstacle avoidance.

This will make sure that the robot vacuum will avoid all objects. The Yeedi Vac 2 Pro did, in fact, avoid my coffee cup on the floor, but it punted a clear plastic wine glass around the room. Fortunately, the glass was empty.

You can connect the robot vacuum to your Alexa or Google Home voice assistant and use commands to start, pause or stop cleaning. You can specify areas for the robot to clean too.

Who should buy a Yeedi Vac 2 Pro robot vacuum?

  • You should buy the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro if you have hard, non-porous flooring throughout your home
  • If you have a mixture of carpet and hard flooring, you will need to remove the mopping module if you want the carpets to be swept. The robot will avoid carpet when the mopping module is attached to the robot vacuum.
  • Buy the additional auto-empty station for the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro to store up to 30 days worth of dust and dirt in the auto-empty station bag.

Why I like the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro

The Yeedi robot vacuum gets its job done quickly. It whizzes around hard floors and carpets and does not seem to get stuck very often at all. Its oscillating mopping module does seem to get more grime off the floors than other robots such as the Dreame Bot D10 Plus robot vacuum which only draws a wet cloth over the floors and does not scrub them.

The auto-empty station is a must if you really want the best from this robot vacuum.

To get the best hands-off experience out of the Vac 2 Pro, buy the additional auto empty station. Set the app to sweep and mop twice per session to get the cleanest mopping with the oscillating mop.

If you have a large expanse of flooring, keep an eye on the mopping module. At 180ml, the mopping tank will clean a reasonably sized area, but if you set the mop to its wettest setting, the water tank might have emptied before your second pass of the area has been mopped.

Intelligent mopping

You do not need to add no-mop zones to the Yeedi app. The Vac 2 Pro will recognize carpeted areas and will not cross them – unlike the Dream Bot D10 Plus which will drag its wet mop across any carpeted areas unless you set no-mop zones in its app. The only downside is that you need to remember to remove the mopping module and send the robot out again to sweep carpeted areas.

Fortunately, the app schedules will allow you to specify auto cleaning or area cleaning. You just need to be vigilant in replacing and removing the mopping module before its scheduled time for carpet cleaning or your carpets will remain unswept.

Should you buy this robot vacuum?

XDA Recommended Award Badge
At $449.99 as a standalone unit or $579.99 with the auto-empty station bundled the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro will automate your daily sweeping and mopping with minimal intervention. The robot will return to its base to recharge, and continue cleaning. The auto empty station means that you only need to empty the dust bag monthly, and the oscillating mop will scrub your floors as it mops.

I certainly prefer the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro over the $499.99 Dreame Bot D10 Plus robot vacuum. This robot vacuum seems to get the job done far quicker and scrubs the floors instead of just giving them a quick wipe-over with a cloth. However, you will need to pay extra for the auto-empty station as it is not bundled and I certainly think you should add that to your shopping cart.

How to get Samsung’s One UI 5 emojis on any rooted Android device

One of the biggest reasons Android enthusiasts keep coming to the XDA forums is to find new ways to theme their phone. Luckily, for devices which aren’t heavily locked down, you can go ahead and make widespread modifications, including those that are originated from a different OEM Android skin altogether. XDA Senior Member RKBD felt the same way and wanted to spice up the emoji experience. Thanks to his work, you can now start using emojis from Samsung’s Android 13-based One UI 5 on any device if you have root access.

Some people get excited about new hardware and software releases, but it’s important not to forget about the new emojis being brought into the Android world. Samsung typically introduces a new set of emojis with each significant One UI update. This year, the company will likely continue the tradition with One UI 5 on top of Android 13. While the fifth One UI revision has yet to get a public rollout roadmap even for its beta form, RKBD has managed to obtain the relevant font file containing the new emojis from an unreleased pre-release build, courtesy of 9to5Google‘s Max Weinbach and Dylan Roussel.

A brief refresher regarding the correlation between Samsung’s emoji implementation and Unicode standards: The current stable One UI 4 skin (based on Android 12) incorporates the designs from September 2020’s Unicode Emoji 13.1 set. The upcoming One UI 5 is seemingly based on Emoji 14.0, which was approved back in September 2021 alongside Unicode 14.0.

Here’s a quick look at the emoji style included in One UI 5’s font resources:

Samsung One UI 5 emoji set

How to get One UI 5 emojis on any Android device

To install One UI 5 emojis on your rooted Android phone, you’ll have to flash a specially crafted Magisk module. The module will replace the emoji font file of the target device in a “systemless” manner with the one containing the new emojis that will make an appearance in Samsung’s upcoming One UI release. Notably, the module will work on any rooted Android device, and it doesn’t require Android 13.

  1. Before starting, make sure your Android device is rooted with the latest version of Magisk.
  2. Download the Magisk module for the One UI 5 emoji pack from the author’s thread (linked below).
    •  If you’ve downloaded it on a PC or a Mac, then connect your Android device to it and copy the downloaded ZIP file to the internal memory of the target device.
  3. Open the Magisk app on your phone and switch to the Modules tab using the bottom navigation menu.
  4. Tap on the button named Install from storage.
  5. Browse and select the module ZIP you downloaded earlier.
  6. Magisk will now install the module and prompt you to restart.
  7. After rebooting, open the Magisk app once again and take a look at the Modules tab. The One UI 5 emoji module you flashed should be listed under the Installed section.
  8. Fire up the keyboard and check out the new emojis!

Download RKBD’s One UI 5 Emoji Magisk module

Unicode 13 emojis on Android 11 One UI 5 emojis

As you can see, the process of changing emojis on Android is not a very difficult exercise. In case you want to revert back, just disable (or uninstall) the Magisk module, do a reboot, and you will get back your stock emoji set in a jiffy.

One thing to keep in mind is that the One UI 5 emoji style is only visible on those UI segments, which use the OS-specific emoji font. Several apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and others are using their own styles and hence don’t necessarily reflect the new emojis. Furthermore, if the destination device and/or the platform does not include support for the Unicode 14.0 emojis, they will not be rendered properly on the receiver’s end.

Do you prefer to install custom emojis, or just use the built-in ones? Let us know in the comments section below.

“At a Glance” widget prepares to support Ring doorbell alerts

Just last month, Google updated its “At a Glance” widget on Pixel phones to add a bunch of new integrations. The Pixel 6 series debuted this revamped widget, which can display your calendar events, flight boarding pass, workout stats, and more on your home screen and lockscreen. One major integration was Nest doorbell alerts, along with a video feed. Now, strings discovered in a teardown suggest that support will soon be extended to Ring doorbells, too.

There are a few reasons why this is useful. Firstly, this can help you find out if a package has arrived, or if someone is just trying to get your attention out the front of your house. Being able to see an actual live video feed of your front door from your home screen is useful, especially if you leave your phone switched on on your desk. How the feature works is that when your doorbell detects activity at your door, the widget will show a persistent notification and a live feed of your front door.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that it’ll be rolled out any time soon, but Google is clearly preparing to add it to its “At a Glance” widget, anyway. Sometimes features like this pop up in APK Teardowns and take months to appear, though other times, they’re integrated practically immediately. There’s no real in between. For example, we spotted preparation from Ring to add support for a Glass Break Sensor in an APK Teardown. While those strings exist, the product and adjacent feature still hasn’t been released.

Thanks Mishaal Rahman for the tip!

Windows 11 deep dive: Snap Layouts and Snap Groups

Windows 11 is now widely available, but it’s still new for many of us. While Windows Insiders are continuously testing new features in preview, most users won’t know everything that’s new. We’re here to help by giving you a look at what’s new in Windows 11. This article will focus on Snap Layouts and Snap Groups, two new multitasking features in Windows 11.

These two new features build on top of Snap Assist, which was one of most useful features in Windows 10 (personally speaking, at least). While that gave you some options for easily snapping windows next to each other, Windows 11 makes it even easier and gives you more options too. Let’s take a look at what Snap Layouts and Groups bring to the table.

How to use Snap Layouts on Windows 11

Windows 11 makes snapping apps a much more discoverable experience compared to Windows 10. Before, you could drag an app to the edges of the screen to snap it to the side, or drag it closer to the corners of the screen to split the screen into four. With Windows 11, you can snap much more easily by hovering your mouse over the restore button on an app’s title bar. When you do this, you’ll see a few recommendations for snap layouts.

These layouts let you organize apps on your screen in different ways, and you can also choose which one of the slots in a layout the current app should take. You’ll see different layouts depending on the orientation and pixel density of your monitor, too. These are also far more layouts than you could have on Windows 10. You can have three apps side-by-side, and with different widths too.

Choosing a Snap layout for an app

Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, you can also access Snap Layouts by dragging a window to the top center of the screen. This is so you can access the interface more easily with touchscreens, and you can just drop the window into the layout you want.

image showing a Windows 11 app being dragged to the top of the screen to display the available Snap layouts

Once you snap the first app window to a position, Windows 11 will step in to help you finish setting up the layout. You’ll be able to choose from your open apps to fill each of the remaining slots in your layout, one at a time.

Choosing a second app to add to a snap layout Choosing a third app to add to a snap layout A completed snap layout with three apps

Once that’s done, you can see the apps you want in a single view. It’s also worth noting that, while using this mouse hover action is a new way to start layouts, there are new layouts you can create by dragging an app to the edges of the screen. For example, you can drag an app to the top of the screen to maximize it, but if you keep dragging along the top edge, you can snap it to a side (or the center) of the screen in a three-way split.

Snap Groups

Once you’ve set up your snap layout, Windows 11 saves that set of apps as a snap group. Technically, there isn’t much to this, but it’s very useful. Say you open another app on top of your snap layout, and you want to quickly get back to the layout you had before. When you move your mouse over one of the app icons on that taskbar, not only will you have the option to restore just that app, you can restore the entire snap group that app is part of. This way, you can quickly switch back to your setup, even if you opened other windows over it.

Snap groups

You can do this with any of the apps that’s part of that snap layout, so you don’t have to look for a specific one. If an app has multiple windows open, Windows can still remember which one was part of the snap layout. As we said, it’s not mind-blowing on a technical level, but it’s a super handy feature to have if you’re juggling multiple apps at the same time. With Windows 11 version 22H2, snap groups also show up in the task switcher by pressing Alt + Tab.

It’s also worth noting that these features work if you have multiple monitors too, so you can have different snap layouts on each monitor, and each of those layouts is saved as a group too.

That’s all you need to know about Snap Layouts and Snap Groups on Windows 11. Multitasking and productivity are a big focus of this version of Windows. It also brings new virtual desktop improvements, and using multiple monitors is also better.

If you’re interested in upgrading to Windows 11, you may want to check out the system requirements first. You can also try to find out if your PC is on our list of PCs that will support the upgrade to Windows 11.

These are the best cases to protect the MacBook Air in 2022

Apple revealed the MacBook Air 13 (2022) during the main keynote of WWDC22. This welcome addition to the expanding family of great Macs packs the M2 chip in an all-new, notched chassis. Considering this device category is popular among students, the Cupertino firm still sells the cheaper MacBook Air 13 (2020) for those not ready to pay as much. Cases for the 2020 model

That should give you a few great options for cases to protect your MacBook Air from drops and other dings. Taste is very personal, but there’s a bit of variety here to suit everyone. OnePlus will launch another pair of affordable TWS earbuds in India next month

After announcing the OnePlus 10T launch event earlier this week, OnePlus has now revealed that it will also launch a pair of affordable TWS earbuds in the Indian market days before the event. The upcoming earbuds, called the OnePlus Nord CE, will be the second earbuds in OnePlus’s Nord lineup and will be available for under ₹3,000 (~$38).

For the unaware, OnePlus launched the first TWS earbuds in the Nord lineup earlier this year in April. The OnePlus Nord Buds offered 12.4mm dynamic drivers, up to 7 hours of continuous music playback, four noise-canceling microphones, and fast charging support for just ₹2,799 (~$35). In addition, the earbuds also featured an IP55 rating for dust and water resistance, Bluetooth 5.2, and a low-latency mode.

Given that OnePlus uses the CE moniker for affordable versions of existing Nord devices, we suspect that the OnePlus Nord Buds CE could be more affordable than its predecessor. If that’s the case, it might not offer some of the premium features, like fast charging support and an IP rating, found on the older model.

A teaser image of the earbuds shared on Twitter further reveals that it won’t feature the same design as the OnePlus Nord Buds. While the Nord Buds featured a flat stem and silicone tips for a snug fit, the upcoming earbuds seem to feature a rounded stem and no silicone tips.

At the moment, we don’t have any further details about the OnePlus Nord CE, but a teaser page on OnePlus’ website states that the company will share more information in the days leading up to its launch on August 1.

Are you looking forward to the OnePlus Nord Buds CE? Let us know in the comments section below.

WhatsApp might soon let you hide your online status

WhatsApp has released several new features over the last few weeks, and the Meta-owned messaging app doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. After rolling out new visibility options for last seen, profile photo, and status, Android-to-iOS chat transfer support, and support for larger group chats, WhatsApp is now prepping another new feature.

According to a recent WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is now readying a feature that will let you hide your online status from your contacts. The feature was first spotted in a beta build of WhatsApp for iOS a few weeks ago and it has now made its way to the Android app on the beta channel. Although it is not live in the latest WhatsApp beta release (v2.22.16.12), WABetaInfo has managed to grab the following screenshot of the in-development feature.

Screenshot of upcoming WhatsApp Last seen and online settings.

Credit: WABetaInfo

As shown in the screenshot, the upcoming online status visibility feature will show up in a new section within WhatsApp’s Last Seen privacy settings. It will include two options — “Everyone” and “Same as last seen.” If you pick the former, everyone will be able to see when you’re online. But if you go with the latter, WhatsApp will automatically pick the visibility option you selected for the Last Seen feature.

Depending on the option you picked for the Last Seen feature, you’ll be able to limit your online status to your contacts or your contacts except for the users you’ve blocked for the Last Seen feature. You’ll also be able to block everyone from viewing your last seen and online statuses by selecting the option labeled “Nobody.”

As mentioned earlier, this feature is still in development and it’s not available in the latest WhatsApp beta release. We don’t have any information regarding its rollout at the moment, but we’ll let you know as soon as it starts rolling out on the beta or stable channels.

What colors does the MacBook Pro 13 (2022) come in?

So, you’ve decided you want a new Apple laptop, and you naturally want one of the best Macs, so that’s one with the newest M2 chip inside. Like the MacBook Pro 13 (2022), which while a minor refresh from the outside, boasts the latest and greatest on the inside. But which one to get? Quite rightly, you want to make sure you spend your money wisely and get the one you really want, and that includes getting the right color.

Apple has been less restrictive on its choice of colors in recent years. Are there some outrageous choices for the newest MacBook Pro 13? Alas, no. It’s a more clear-cut choice here.

MacBook Pro 13 (2022) has two colors only

MacBook Pro 13 (2022) colors

The MacBook Pro 13 (2022) is available in only two colors. And they’re both variants of grey. You can get it in either Apple’s signature Space Grey, or you can get it in Silver, the same shade as has been available on pretty much every MacBook Pro to date.

In a pinch, we’d suggest the Space Grey version looks the best. The darker tone suits the MacBook Pro 13 well. You’re perhaps a little disappointed in this selection, but if you want something else, there is another way.

MacBook Air comes in four colors

The latest MacBook Air also boasts the Apple M2 chip and similar specs all-round to the MacBook Pro 13 (2022). It’s a similar size, too, but it also has a wider range of colors to choose from. The MacBook Air is available in a total of four different colors:

  • Midnight
  • Starlight
  • Space Grey
  • Silver

Two of these are the same as the MacBook Pro 13 (2022), but the MacBook Air has the addition of Midnight and Starlight. The former is the darkest hue available, with a hint of navy blue in it, while the latter is essentially a gold MacBook Air. It’s a more subtle gold than its predecessor, though, and better looking overall.

So, if you wanted something a little different, the MacBook Air is a decent alternative. Prices are similar to the MacBook Pro 13 (2022) as well as being a little more striking on the color front.

    MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2)
The MacBook Pro 13-inch now comes with Apple's M2 processor, promising up to 39% more performance in games and image processing compared to the M1 model while delivering long-lasting battery life.
    Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022)
The 2022 MacBook Air offers the M2 chip and a redesigned chassis with MagSafe support. It's available in four colors to choose from.

Magisk v25.2 marks the beginning of the project’s Rust-ification

Back in 2021, we saw the first baby steps toward the adoption of the memory-managed Rust programming language into the Android codebase. John Wu, aka XDA Senior Recognized Developer topjohnwu, has apparently been thinking along the same lines for the Magisk Project. As per Wu, the experimentation had already begun after releasing the v25.0 build of Magisk via stable channel. Now, topjohnwu has rolled out a new stable build of Magisk in the form of v25.2, with the whole logging infrastructure transitioned to Rust.

A majority of Magisk’s low level components are written in C++. However, as a nonmemory-managed language, it opens the programmer up to memory leaks and buffer overflows. Rust, on the other hand, provides the raw speed, flexibility, and most of the direct mapping to hardware functionality that C++ would while offering a memory-safe environment. Although we don’t expect to see a full implementation of Magisk in Rust anytime soon, this early work on integrating Rust code into the project’s logging infrastructure is likely to be very important.

Magisk XDA Forums

Notably, an intermediate v25.1 build came out just twelve days after the v25 release went live, but it was a minor bug-fix update. The latest stable release of Magisk, however, is a full-fledged maintenance update that also features a number of MagiskInit-related improvements.

Below you can find the complete changelog for Magisk v25.2:

  • [MagiskInit] Fix a potential issue when stub cpio is used
  • [MagiskInit] Fix reboot to recovery when stub cpio is used
  • [MagiskInit] Fix sepolicy.rules symlink for rootfs devices
  • [General] Better data encryption detection
  • [General] Move the whole logging infrastructure into Rust

If you want to check out the v25.2 release in full detail, go ahead and download it to your device right now from the link below. In case you happen to run into any problems with the latest build, make sure to file a bug report on the “Issues” section of the project’s GitHub repository.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus is the first laptop certified for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Dell and Canonical have announced that the Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition is the first laptop to be certified for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Long Term Support). This is the latest LTS release of Ubuntu, following version 20.04, which is what the Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition currently ships with.

Starting in August, you’ll be able to buy the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS out of the box. If you’ve already bought a Dell XPS 13 Plus with Ubuntu 20.04, you can install the upgrade to 22.04 manually right now, and when the new optimized experience starts rolling out, you’ll get it automatically.

Ubuntu certification essentially means that devices have been tested and all of the features work as expected with Ubuntu. Certification is based on LTS releases, and that means you’ll get support for up to 10 years, as long as you stay on the same version of Ubuntu. While installing Ubuntu 22.04 right now should work fine, the hardware optimizations coming in August should make the experience a bit better.

As for what’s new in Ubuntu 22.04, you can expect a new version of GNOME 42, which includes improved desktop performance, better power management settings, more customization options, and more. There’s also a new display server called Wayland and an update audio server, PulseAudio, which improves support for Bluetooth audio devices. Ubuntu also now integrates with Azure Active Directory for use in the workplace, and it has the latest developer toolchains for things like Python, PHP, Ruby, and Rust.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition is one of the very best laptops you can buy right now, and that’s even more true among Linux laptops, since there aren’t that many. It has 12th-generation P-series processors with up to 14 cores and 20 threads, a 13.4-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio that’s fantastic for getting work done, and an ultra-modern design. You can buy it below if you want to get it right now, or wait until August to get the new experience optimized for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Samsung details the future of its foldables ahead of Galaxy Z Fold 4 launch

Samsung was the first major manufacturer to release a foldable smartphone. Despite the launch being less than ideal, the company continued to pursue the technology, making iterative improvements with its yearly releases. This year could be its best yet, as Dr. TM Roh, President & Head of MX Business, has claimed that “the mainstream moment for foldable smartphones is here.”

Last year, Samsung dominated the foldable smartphones category, bringing the technology to the masses with its aggressive pricing, financing plans, and trade-in deals. Roh says that last year, 10 million foldable devices were shipped, which is triple that of the year prior. Within the Galaxy foldable line, 70 percent gravitated to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, while the remaining 30 percent to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This insight is crucial because it shows consumers buying into foldable phones but choosing a different way to experience them. Despite impressive shipments last year, Roh predicts that in the future, growth will continue, which could be a sign of what’s to come.

While foldable phones were once viewed as a novelty when first introduced, they have quickly garnered mainstream approval and success.  The consumer and its interaction with Samsung foldable devices have pushed the company to bring innovation to the space. It has “made advancements” this year with its foldable product lineup, which should further expand the experience for its users. The company says that some of these things wouldn’t be possible without its partnerships with the likes of Google, Microsoft, and others.

Almost time to unpack

Samsung recently started its marketing campaign for its next foldable smartphones, releasing a cryptic tweet and then revealing that its next line of foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, would be revealed on August 10. The virtual Galaxy Unpacked event should be interesting, as there have been rumors of slightly tweaked designs and improvements in the screen technology. The main star of the event will be smartphones, but Samsung should also have some accessories to show off.

Currently, Samsung has opened its Galaxy Phone reservation page, and like in prior years; there are plenty of deals to be had and incentives that could total up to $200 in credit. While it’s hard sometimes to get excited about something we haven’t seen yet, it’s a good idea to register, as it is non-commital and only takes a name and email address to claim these early registration promotions. The promotional period closes on August 10.

Google Meet now lets you ask questions and answer polls anonymously

Although Google is currently in the process of merging Duo with Meet, the company hasn’t stopped adding new features to the latter. The latest feature to make its way to the video conferencing app lets users ask questions and answer polls anonymously.

According to a recent post on the Google Workspace blog, the new Google Meet feature will give participants the option to ask questions anonymously. Anonymous questions will be available by default, but meeting hosts and co-hosts will be able to disable it by heading over to Meeting Activities > Allow Questions in Q&A > Allow Anonymous questions. On the other hand, the new anonymous polls option will be disabled by default. Meeting hosts and co-hosts will see an option to turn it on when sharing a poll, as shown in the image attached below. Google notes that these settings will not carry over from meeting to meeting.

If you’re wondering whether meeting hosts and co-hosts will be able to see your name even if you ask questions or respond to polls anonymously, you can rest assured that they won’t. Google clarifies that the feature will keep your details anonymous to “other participants, the meeting hosts, and your Google Workspace Admin.” Google will, however, retain your poll responses and anonymous questions. The company will anonymize the data or delete it at a later stage.

The ability to ask questions and answer polls anonymously has started rolling out to users gradually. It should reach all Google Meet users in the coming weeks. Note that the anonymous questions and polls feature will be limited to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Nonprofits plans, as well as legacy G Suite Business customers. The features will not be available to Google Workspace Business Starter, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Frontline customers, or legacy G Suite Basic customers.

YouTube Music update brings support for Android 13’s media controls UI

Google has started rolling out an update for the YouTube Music app to some users. The update (v5.16) targets API level 33, i.e., Android 13, and it brings support for the updated media controls that Google introduced with Android 13 DP2 earlier this year. However, the updated media controls UI for YouTube Music comes with a few monitor changes.

As you can see in the attached screenshots (via 9to5Google), the updated media controls UI for YouTube Music features cover art in the background, along with themed buttons based on colors extracted from the cover art. It includes a YouTube Music icon tucked in the top left corner, with the song’s name and album listed right underneath. In the top left corner, you’ll find the output picker with a large play/pause button right underneath.

The new animated progress bar resides at the bottom, flanked by the forward and back buttons. Lastly, you’ll find the shuffle and repeat buttons in the bottom right corner. Interestingly, the updated UI does not feature a like/dislike button, even though it was available in previous versions. For reference, we’ve attached screenshots of the media controls in Android 12 and Android 13 DP2 below.

As mentioned earlier, YouTube Music v5.16 is currently only available for a small number of users. It hasn’t rolled out widely through the Play Store, but it should make its way to more users over the coming days.

It shouldn’t be long before Google updates the rest of its apps for the upcoming Android 13 release. The company has already seeded the final beta build for the Pixel lineup, and the first stable build should be right around the corner.

What do you think of the updated YouTube Music media controls UI? Is it an improvement compared to the one found on Android 12 devices? Let us know in the comments section below.
