OPPO Enco X2 leaked render reveals design and Dynaudio collaboration

Besides smartphones, OPPO also makes some of the best wireless earphones. Last year, we had the opportunity to review the company’s flagship TWS OPPO Enco X and were quite impressed with its overall performance.  With fantastic ANC performance and great sound quality, the earbuds gave premium TWS such as the Apple AirPods Pro and Huawei FreeBuds Pro a run for their money. OPPO is now gearing up to unveil a direct successor the Enco X and a new leak has given us our first look at the upcoming earphones’ design.

According to known tipster IceUniverse, OPPO’s next flagship earphones will be called Enco X2. The tipster has also shared a render of the Enco X2, giving us our first look at the earphones’ design. As you can see, the Enco X2 doesn’t seem to look radically different from its predecessor in terms of the overall design. The earbuds still come inside a cobblestone case but it’s unclear whether it has a glossy finish or matte finish. The leak didn’t shed any light on possible features or specifications of the OPPO Enco X2. But in any case, we expect the Enco X2 to offer improved sound quality and ANC performance over their predecessor. We’re also hoping to see some improvements in battery life and charging speed.

We don’t know when OPPO plans to launch the Enco X2. But considering the Enco X2 came out all the way back in October 2020, the official launch shouldn’t be that far off. As always, the earphones will likely launch first in China before making their way to other markets.

Flock could be Twitter’s answer to Instagram’s Close Friends feature

In July last year, Twitter showed off three concept features that aimed to give users greater flexibility and control over their tweets and profiles. One of these features aimed to help users make their tweets visible to only a small group of people, much like Instagram’s “Close Friends” feature. At the time, Twitter called this feature “Trusted Friends.” But it could soon make its way to users under a new name — Twitter Flock.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

A teardown of Twitter for Android version 9.27.0-beta.2 has revealed new strings pointing towards the upcoming feature. The strings clearly state that the feature will let users limit the visibility of their tweets to a small group of people. Like Instagram’s Close Friends feature, Twitter will give users the option to add users to their “Twitter Flock” and only members of the Flock will be able to see and reply to the tweets.

Prolific app reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi has managed to enable the feature ahead of the rollout and shared the following screenshot. As you can see, the feature will let you add up to 150 people to your Twitter Flock and share tweets privately with them. Only members who are part of the Flock will be able to view and reply to these tweets. Users will also get the option to add or remove people from their Flock at any time, and people won’t be notified when removed from a Flock. However, as the aforementioned strings reveal, Twitter will notify people when users add them to a Flock.

The feature is currently a work in progress and it isn’t live in the latest Twitter release. Twitter hasn’t shared any official information about the rollout so far, but we’ll make sure to let you know as soon as it shows up in an upcoming beta update.

Samsung unpacks what to expect at Unpacked 2022

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is just around the corner. While we’ve seen leak after leak reveal bits and pieces of the company’s newest flagship line of smartphones, there’s still so much more that we don’t know yet. The company’s Unpacked event has now been confirmed for February 2022 (with no specific date given), and at the event, we expect to see the Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus, and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

As Samsung puts it, this is “the next evolution of Galaxy”. Dr. TM Roh, President & Head of Samsung Mobile Communications, said the following in a post on the Samsung Newsroom.

“At Unpacked in February 2022, we’ll introduce you to the most noteworthy S series device we’ve ever created. The next generation of Galaxy S is here, bringing together the greatest experiences of our Samsung Galaxy into one ultimate device,” he wrote.

“We know many of you were surprised when Samsung didn’t release a new Galaxy Note last year. You loved the unparalleled creativity and efficiency of the Galaxy Note series, which enabled you to switch from gaming nirvana to high-octane productivity in the blink of an eye. You raved about the lifelike S Pen, which many say rivals putting ink to paper. And we haven’t forgotten about these experiences you love.”

The usage of the word “noteworthy” in particular is also likely to be a hint for what’s to come. We’ve already seen how the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will pack an S-Pen slot just like the Note series did, making it somewhat of a spiritual successor. Not only that, it’s said to feature a curved display similar to the Galaxy Note 20, a 5,000mAh battery, and a quad-camera setup consisting of a 108MP primary shooter along with a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 10MP 10x telephoto camera, and another 10MP 3x telephoto camera.

The company also released a fifteen-second trailer, showing two silhouettes of different smartphones coming together and forming one device — which is like a nod to the S22 Ultra effectively being an S series device and a Galaxy Note rolled into one.

As already mentioned, Samsung’s 2022 flagship lineup will reportedly consist of three models; it’s not all about the Ultra. We also expect to see both the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22 Plus launched at the event.

All three of these smartphones are expected to pack Samsung’s newest in-house Exynos 2200 SoC which interestingly suffered an unplanned delay in its own launch just last week. However, this SoC likely won’t be used in the US and India, as both regions are likely to get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 instead. As far as the design is concerned, the standard Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ are believed to retain the last year’s design, as seen in leaked renders. Both phones will reportedly feature a 50MP GN5 primary shooter.

Samsung is specifically touting the camera prowess of these smartphones at night, saying that these phones will take “the best and brightest photos and videos you’ve ever captured with a phone”. We’re excited to see what the company has in store for us at its Unpacked event next month.

Automate your Vacuum and Mopping Sessions with the New obode P8

It’s a very interesting time in the world of robot vacuums, as we are seeing all sorts of new innovations that continue to add further automation to these machines. Now with a new product called the obode P8, you can get a robot vacuum that can refill its own water tank, and dry its own mop, using the docking station. The obode P8 adds more automated features, resulting in even less time that you’ll spend interacting with your vacuum.

Clean, Sweep, and Mop with Automated Efficiency

The obode P8 is a smart robot vacuum with the ability to clean your carpets and hard floors. Mopping modes are dry and wet, although the two modes can be combined easily. Using this method avoids the common problems with automated machines such as spreading mud during sweeping, thus ensuring a deep clean.

 

Mopping the floor can be made easier with the smart lifting roller brush. The brush can be raised 7mm at any time. Upon raising the roller brush, the vacuum function will automatically be turned off to eliminate inefficient cleaning. This removes the need to use multiple attachments, which is common with other robot vacuum brands.

Whenever the user switches the cleaning mode, the backwashing and drying of the mop will automatically be triggered to prevent secondary pollution. The obode P8 will return to its docking station and proceed with the docking process.

 

Smart Mopping Advancements

When you get a vacuum with a built-in water tank, the typical way to refill this would be to detach the tank and take it to the sink. This is no longer needed with the obode P8, thanks to the autofill feature integrated into the docking station. When the P8’s tank is empty, it will dock at the station and the 220ml water tank will be replenished using the internal water supply.

Bubble shower function makes it easy to remove stubborn stains with water spraying, and the rotary pressurized mopping at 200 rpm means the pressure reaches 14N, providing deep decontamination without leaving any residue on the floor. Wet mopping is accomplished with the robot at a low noise level of 56dB.

Smart Sweeping and Vacuum Advancements

The new features don’t end with mopping but can be found with sweeping and vacuuming as well. The P8 is able to do a much better job at basic sweeping, than robot vacuums from the past. The robot has the ability to automatically recognize carpets and activate the super suction pressurization mode of 4000Pa, which sucks out the stubborn and fine dust in the gaps deep in the carpet.

The new LDS smart navigation system can achieve centimeter-level high-speed mapping without omissions. The sixth-generation navigation algorithm is combined with ToF radar and several sets of navigation sensors. A triple anti-collision system helps the robot avoid obstacles and leave difficult areas with maximum flexibility.

These are the Best Samsung Galaxy S21 FE alternatives in 2022

While we prepare for the flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 series to launch in a couple of weeks, Samsung has announced the more affordable Galaxy S21 FE. It’s a good phone for people who are looking for a flagship experience at a not-so-flagship price. Samsung’s brand value and their feature-rich OS might compel some people to pick the Galaxy S21 FE. However, if you’re open to other options, here are the best Galaxy S21 FE alternatives that you can buy that are either better than the phone or provide better value. If you still plan on going with Samsung’s offering, take a look at the best Galaxy 21 FE deals to save some money.

1. Google Pixel 6

This should be the most obvious choice if you’re looking for an alternative to the Galaxy S21 FE. The Pixel 6 slots in right below the Pixel 6 Pro and is an excellent value offering which is why a lot of people may even opt for the Pixel 6 over the Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 is also slightly smaller than the Pixel 6 Pro which a few people may prefer. You get the same sort of software support on the Pixel 6 too. The battery is slightly smaller at 4600mAh but the smaller screen and lower refresh rate mean that the battery life is going to be as good as the Pro if not better. Starting at just $599, the Pixel 6 is a great value offering and should be the phone most people should get if you want the best value flagship.

If you play a lot of games on your phone, The Galaxy S21 FE with the Snapdragon 888 is going to perform slightly better but there won’t be any noticeable difference in day-to-day usage. The build quality is better on the Pixel 6 and while you lose out on a telephoto lens and a 120Hz display, Google’s software magic on the Pixel 6 makes up for it. If you take a lot of photos especially, you’re going to love the Pixel 6.

2. OnePlus 9

OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 is a proper flagship smartphone making it a perfect alternative to the Galaxy S21 FE. OnePlus has been all about speed right from the beginning and the OnePlus 9 is no different. It’s got the might Snapdragon 888 chipset under the hood, the same as the one found in the Galaxy S21 FE in the US, and better than the Exynos 2100 on international variants. If you want a phone that runs fast and can play heavy games, look no further.

Just like the Galaxy S21 FE, the OnePlus 9 also has a Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The rear houses cameras that are tuned by Hasselblad and while there’s no telephoto camera on the OnePlus 9, the good battery life and extremely fast 65W charging more than makeup for it. The Galaxy S21 FE can only charge at up to 25W which is no comparison to OnePlus’ Warp Charge tech.

At the time of writing, the Oneplus 9 is also a good $100 cheaper than the Galaxy S21 FE making it a no-brainer. OnePlus will also update the device for three years just like Samsung.

3. Apple iPhone 13 Mini

This could have been the iPhone 13 instead of the Mini, but the iPhone 13 Mini is closer to the Galaxy S21 FE in terms of price which is why the recommendation. The iPhone 13 Mini is better than the Galaxy S21 FE in just about every aspect except for the display. Apple’s A15 Bionic is a fantastic CPU that beats the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100 both in terms of performance as well as efficiency. The iPhone 13 Mini also has a glass back in place of the plastic one on the S21 FE.

While the Galaxy S21 FE may have an extra telephoto camera lens, the quality of images and videos captured by the iPhone 13 Mini is better. One area where you will be making a compromise with the iPhone 13 Mini is in terms of the display. The Galaxy S21 FE has a larger display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The iPhone 13 Mini, as the name suggests, has a small 5.4-inch display with a 60Hz refresh rate. The Galaxy S21 FE’s display just feels more modern and would be better for content consumption.

That being said, if you can extend your budget, we suggest picking up the standard iPhone 13 for a larger display and for an overall better package. The battery life on the iPhone 13 Mini has also improved considerably from last year’s 12 Mini and it only gets better on the standard iPhone 13. Of course, all this is prevalent only if you’re willing to make the switch to iOS. If you’re an ardent Android fan, you might be hesitant but if you don’t mind iOS, the iPhone 13 or the iPhone 13 Mini are great alternatives depending on your budget.

4. Asus Zenfone 8

It comes in at a similar price point as the Galaxy S21 FE with the rest of the specs also being quite similar. The display is smaller but it has got the same AMOLED tech and 120Hz refresh rate ensuring smooth scrolling and performance.

The Galaxy S21 FE has an extra telephoto camera on the rear and a larger battery compared to the 4,000mAh battery cell on the Zenfone 8. Of course, not everyone likes smaller displays with so much of content to consume online of late. However, if you are one of those people who like smaller devices, you should surely consider the Asus Zenfone 8. It’s currently retailing for slightly lesser than the Galaxy S21 FE at $629.

5. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G

It’s got a powerful Snapdragon 865 SoC, a 120Hz AMOLED display, a similar set of cameras as the Galaxy S21 FE, and a good overall package with a 4,500mAh battery and support for wireless charging. Given that it belongs to Samsung’s premium range of phones, you will also get three years of Android version updates.

Granted the Galaxy S21 FE is newer, it will receive an extra year of updates but that’s something you can look past especially if you plan on using the phone for 2-3 years only. 5G support on the Galaxy S20 FE means that you won’t miss out on the latest networking tech either. You can get the Galaxy S20 FE for at least $100 lesser than the Galaxy S21 FE and if you look for deals or used/refurbished devices, you can get it for much cheaper too. If you want to save some money while getting a similar experience from the same brand, the Galaxy S20 FE still makes sense in 2022.

6. Best Alternative for India: OnePlus 9RT

The OnePlus 9RT is the newest launch from OnePlus in India and the specifications are quite similar to that of the Galaxy S21 FE. The rear houses triple cameras on both phones but the Galaxy S21 FE gets a more useful telephoto camera. The display on both phones is also similar — a Full HD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. However, there are a few key differences that make the OnePlus 9RT a better pick when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE.

For starters, the chipset on the Galaxy S21 FE sold in India is the Exynos 2100 which is powerful, but not that great when it comes to mobile gaming. If you play a lot o heavy games like BGMI and Genshin Impact, you will notice a dip in performance. On the other hand, the OnePlus 9RT packs the Snapdragon 888 chipset which is more powerful and can handle heavy tasks with ease. Another aspect going to the OnePlus 9RT is the 65W Warp Charging which trumps the 25W charging support present on the Galaxy S21 FE.

Overall, the OnePlus 9RT just seems like a more well-rounded phone and also provides better value compared to the Galaxy S21 FE.

Instagram starts testing new subscription features in the US

In November last year, we learned that Instagram was planning to add a new monetization feature that would allow users to subscribe to their favorite creators. The platform has now started testing three new subscription features in the US in a bid to give creators on the platform a stable source of income. The subscriptions are currently available for a select few creators in the region, but Instagram plans to release them to more creators in the coming months.

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri announced the test in a recent video on Twitter, highlighting the three new ways in which Instagram creators can utilize the new subscription features. As mentioned in the video, subscriptions on Instagram will let creators host live streams and share Stories exclusively with their subscriber base. In addition, subscribers will get a unique badge, which will help creators identify their subscribers on the platform. Mosseri has further revealed that the platform plans to expand these features so that the subscriptions are “integrated throughout the entire Instagram experience.” In addition, Instagram believes that creators “should own their relationship with their subscribers.” To that end, the platform is working on ways to allow creators to take their subscriber list and “bring them off of Instagram to other apps and websites built by other companies.”

Supercharge your Galaxy Z Flip 3’s cover screen with this app

I’ve been using the Galaxy Z Flip 3 for well over a month now and, while I like the phone as a whole, I’m not too fond of the cover screen. Even though the Galaxy Z Flip 3 features a much larger cover screen than its predecessors, it doesn’t offer much in terms of functionality. It currently supports only six widgets, including Music, Weather, Today’s schedule, Next alarm, Voice Recorder, and Timer, which aren’t as useful as you might think. And Samsung doesn’t offer many customization options either. To address this, XDA Recognized Developer jagan2 has come up with CoverScreen OS — an app that simulates a significantly more functional secondary OS for your Galaxy Z Flip 3’s cover screen.

If you own a Galaxy Z Flip 3, you should definitely give CoverScreen OS a shot. It gives you access to a full app drawer, lets you open apps (and even some games) on the cover screen, supports third-party widgets, provides quick toggles to enable/disable a few settings, and even features an active media player card. Furthermore, you can use CoverScreenOS to reply to messages using voice typing and add an LED notification indicator to the cover screen. Check out the video embedded below to see it in action.

I’ve been using CoverScreen OS on my Galaxy Z Flip 3 running One UI 4 for a little over a day now, and it’s a major improvement over what Samsung offers by default. If you want to give it a go, you can follow these steps to install it on your Galaxy Z Flip 3:

  • Download CoverScreen OS from the Google Play Store or this XDA forum thread
  • Set up Bixby (required for fingerprint unlock to launch apps on the cover screen)
  • Set side key to launch Bixby on long press (Navigate to Settings > Advanced features > Side key and toggle ‘Wake Bixby’ under ‘Press and hold’)
  • Launch CoverScreen OS and login with your Google account
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to grant accessibility permissions
  • Tap on the toggle in the top right corner of the app to grand notification access and enable CoverScreen OS
  • Fold your Galaxy Z Fold 3 and you should see a welcome notification from CoverScreen OS

Note: Make sure you have Bixby enabled on your device before setting up CoverScreen OS. It doesn’t seem to work if you install and set up the app first and then enable Bixby.

Once you have CoverScreen OS set up on your Galaxy Z Fold 3, you can customize the widgets you see on the cover screen by heading into the app and tapping on the ‘+’ button at the bottom. After picking the widget of your choice, tap on the toggle next to it to enable it. You can also reorder the widgets by tapping and holding the button to the left of the widget and dragging it to the desired position.

Add new custom widgets to CoverScreen OS

Before you proceed, note that CoverScreen OS is currently in its early stages of development. Therefore, you might encounter some bugs. It’s also worth mentioning that if you’ve updated your Galaxy Z Flip 3 to One UI 4, you might not be able to open apps on the cover screen. jagan2 is currently working on a fix for this issue, and it should roll out with a future update.

If you’re still willing to try CoverScreen OS, here are some navigation instructions from the developer:

  • Swipe right to open the notifications screen
  • Swipe left to show custom widgets
  • Swipe down to open Quick settings toggles
  • Swipe up to access media playback controls
  • Tap on Home to open app drawer
  • Notifications:
    • Tap on notifications to see more details and swipe down to go back to the notifications list
    • Swipe right to exit to the home screen from the app drawer
  • If you open an app on the CoverScreen:
    • Swipe left from the right edge to navigate back

YouTube may soon let you loop video chapters

In May 2020, Google unveiled a new feature for YouTube called video chapters. As the name suggests, video chapters break down a YouTube video in chunks, making it easier to jump to specific sections of a given video without having to fiddle with the progress bar. The feature is immensely helpful when watching long videos as it allows you to quickly skim through irrelevant parts. And it’s set to become even more useful with a new repeat mode.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

YouTube version 17.01.36 recently rolled out on the Google Play Store and within the APK, we have found new strings for a repeat mode for video chapters.

While it’s long been possible to loop YouTube videos, there’s currently no way to loop just a specific portion of a video. This is where this chapter repeat mode comes into play as it will allow users to view a single video chapter on repeat without having to manually pull the slider or loop the whole video. The ability to repeat or loop a video chapter can come in handy if you’re watching a tutorial or DIY video and want to take notes or follow along with instructions.

Note that the ability to repeat YouTube video chapters is still a work-in-progress and hasn’t rolled to users yet. We’ll keep a close eye on the feature and let you know if we discover any new details.

Garmin Venu 2 Plus launched in India with up to 9 days of battery life and advanced health tracking

At CES 2022 earlier this month, Garmin unveiled a new smartwatch called the Garmin Venu 2 Plus. An upgraded version of the Garmin Venu 2, the new smartwatch retains all the best features from the last year’s model while also adding a built-in microphone for calls, animated on-screen workouts, and an additional navigation button. While the Venu 2 Plus was initially limited to markets like the US, the company has now officially launched its latest smartphone in India.

The Garmin Venu 2 Plus comes in three colorways: Graphite Black, Cream Gold, and Powder Grey. It’s priced at ₹46,990 (~$632) in India and will be available from leading online retailers including Amazon India, Flipkart, Tata CLiQ, and synergizer.co.in. It’ll also be available from offline channels like Croma, Just in Time, Helios, and GBS stores.

Google brings Android games to Windows in limited beta

You’ve always been able to play Android games on your PC, though it’s never really been easy. Projects like Android x86 and Bluestacks have typically been your best bet. Back in December of 2021, Google announced that it intended on bringing Android games to Windows, making use of the Android app layer that comes as part of Windows 11. Now, Google has brought the Google Play Games app to Windows through a very limited beta only available to some users in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

As reported by Ars Technica, Google says you’ll be able to “play a catalog of Google Play games on… Windows PC via a standalone application built by Google.” The company then goes on to say that it’s “excited to announce that some of the most popular mobile games in the world will be available at launch, including Mobile Legends: Bang BangSummoners WarState of Survival: The Joker Collaboration, and Three Kingdoms Tactics.”

In addition, games that use the Google Play Games cloud to store achievements and progress will be able to sync their progress across all of your devices, including PC, mobile, and Chrome OS. Note that this does not include regular apps on the Google Play Store, and it’s only games. For regular apps, you’ll still have to download them through the Amazon App Store or through sideloading.

Google has launched pages for the beta sign-up and a developer site, and both have some more information, though the company doesn’t go into detail about how Google Play Games works yet. All we know so far is that it’s not built on existing technology from Microsoft, Bluestacks, or others, and that it also isn’t game streaming. The company has released a set of minimum requirements that you’ll need to meet:

  • Windows 10 (v2004)
  • Solid state drive (SSD)
  • Gaming-class GPU
  • 8 logical cores of CPU
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 20 GB of available storage space
  • Windows admin account
  • Hardware virtualization must be turned on
  • Compatible PC device and configuration

Google says that the official release date will vary among regions. The company will start with the beta regions of Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan, and will expand to other regions later in 2022 and beyond.

YouTube introduces annual YouTube Premium & Music plans at a discounted price

YouTube has introduced new annual subscription plans for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music. The new plans are currently available at a discounted price, but the promotion ends soon. If you’re a YouTube Premium or YouTube Music subscriber, you should check out the new annual subscription plans below and consider subscribing before the offer ends.

According to 9to5Google, the new YouTube Premium annual plan is currently available for $107.99. In comparison, YouTube Premium’s monthly plan, which costs $11.99 per month, is about $36 more expensive annually. Both existing and new subscribers can get this plan, but you need to hurry because the promotional pricing ends on January 23.

The new YouTube Music Premium annual subscription is also available at a discounted price of $89.99, which is around $2.50 per month cheaper than the monthly subscription plan. After the promotion ends on January 23, the YouTube Premium annual subscription plan will set you back $119.99, while the YouTube Music Premium annual plan will cost $99.99.

A YouTube support page further adds that the new annual plans are non-recurring subscriptions. This means that users will have to manually renew their subscriptions every year. It’s also worth noting that YouTube will not offer partial refunds on these plans if you want to stop using its services after a few months. The new annual subscription plans are only available to individual subscribers in the following regions: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Germany, Thailand, India, and Japan.

Along with the new annual subscription plans, YouTube has announced that it will scale back a significant portion on YouTube Originals. In a statement on Twitter (via The Verge), YouTube’s Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl said: “Going forward, we will only be funding programs that are part of our Black Voices and YouTube Kids Funds. We will honor our commitment for already contracted shows in progress and creators who are involved with those shows should expect to hear from us directly in the coming days.”

Kyncl provided a couple of reasons behind this decision, including a shift to other initiatives like YouTube’s Creator Shorts Fund, Black Voices Fund and Live Shopping programming, and YouTube Global Head of  Original Content Susanne Daniels’s departure from the company.

Qualcomm, Vodafone, and Thales demonstrate major development in iSIM technology

Qualcomm today demonstrated a working smartphone featuring the next-gen integrated SIM (iSIM) technology in partnership with Vodafone and Thales. The new technology integrates the functionality offered by a physical SIM card to the main processor, which allows for “greater system integration, higher performance, and increased memory capacity.” Integrating the SIM with the main processor also frees up some valuable space, as it doesn’t require a separate chip like eSIM solutions or a SIM card tray, which has quite a few additional benefits.

In its press release, Qualcomm states that its iSIM technology offers the following benefits:

  • Simplifies and enhances device design and performance by releasing space previously occupied within a device
  • Consolidates the SIM functionality into the device’s main chipset alongside other critical capabilities such as GPU, CPU, and modem
  • Enables remote SIM provisioning by the operator leveraging the existing eSIM infrastructure
  • Opens mobile service connection capabilities to a host of devices that previously could not have SIM capabilities built-in

The press release further reveals that Qualcomm’s proof of concept (POC) demonstration took place in Europe at Samsung’s R&D labs and it illustrates the “technology’s commercial readiness and efficiency working on existing infrastructure, leveraging Vodafone’s advanced network capabilities.” In the demonstration, Qualcomm used a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, which features the Snapdragon 888 SoC. The Snapdragon 888 has a built-in Secure Processing Unit that runs the Thales iSIM operating system.

Talking about the demonstration Qualcomm’s Enrico Salvatori, said: “iSIM solutions offer great opportunities to MNOs, free-up valuable space in devices for OEMs, and provide flexibility for device users to benefit from the full potential of 5G networks and experiences across a wide range of device categories. Some of the areas that will benefit most from iSIM technology include smartphones, mobile PCs, VR/XR headsets, and industrial IoT. By engineering the iSIM technology into the SoC, we are able to create additional support for OEMs in our Snapdragon platform.”

At the moment, Qualcomm hasn’t shared any info on when we can expect to see its iSIM technology on a commercial device. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as Qualcomm reveals more details.

The Xiaomi 11T Pro is one of the best affordable flagships launched last year and, while it’s a bit late to the Indian market, it should still be a great buy for several reasons. The device features a fantastic 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz peak refresh rate, up to 480Hz touch sampling rate, 1000nits of peak brightness, 10-bit color, HDR10+ support, and Dolby Vision certification.

As mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi 11T Pro packs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip, up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, and up to 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage. Therefore, it offers impressive performance, no matter what you throw at it. As Adam mentioned in his review of the Xiaomi 11T Pro, the device can easily handle everything from emulation to games without any issues.

In the camera department, the Xiaomi 11T Pro features a 108MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5MP macro camera on the back. Over on the front, it has a single 16MP selfie shooter. Other noteworthy features include a dual speaker setup tuned by Harman Kardon, 5G support, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and a USB Type-C port.

Rounding off the hardware is a 5,000mAh battery, which supports 120W wired fast charging with the included charger. In our testing, we found that the 120W fast charger can charge the 5,000mAh battery from 1% to 71% in just 10 minutes. So, even if you’re a heavy user, you shouldn’t face any battery woes with the device.

On the software front, the Xiaomi 11T Pro runs MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11 out of the box. At the moment, Xiaomi has not shared the MIUI 13/Android 12 release timeline for the device. However, the company has promised three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the device.

Pricing & Availability

The Xiaomi 11T Pro will go on sale in India starting today through Mi.com, Amazon, and other retail outlets. It will be available in three colors — Celestial Magic, Meteorite Black, and Moonlight White. The device will be available in three RAM/storage configurations, which are priced as follows:

  • 8GB + 256GB: ₹41,999 (~$563)

Google preps new “Your screen time” Digital Wellbeing widget

After announcing new widgets for Google Photos, Play Books, and YouTube Music last month, Google is now prepping a new Digital Wellbeing widget. The upcoming widget will let you easily keep track of your screen time on your home screen and even provide info about how much time you spent on your most frequently used apps.

A teardown of Digital Wellbeing v1.0.416751293.beta by our friends at 9to5Google has revealed key details about the upcoming “Your screen time” widget. Although the widget is not live in the latest beta release, the publication has managed to enable it manually and shared the following screenshots.

As you can see, the “Your screen time” Digital Wellbeing widget gives you easy access to your screen time on your home screen. In the 2×1 configuration, the widget only shows your total screen time. But if you go for a larger size, it also shows the time you spent on the top three apps. It’s also worth noting that the widget supports Android 12’s wallpaper-based theming engine and changes colors based on your current wallpaper. Furthermore, it supports dark and light themes.

Mishaal Rahman notes that while the widget is not live in the current beta release, it is indeed functional. Samsung announces the new Exynos 2200 SoC with Samsung Xclipse 920 GPU

The launch of a new chip is a big event in the smartphone space. Unlike phones that can be designed, manufactured, and sold by a number of OEMs, phone SoCs are limited to a handful of players, and even fewer of them compete in the flagship space. These flagship SoCs define the very competition expected in the year, laying the groundwork for feature sets that we can expect to see in our next Android flagship. Samsung has now finally announced the new Exynos 2200 SoC with the Xclipse 920 GPU, which will give tough competition to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Samsung Exynos 2200 SoC

GPU: The new AMD RDNA 2-based Xclipse 920

The Samsung Exynos 2200 is an exciting SoC, and we’ll get to the full rundown in a bit. But to start off, it’s worth talking about the biggest highlight of this new SoC. The Exynos 2200 comes with the new Xclipse 920 GPU, a direct product of the partnership that Samsung had announced with AMD back in Jan 2021. It is expected to offer massive performance improvements over the Mali-G78MP14 on the Exynos 2100. If you have used an Exynos 2100 flagship, like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra that is sold in India, you would know how terrible gaming performance on the device really is. I have personally purchased and used the Galaxy S21 Ultra as my daily driver, and it is a rather disappointing experience for my daily gaming fix with Genshin Impact. So much so that I shifted to the OnePlus 9 Pro and the Mi 11 Ultra (both with Snapdragon 888) as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

With the Exynos 2200 and Xclipse 920, Samsung is setting some lofty expectations. This is the first Samsung chipset with AMD’s RDNA 2-based GPU. RDNA is the codename for AMD’s current Radeon graphics architecture, and RDNA 2 is used in the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, as well as AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards. The architecture that is used for consoles and desktop graphics is now being integrated into a mobile chip. This integration is what allows Samsung to tout “console-quality” immersive visuals with the first hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) solution for mobiles in the form of the Xclipse 920 GPU. There is also variable rate shading (VRS) onboard.

Ray tracing refers to tech that simulates how light physically behaves in the real world, while VRS tech allows developers to apply lower shading rates in areas that will not impact quality, thus improving frame rate. While we definitely need to wait to see how the chip and its GPU actually perform on these expectations, simply using these keywords in marketing materials instantly raises the bar of expectations so much higher than what it was with the Mali-G78MP14 on the Exynos 2100. If Samsung is bringing down console and desktop features down to mobile, surely the Xclipse GPU performs better than the Mali-G78MP14, right? One can hope.

Samsung’s press release also mentions that the Xclipse GPU is the “first result of multiple planned generations of AMD RDNA graphics in Exynos SoCs“, so we certainly hope to see great gaming performance become a default feature for Samsung’s flagship SoC in the future.

CPU: The latest from ARM

For the CPU, the Exynos 2200 follows the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 closely, in that both have made the jump to the ARMv9 architecture that was introduced in March 2021. Qualcomm’s Kryo chip in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is based on the ARMv9 architecture-based CPU designs, and Samsung uses the same CPU designs on the Exynos 2200. Much like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Exynos 2200 features a Cortex-X2 prime core, three Cortex-A710 performance cores, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores. Samsung has not revealed the exact clock speeds, so we will have to wait on a device to release to get access to that information. Either way, we expect a much smaller delta in performance between these two flagship chips this year than it has ever been in the recent past.

Exynos 2200: NPU

Samsung’s press release isn’t too heavy on the details for the NPU, and we reckon that this could become a point of difference between Qualcomm and Samsung’s offering this year. NPU’s have grown in importance as smartphones have relied more on AI and ML for their functions, and if the Google Tensor chip on the Pixel 6 series is any indication, the results are worth watching out for.

For the Exynos 2200, Samsung claims the upgraded NPU has doubled in performance compared to its predecessor. The NPU now offers “much higher precision with FP16 (16bit floating point) support in addition to power efficient INT8 (8bit integer) and INT16.

Modem

The Exynos 2200 comes with a 3GPP Release 16 5G modem, with support for both sub-6GHz and mmWave. The claimed top speed is 7.35Gbps download on mmWave, but with the E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) feature, the modem can boost speeds to up to 10Gbps by utilizing both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals.

Security

For safekeeping, the Exynos 2200 comes with Integrated Secure Element (iSE) to store private cryptographic keys as well as to play a role as RoT (Root of Trust). Also, an inline encryption HW for UFS and DRAM has been reinforced to have user data encryption safely shared only within the secure domain. We hope to get more details on these features once the chip makes its way onto a device.

Exynos 2200: ISP

The Exynos 2200’s ISP supports camera resolutions up to 200MP, opening the door for a future Samsung device to ship with an ultra-high res camera if Samsung wanted to. At 30fps, the ISP supports up to 108MP in single camera mode, and 64+32MP in dual camera mode. Further, the ISP can connect to up to seven individual image sensors, and even drive four of them concurrently — this should open the door for more versatile camera setups as well as better and seamless switching between lenses.

With the help of the NPU, the ISP can realize a more content-aware camera experience, such as ML-based AI recognition for multiple objects, the environment, and faces within scenes.

For video recording, the ISP supports up to 4K HDR, and up to 8K resolution recording. The Multi-Format Codec (MFC) on the Exynos 2200 allows for up to 4K @120 and up to 8K @30 encoding, and up to 4K @240 and 8K @60 decoding. The MFC integrates the AV1 decoder, so you get better power efficiency and longer playback time.

Exynos 2200: Release and Availability

Samsung mentions that the Exynos 2200 is in mass production. There’s no mention of any timeline or device estimates, which is rather intriguing if you have been following the leaks and news around this new SoC. The Exynos 2200 was originally supposed to launch on Jan 11, 2022. But the day went by with no announcement. Samsung had even deleted the date announcement tweets, fueling speculation that the Exynos 2200 may not materialize after all. Samsung had to clarify that the new chip will be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S22 launch. And here we are a week later with the chip being announced, but no devices being named.

Current speculation suggests that markets like Europe are still on track for receiving the Exynos 2200 in the Galaxy S22 series, while markets like the US and India are expected to get the Galaxy S22 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Samsung has not clarified either way, so it remains to be seen how the situation pans out. Nonetheless, we are excited to finally see a gaming-competent Exynos chip and Samsung flagship.
