Google disables Hold for Me and Call Screening for some Pixel 6 phones

Google’s Pixel phones don’t always have the most cutting-edge hardware on the market but they do pack some nifty software tricks that you won’t find on any other Android device. One such nifty feature is “Hold for Me,” which is quite handy when you call a business or customer care support and they put you on hold. In these scenarios, Hold for Me can wait for you and notify you when a human is back on the line ready to talk to you. It was introduced on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G last year and is powered by Google’s Duplex technology. But it looks the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro won’t be able to use the feature for some time.

Google announced on Wednesday that it’s temporarily disabling the Hold For Me and Call Screening features on Pixel 6 devices due to a bug in the recently released update.

“In light of a bug in the December Android update, we are disabling Hold For Me and Call Screening on Pixel 6 devices running on the Android S December QPR release,” said a Googler in a recent post.

The issue only affects devices running the Android Build number SQ1D.211205.016.A4. To identify the build number, go to Settings > About phone > Build Number and check if the build starts with SQ1D.

If you haven’t received the December 2021 security update that started rolling out last week, you should continue to have access to Hold for Me and Call Screening features. Similarly, older Pixel phones aren’t affected as well. Google says our teams are working on resolving the issue and provide an update as soon as a fix is ready.

Originally a US-exclusive feature, Hold for Me was expanded to Canada in September this year.

Android 13 may finally bring full support for Bluetooth LE Audio

From a new Material You design and a revamped notification shade to improved accessibility features and Privacy Dashboard, Android 12 packs many big changes. Besides these marquee features, the latest version of Android 12 also lays the necessary foundation for Bluetooth Low Energy Audio, a new standard for low power audio transmission over Bluetooth. While Android 12 introduces the Bluetooth LE Audio API, there’s still work to be done to enable full support for Bluetooth LE Audio. But recent commits submitted to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) suggest that full support could finally be coming in Android 13.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, Google has merged the commits that add an LC3 codec type (LE Audio) for Bluetooth A2DP within Developer options. LC3 (Low Complexity Communications Codec) is a new high-quality, low-power audio code in Bluetooth LE Audio that promises to deliver high-quality audio even at low data rates. As Mishaal notes, it’s unclear whether these patches are enough to enable full support for Bluetooth LE Audio, but in any case, we can expect the codec to be ready for the next major release: Android 13.

For starters, LE Audio is a new standard that enables audio transmission over the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) radio. It was introduced by Bluetooth SIG at CES last year as part of the Bluetooth 5.2 specification. Before version 5.2, Bluetooth LE was strictly used for data transfer and didn’t allow audio transmission. Key features of LE Audio include lower power consumption, Multi-Stream Audio support for an improved audio experience on truly wireless earphones, the ability to broadcast one or more audio streams to an unlimited number of audio sink devices and more.

You can pentest your Android apps on Windows 11 using WSA

Many would argue that the best way to perform mobile application penetration testing on Android is physically connecting a bunch of Android smartphones to a PC or Mac and debugging them. This combination does offer a plethora of control options for pentesting, and for many testing scenarios, a higher degree of swiftness you can’t get from typical Android emulators. Even if you don’t have access to multiple devices, then Android Studio’s built-in virtual device (AVD) has typically been the go-to for such testing jobs. Rooting the AVD is possible and it integrates perfectly with the debuggers, so everything works out of the box. But if you’re running Windows 11 and you want to dip your toes into the Android app pentesting, you can easily do so without relying on emulators or VMs, courtesy of Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA).

According to Michael Higgo from Orange Cyberdefense, one could potentially use WSA for Android security testing in the same manner as on a physical Android device. Higgo, who is the Lead Security Analyst at SensePost, recently published a short blog post with some general details on how to conduct Android application security testing on WSA. When it comes to assessing the security posture of an Android application, utilizing a runtime mobile exploration toolkit like Objection in conjunction with Windows Subsystem for Android makes the job quite streamlined for a security researcher.

The Android subsystem of Windows 11 is powered by the same technology that makes the second generation of Windows Subsystem for Linux a reality. Thanks to the seamless Hyper-V-assisted virtualization, WSA is significantly faster than any other Android emulator out there. Moreover, you can sideload apps on WSA, or even modify the underlying system image in order to install Play Store and other Google apps. In a nutshell, it totally makes sense to use Windows Subsystem for Android as a uniform and reproducible pentesting platform.

If you’re into traffic intercepting, then you’ll be happy to know that Higgo‘s article covers that angle as well. After installing a launcher in WSA, one can access the network settings section of the Android layer. Next, you can install a certificate authority and set up custom proxy to intercept the traffic using web vulnerability scanner tools like Burp suite.

[Update: Power restored] AWS is having another outage, causing issues with Amazon, Slack, Imgur, Epic Games Store, and more

It seems that huge portions of the internet are struggling right now, including Slack, Imgur, the Epic Games Store, and more. Huge portions of the internet are reliant on Amazon Web Services, known as AWS, and when they face issues, so does the entire internet. If you’re having problems with some of your favourite websites, you definitely aren’t alone. Other affected sites include Coinbase, Hulu, and Udemy, to name a few.

User reports recently spiked on Down Detector. At first, Amazon said on its AWS status page that it was investigating “increased EC2 launch failures and networking connectivity issues” in its USE1-AZ4 availability zone.

“We are investigating increased EC2 launch failures and networking connectivity issues for some instances in a single Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. Other Availability Zones within the US-EAST-1 Region are not affected by this issue.”

However, since then, the company has confirmed a power outage in the USE1-AZ4 availability zone.

“We can confirm a loss of power within a single data center within a single Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. This is affecting availability and connectivity to EC2 instances that are part of the affected data center within the affected Availability Zone. We are also experiencing elevated RunInstance API error rates for launches within the affected Availability Zone. Connectivity and power to other data centers within the affected Availability Zone, or other Availability Zones within the US-EAST-1 Region are not affected by this issue, but we would recommend failing away from the affected Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) if you are able to do so. We continue to work to address the issue and restore power within the affected data center.”

Outages like this are extremely rare, and very few last more than an hour. We’ve seen some more significant outages though recently from the likes of Facebook, and even another outage from Amazon just last week. As Amazon notes, the company is currently working towards restoring power to the data center, and companies should try to fall away from the affected availability zone if possible.

At 5:18 PST, Amazon confirmed it restored power to the majority of instances and networking devices.

“We continue to make progress in restoring power to the affected data center within the affected Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. We have now restored power to the majority of instances and networking devices within the affected data center and are starting to see some early signs of recovery. Customers experiencing connectivity or instance availability issues within the affected Availability Zone, should start to see some recovery as power is restored to the affected data center. RunInstances API error rates are returning to normal levels and we are working to recover affected EC2 instances and EBS volumes. While we would expect continued improvement over the coming hour, we would still recommend failing away from the Availability Zone if you are able to do so to mitigate this issue.”


Update 2: Amazon says power has been restored to all instances and networking devices

“We have now restored power to all instances and network devices within the affected data center and are seeing recovery for the majority of EC2 instances and EBS volumes within the affected Availability Zone. Network connectivity within the affected Availability Zone has also returned to normal levels. While all services are starting to see meaningful recovery, services which were hosting endpoints within the affected data center – such as single-AZ RDS databases, ElastiCache, etc. – would have seen impact during the event, but are starting to see recovery now. Given the level of recovery, if you have not yet failed away from the affected Availability Zone, you should be starting to see recovery at this stage.”

Vivaldi partners with Polestar to create first browser for Android Automotive

Android Automotive is Google’s version of Android for in-car entertainment systems, with its own Play Store and downloadable applications — as opposed to Android Auto, which simply mirrors apps and media from your phone in your car. Vivaldi is one of the most popular web browsers on desktop and mobile platforms, and now it’s coming to Android Automotive.

Vivaldi said in an announcement, “The Vivaldi web browser arrives in Polestar 2, from the pure play, premium electric car company, Polestar. It is the first browser available for Android Automotive OS. Answering one of the top desires from Polestar owners, the inclusion of a full-scale web browser in the car allows people to browse the web as they might on their mobile devices.”

The Polestar 2 was the first production car to ship with Android Automotive, and the Vivaldi port includes tabbed browsing, the ability to stream media (though video playback is hidden while driving), a built-in ad blocker, page translation, notes, tracking protection, and sync with Vivaldi on other devices. The interface looks similar to Vivaldi on tablets, at least from the screenshots provided. The main drawback is that files cannot be downloaded, but that’s probably not too important in a car.

The browser appears to be a great new feature for owners of the Polestar 2, especially given the car is attempting to compete with Tesla’s vehicles (which also have web browsers), but that’s unfortunately the only car Vivaldi is officially compatible with at this point. Vivaldi confirmed to XDA Developers that expanding support to more cars is planned, but for now, anyone with an Automotive car that isn’t a Polestar 2 is out of luck.

Google recently shipped Android Automotive 12, which includes some enhancements from Android 12, interface improvements, new APIs for apps, and the end of support for 32-bit devices. Vivaldi has also been working on updates for its browser on other platforms, such as the recent addition of side panels and multiple tab rows to Vivaldi on Android tablets.

Realme GT 2 Pro design and release date officially revealed

We have learned quite a lot about the Realme GT 2 Pro over the past few weeks. We know it will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and we also know it will pack the world’s first 150-degree ultrawide camera. And now the company has given us the first look at the phone’s design and has confirmed the launch date.

As revealed by Realme CEO Sky Li earlier today, the Realme GT 2 series will globally launch on December 4. The launch event will take place in Mainland China at 11:30 UTC.

Alongside the launch date announcement, Realme also gave us a first look at the Realme GT 2 Pro, which the company says is designed by Naoto Fukasawa, a Japanese industrial designer. Notably, Fukasawa also co-designed the Realme GT Master Edition series that came out in July this year. Realme says the phone’s design is inspired by paper and uses a new bio-based polymer material.

As far as specifications are concerned, the Realme GT 2 Pro will be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and feature a 150-degree ultrawide camera with a new Fish Eye mode. It will also come with a new “Antenna Array Matrix System” which incorporates ultra-wide-band antenna-switching technology (HyperSmart), a Wi-Fi Enhancer, and 360° NFC for enhanced connectivity.

Details about the Realme GT 2 Pro’s display, camera hardware, battery, charging speed, and so on aren’t known at this point. But with the official launch just a couple of weeks away, we won’t have to wait too long about Realme’s latest premium flagship.

Leaked press render showcases the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus

A leaked press render showcasing Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra has now surfaced online. It gives us a close look at both the devices, and confirms some of the details that we’ve seen in various leaks over the last few months. The new render confirms that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will borrow design cues from the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it will feature a new camera module design. This updated camera module design falls in line with the design we saw in leaked live images of the Galaxy S22 Ultra early last month.

As you can see in the attached image (via LetsGoDigital), the Galaxy S22 Ultra looks a lot like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, with the exception of the camera module. Unlike the Galaxy S21 Ultra, each rear-facing camera on the Galaxy S22 Ultra is housed in separate circular camera islands, which resembles the layout seen on the LG Velvet. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same as a Mystic Bronze Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The image also gives us a look at the Galaxy S22 Plus, which doesn’t stray too far away from the Galaxy S21 lineup in terms of design.

While the press render doesn’t reveal much else about the devices, we already know that the Galaxy S22 lineup will pack flagship hardware. Recent leaks suggest that the devices will pack either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip or Samsung’s Exynos 2200 SoC (based on region) and the top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra will offer S Pen support. In addition, we’ve learned that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will include a 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 10MP 10x telephoto camera, and another 10MP 3x telephoto camera.

At the moment, we have no further information about the Galaxy S22 lineup. But we expect to learn more in the coming weeks. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we have more details.

Amazfit GTR 3 Pro, GTR 3, and GTS 3 get a new software update

In October, Amazfit refreshed its smartwatch lineup with the introduction of the Amazfit GTR 3, GTR 3 Pro, and GTS 3. All three smartwatches have a great price to performance ratio and offer a feature-packed software experience that can hold its own against the likes of Wear OS-powered watches. Shortly after the launch, Amazfit rolled out a major software update for the new watches that fixed many bugs and optimized the heart rate sensor. Now the company is rolling out a new update for the lineup that brings along some new features and refines the overall software experience.

Amazfit GTR 3 Pro Review: A surprisingly excellent smartwatch

The Amazfit GTR 3 Pro is getting firmware version (via Tizenhelp) 8.26.3.1, while the GTS 3 is picking up firmware version 7.30.3.1. In terms of changes, the latest update adds a GoPro mini app to the Zepp app store, a background app status indicator on the watch face, the ability to manually calibrate altitude, and more.

Note that out of all three watches only the GTR 3 Pro has the app store. As such the GTR 3 and GTS 3 won’t be able to access the GoPro mini app or any new apps that get added to the app store in the future, for that matter.

Here’s the complete update changelog:

  • Amazfit GTR 3 Pro:
    • Add GoPro mini app, download in Zepp’s app store.
  • Add background application status indicator on watch face
  • The control center adds the screen lock function
  • Add manual altitude calibration

Disney+ Hotstar tests new mobile-only plans in India

In a bid to attract more subscribers, Netflix recently reduced the pricing of all its plans in India. You can now get Netflix’s entry-level Basic plan for ₹199 per month (previously ₹499), while its mobile-only plan will set you back ₹149 per month (previously ₹199). To keep up with the competition, Disney+ Hotstar is now following suit and has reportedly started testing new mobile-only plans in the region.

According to recent reports from OnlyTech and TelecomTalk (via Gadgets360), Disney+ Hotstar has started testing two new mobile-only plans with a limited number of users in India. The entry-level mobile-only plan is priced at ₹99, but it’s currently available at a discounted price of ₹49. It is an ad-supported plan that gives you access to the complete Disney+ Hotstar library on one device with HD (720p) streaming support and stereo audio quality. The plan is reportedly available for select Android users and it’s limited to users who pay using a card, Paytm, PhonePe, or UPI.

The other mobile-only plan is priced at ₹299, but it’s currently available at a discounted price of ₹199. The plan gives you access to the Disney+ Hotstar library for six months, and it has the same limitations as the other mobile-only plan. At the moment, Disney+ Hotstar has shared no official information about these new mobile-only plans. But we expect the streaming service to share more information ahead of the wider rollout.

It’s worth noting that Disney+ Hotstar’s new mobile-only plans not only undercut similar offerings from Netflix but also offer higher resolution streaming support. As mentioned earlier, Disney+ Hotstar’s new ₹99 plan offers 720p streaming support, while Netflix only offers 480p streaming support on its ₹149 mobile-only plan. On the downside, Disney+ Hotstar’s new mobile-only plans are ad-supported, while Netflix doesn’t show ads on its mobile-only plans.

Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge with 120W fast charging support launches in India on January 6

Towards the end of October this year, Xiaomi launched the latest iteration of its popular Redmi Note series in China. The new Redmi Note 11 lineup included three devices — the standard Redmi Note 11, the Redmi Note 11 Pro, and the Redmi Note 11 Pro+. Just a few days after the launch, XDA Senior Member kacskrz spotted new strings within MIUI ROMs suggesting that Xiaomi was planning to launch the two Pro variants in India under the Xiaomi banner. The strings revealed that the Chinese Redmi Note 11 Pro (codename: pisarro) would make its way to India as the Xiaomi 11i (codename: pisarroin), while the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ (codename: pisarropro) would launch as the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge (pisarroproin).

While Xiaomi hasn’t officially confirmed any of these details, the company has now announced that it will launch the Xiaomi 11i series in India on January 6. A recent tweet from Xiaomi’s Manu Kumar Jain reveals that the Xiaomi 11i series will land in India early next year. The tweet also confirms that one of the devices in the new lineup will feature 120W fast charging support, which will charge the phone from 0-100% in about 15 minutes. In addition, the tweet mentions the Hypercharge moniker.

The information provided in the tweet lines up with our previous report, so it’s safe to assume that the upcoming Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge will be a rebranded Redmi Note 11 Pro+. As such, it will likely feature the same MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, a 6.67-inch FHD+ Samsung E2 AMOLED display with a 120Hz peak refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate, up to 8GB RAM, up to 256GB storage, and a 4,500mAh battery with 120W fast charging support.

The device will sport a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 108MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. Over on the front, it will feature a 16MP selfie shooter. As far as the software is concerned, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge will likely launch with MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11.

As mentioned previously, the standard Xiaomi 11i will be a rebranded Redmi Note 11 Pro, featuring the same 6.67-inch FHD+ Samsung E2 AMOLED display with a 120Hz peak refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate, MediaTek’s Dimensity 920 SoC, up to 8GB RAM, up to 256GB storage, and a 5,160mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. The device will feature the same triple camera setup and selfie camera as the Hypercharge variant, and it will likely run MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11.

Based on the Chinese pricing, we expect the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge to launch in India at a starting price of around ₹25,000 (~$330). The standard Xiaomi 11i will be a bit more affordable and it might launch at a starting price of around ₹20,000 (~$265). ASUS’ expensive ROG Phone 5 Ultimate will go on its first sale in India on December 26

The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate was launched as part of the ROG Phone 5 series earlier this year. The limited-edition model comes in a special Matte White finish, packs a whopping 18GB of RAM, and features a monochrome “PMOLED ROG Vision” display on the back. At the launch time, ASUS said the Ultimate edition would be going on sale later in the year. Now the Taiwanese company has shared the availability and pricing of the device for the Indian market.

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 Ultimate will go on sale in India on December 26. The phone comes in a single 18GB/512GB variant and will be available from Flipkart for ₹79,999. The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate comes in a special box that includes a bunch of ROG merchandise. Since it’s a limited edition model, quantities will likely be limited.

Honor teases its first foldable flagship — the Honor Magic V

In June this year, we got wind that Honor had started work on its first foldable phone. At the time, we learned that the upcoming device would feature in-folding panels from BOE and Visionox. While we haven’t seen any new info about the device since then, Honor has now shared a teaser giving us a glimpse of its design and confirming its name — Honor Magic V.

The upcoming Honor Magic V will be Honor’s first foldable phone and, as the teaser notes, it will feature flagship hardware. We expect it to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, as Qualcomm had listed Honor as one of the first few OEMs to use the new chip. However, this is mere speculation, as Honor has not revealed any information about the device’s hardware.

The teaser image also gives a close look at the Honor Magic V’s hinge and flat edges, but it doesn’t reveal much else about the device. In a press release accompanying the teaser image, Honor notes that the Honor Magic V will make its way to the Chinese market soon. But the company doesn’t mention anything about international availability. We expect to learn more about the Honor Magic V in the days leading up to the launch.

The Honor Magic V will soon join the growing list of flagship foldables from Chinese OEMs. It will compete with OPPO’s recently launched Find N, the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold, the Huawei Mate X2, and the upcoming Huawei P50 Pocket. It will likely be priced aggressively to undercut the flagship foldables from Samsung.

That said, if you can get it from a brick-and-mortar store for a reasonable price, it’s still an excellent buy with a great set of specs.

You get a QHD+ AMOLED screen that’s vibrant and comes with a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC, which was Qualcomm’s flagship chip last year. It handles everything with ease and provides great performance. The onboard 4,200mAh battery is enough to last through the day, and the company has also added support for 65W fast charging on the phone. In addition, the phone was launched with Android 10 but has since received the Android 11 update.

There are three cameras on the back, headlined by a 48MP shooter. All three cameras can take excellent photos. The 32MP selfie camera also does a good job.

Best Mid-Range: Oppo Reno 6

The Reno 6 is a step down from the Reno 6 Pro and our pick for the best mid-range smartphone in Oppo’s India portfolio. It shares several of the Reno 6 Pro’s specs, but costs much lower than the phone, making it better value for money. It’s powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, which provides snappy performance. In addition, the phone packs a Full-HD+ AMOLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and runs Android 11 out of the box.

The battery life of the Reno 6 is good, and thanks to support for 65W fast charging, the phone charges quickly. You also get three cameras on the back, including a 64MP primary camera and an 8MP wide-angle shooter. It’s the same camera setup as the Reno 6 Pro except for the lack of depth sensor, so the Reno 6 also takes excellent photos with a good amount of detail.

The phone also has a nice design that’s slim and feels good in the hand. The phone uses a capable MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC that provides solid performance. The Full-HD+ AMOLED screen is also good and shows punchy colors and deep blacks. The only thing lacking on the display front is a high refresh rate, a feature Oppo even provides in some of its budget phones.

The F19 Pro+’s 4,310mAh battery is decent, if not impressive, and will last through the day. 50W fast charging support comes in handy when the phone discharges and you need a quick top-up. Among other features, you get a quad rear camera setup that houses a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle shooter, and two 2MP macro and mono cameras. Unfortunately, the cameras are slightly underwhelming for the price tag, and if you need good imaging experience, you’re better off with the Reno 6. In addition, the phone runs on Android 11.

    The Oppo F19 Pro+ features a 6.4 inch Full-HD+ AMOLED screen, MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC, and 8GB of RAM. The phone also packs a 4,310mAh battery with 50W fast charging support.

Best for most people: Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G

The Reno 6 Pro has been out already for quite a few months and is undoubtedly newer. However, for the extra premium that you’ll be paying for the Reno 6 Pro, you won’t be getting your money’s worth, especially when you take a look at what the Reno 5 Pro offers for considerably lesser. It’s got a power MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC, a beautiful curved OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and a capable set of cameras on the rear that resembles the Reno 6 Pro’s camera setup.

In our Oppo Reno 6 Pro review, we mentioned that it didn’t really warrant an upgrade from the Reno 5 Pro since there weren’t any major changes at all. The Reno 5 Pro, being a generation older, can be bought at a considerably lower price when compared to the Reno 6 Pro. This makes it the phone that most people would be happy with, in our opinion, especially if you can crack a good deal on it. You won’t be missing out on much compared to the Reno 6 Pro and you’ll get a flagship-like experience.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money but still want a good mid-range smartphone from the brand, the Oppo A74 can be a great option for you. It’s also got 5G capabilities making it future-proof for a few years to come. It’s comparatively more affordable compared to the Reno series but doesn’t make a lot of compromises. It has a Snapdragon 480 chipset which doesn’t sound all that powerful on paper, but it’s good enough for most use cases. If you’re planning to play a lot of heavy games though, this phone might not be for you.

The reason why this phone can be a good fit for most people is that it covers all the basics resulting in a good experience for the end-user. For example, there’s a 90Hz display that will make scrolling navigating quite smooth, delivering a positive experience. There’s a 50MP rear camera that takes some decent shots. The phone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging. While the charging speed could have been better, the battery life that you’re going to get is going to be pretty good.

    Oppo A74 5G
    The Oppo A74 is a good mid-range option that satisfies the needs of a basic user. This makes it a good recommendation for most people, especially if you're looking for an Oppo phone under ₹20,000.

Best Budget: Oppo A33

In the budget segment, the Oppo A33 is the company’s best phone. It comes with a good set of specs for a phone you can buy for around Rs. 10,000. You get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC, 3GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. In addition, there’s a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. High-refresh rate displays aren’t standard in the entry-level segment, so it’s nice to see Oppo include one in this phone.

On the software side, the phone has Android 10, which is slightly disappointing, but the phone should still provide a good experience. In addition, the A33 features triple rear cameras, including a 13MP primary shooter. There’s an 8MP selfie shooter onboard as well.

    The Oppo A33 is a budget Android phone with Android 11, HD+ screen, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC. The phone also features a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.

Also Great: Oppo A53

Oppo A53

The Oppo A53 is another decent phone in the company’s budget lineup, but it’s over Rs. 1,500 more expensive than the A33. There are quite a few similarities between the A33 and A53, but the latter gives you more RAM. With the increased RAM, you can expect the A55 to be snappier than the A33. The only other difference between the A33 and A53 is the higher resolution selfie camera in the A53.

These are the best Oppo phones you can buy in India today. Until Oppo brings the Find X3 series to India, the Reno 6 Pro and the Find X2 are the best Oppo phones you can buy. LG’s new DualUp monitor is like having two monitors on top of each other

LG is back at it with its pre-CES announcements, this time introducing a pair of new premium monitors, mostly geared towards creative professionals. The two new displays are the LG UltraFine Display (32UQ85R) and the new DualUp Monitor (28MQ780), and of the two, the latter is definitely the more unique one.

The LG DualUp Monitor is a 28-inch monitor designed to improve productivity by giving you essentially two displays at the same time. It comes in an unusual 16:18 aspect ratio, which is exactly the same as having two 16:9 screens on top of each other, just without any bezels in the middle. If you’re into multi-tasking and you want to see as many apps as possible on the screen at a given time, this is a valid solution for you. With Windows 11 adding new features like Snap Layouts and Snap Groups, this is probably one of the best times to launch a monitor like this, though it’s still a bit jarring.

The display on the DualUp Monitor is fairly sharp, coming in what LG calls Square Double Quad HD resolution, or 2560 x 2880. The display covers 98% of DCI-P3, it has 300 nits of brightest (which can adjust automatically), and the contrast ratio is 1000:1, which isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but still solid. The monitor has HDR 10 support, but it can’t truly display HDR video because of the relatively low maximum brightness. For sound, it has two 7W speakers built-in, so you should at least get an immersive sound experience with it.

As for the rest of the monitor, it has a stand capable of height, tilt, pivot, and swivel adjustments. It has one USB Type-C port with 96W power delivery and DisplayPort Alt mode, two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort, one upstream USB, and two downstream USB ports.

Aside from the DualUp Monitor, LG also introduced the more standard 32-inch UltraFine Display. This comes in the typical 16:9 aspect ratio and has 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. It too covers 98% of DCI-P3, but it goes up to 400 nits of brightness and it has a higher contrast ratio of 2000:1, promising deep blacks despite being an IPS panel. It also has DisplayHDR 400, so you’ll get a better HDR experience on it. Other features of this monitor include automatic self-calibration for color and AMD FreeSync support. For sound, this monitor packs two 5W stereo speakers.

The monitor’s stand supports height, pivot, and tilt adjustments, but no swivel. As for ports, it’s the exact same setup as what’s on the LG DualUp Monitor.

LG didn’t say when we can expect these monitors to be available, nor how much they will cost. LG also introduced new OLED monitors for creative professionals ahead of CES, as well as a 17-inch gaming laptop.

OSOM OV1 shown off for the first time, developed by former Essential staff

The Essential Phone was an interesting device when it was released in 2017. Its ceramic casing and display notch (which wasn’t common yet) stood out from the crowd, but a sequel was never officially released, and the company shut its doors in early 2020. Even though Essential in its original form no longer exists, some of its former staff have started up OSOM Products, which has now shown off its phone for the first time.

OSOM, which stands for “Out of Sight, Out of Mind,” was formed in November of last year and reportedly secured $5.6 million in initial funding. The company’s founder is Jason Keats, who was the head of research and development at Essential, and worked at Apple before that. Keats spoke to Android Police and shared the first actual details about OSOM’s first phone, the OSOM OV1, including an early render of the back of the device.

OSOM didn’t confirm many hardware details, besides that it will have two rear cameras, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and an unspecified Qualcomm chipset. More information about the device will arrive at Mobile World Congress in February (assuming there is an MWC), with a release date set for sometime in summer 2022.

The OSOM OV1 is focusing on privacy, with unique software features in development to reduce the amount of data is sent to the cloud services. The operating system will supposedly appear similar to “stock” Android (complete with all the usual Google services and apps), just like the Essential PH-1, but with changes targeting privacy and security. Again, there are not many specific details here, other than Keats’ claim of “100-fold more powerful” privacy features than what you would find on typical Android.

Besides the upcoming phone, Jason Keats also shared a few details about OSOM’s early days. The company had plans to complete the ‘GEM’ smartphone that Essential was developing before it collapsed, but that was reportedly scrapped due to supply chain problems. OSOM also says it’s the first new cell phone manufacturer in Canada since BlackBerry, as the company is registered in Quebec.

This is our first look at the Moto G Stylus 2022

Motorola’s Moto G series has been around for years, but one of the newer options in the lineup is the Moto G Stylus, which has a built-in (passive) pen for input. The current Moto G Stylus was revealed back in January 2021, and now it seems like Motorola is preparing a new model, thanks to new leaked renders.

Noted tech leak account OnLeaks has shared rendered video and images of the upcoming Moto G Stylus 2022, in collaboration with Prepp.in. The phone doesn’t look too different than the current iteration, with a large display (estimated to be around 6.8 inches), hole-punch front camera, and reflective back panel. However, the front camera is centered at the top of the screen, instead of aligned to the left side like the current Moto G Stylus. The headphone jack is also sticking around, which is always nice to see.

There’s no reliable information about the internal hardware right now, sadly. For comparison, the current Moto G Stylus has a 6.8-inch IPS LCD screen, a Snapdragon 678 chipset, 128GB of internal storage (with a microSD card slot), 4GB RAM, four rear cameras (48MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, 2MP depth). If it’s true the next phone will only have three rear cameras instead of four, that’s technically a downgrade, but Motorola is likely taking off the near-useless macro or depth sensor.

Motorola also released a mid-cycle upgrade in June of this year, the Moto G Stylus 5G. It swapped out the phone’s Snapdragon 678 chipset for a 5G-capable Snapdragon 480, and increased the price from $299 to $399. It also shipped with Android 11 out of the box, instead of Android 10, and a rear fingerprint sensor instead of the original side-mounted design. The render video appears to show another side fingerprint sensor, indicating Motorola might be going back to the previous design.

According to Nils Ahrensmeier, another notable leaker, Motorola is also preparing an ‘Edge 30 Ultra’ with a ‘Moto Stylus Pen’ and a stylus case. It’s unclear if that phone will have the same budget passive stylus technology as the Moto G Stylus line, or if Motorola will opt for an active pen, like Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.
